Peter Capaldi And Mark Gatiss Have Interesting Ideas for Future Doctor Who Encounters

17 November 2014 1:46 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

In a special charity event run to raise money for the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard (Llgs), Mark Gatiss (of Doctor Who, Sherlock and League of Gentlemen) invited a few of his friends along for a pretty informal but entirely hilarious Q&A.

On the panel were Sue Perkins, Andrew Scott, Amanda Abbington, Miranda Richardson (who Gatiss often called ‘Randy’), Derren Brown and Peter Capaldi (who appeared after Brown prepared the audience for a transforming trick and walked off stage).

Taking the afternoon off from flying the Tardis, Capaldi was only too happy to speculate about future adventures for the Timelord, saying that he’d love to have the Doctor meet Martin Luther King Jr. At this revelation, Gatiss jokingly started taking down notes.

When asked later in the Q&A about what was on his bucket list, Capaldi answered: ‘Not to regenerate for a while.’ He also told an »

Originally planned to screen as a 30-minute preview at AFI Fest, Ava DuVernay’s Selma, centered on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, premiered in its entirety and stirred up more Oscar buzz ahead of its Christmas Day release.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Farber says the film is “intelligently written, vividly shot, tightly edited and sharply acted,” and that it “represents a rare example of craftsmanship working to produce a deeply moving piece of history.” Meanwhile, Paul Webb’s screenplay and David Oyelowo’s portrayal of Dr. King have been praised. The Wrap’s James Rocchi says, “Oyelowo’s performance would be impressive enough if it merely recreated the icon we now revere as perfectly as he does through a variety of methods… But Oyelowo, and Webb’s screenplay, also give us a rich, rewarding portrait of King as a man, »

Well, that was unexpected. Today, Lucasfilm announced that it will be bringing us an animated film titled Strange Magic in just three short months. Touchstone Pictures will be releasing the project, inspired by William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” into theaters on January 23rd, 2015.

Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Alfred Molina, Peter Stormare and Elijah Kelley all lend their voices to the film, playing magical creatures such as goblins, elves, fairies and imps who come to blows over a magic potion. Musical interludes help to tell the story, with Strange Magic incorporating “popular songs from the past six decades.”

Watch: All The World’s A Stage For Benedict Cumberbatch In New BBC TV Ad

29 October 2014 7:05 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As Americans continuously extoll the virtues of HBO, it’d be easy to come to the misunderstanding that the famed cable network invented the prestige drama and miniseries. But as a new commercial-cum-tribute makes clear, the BBC has had a long and storied tradition of long-form dramatic storytelling. Benedict Cumberbatch may be lining up franchise role after franchise role but the “Sherlock” actor still found time to star in a new spot for the network that has been home to some of his great performances —his superb turn as Stephen Hawking in the 2004 biopic “Hawking” familiarized Cumberbatch’s very posh-sounding name a full six years before his more buzzy showing on the popular Steven Moffat-run show. Anchored by Cumberbatch’s game recitation of the iconic “All the World’s a Stage” monologue from William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” the two-minute-long spot cuts together clips from a decades-spanning swath of programs like. »

Criterion Collection: My Darling Clementine | Blu-ray Review

14 October 2014 9:35 AM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

John Ford’s My Darling Clementine is a prime example of the Great American Western, embodying all that is good and right and just about this once dominant cinematic genre. Now available in a beautiful new hi-def burn by Criterion, this 70 year old horse opera gleams with new life and luster, preserving in minute detail the sweep and grandeur of Ford’s bedrock moralist visions. My Darling Clementine stands as a testament to Ford’s unique ability to balance the mundane with the monumental in perfectly proportioned tension; his laconic cowpokes equally imperiled by a parched, unforgiving wilderness and the dark designs of its human intruders.

While most scripts strive for reduction, My Darling Clementine is a case study in art of narrative inflation. The film takes a relatively minor incident in American history – a violent misunderstanding between two shady factions popularly known as The Shoot Out at Ok Corral »

Doctor Who complete reviews: The Caretaker

11 October 2014 5:58 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Viewers of a certain age may remember a quirky kids TV show called Grandad in which Clive Dunn played Charlie Quick, an absent-minded old caretaker who would almost certainly end each episode by drowning his spluttering boss in a tidal wave of fizzy drinks spurting from a malfunctioning dispenser unit.

Good times. And refreshingly free of the moronic TV programming that viewers have to endure these days. This ratings-driven disease has conveniently eaten its way into good old Doctor Who, which has been pushed back to 8.30 in order to make way for two tacky hours worth of Z-list celebs moving around a big floor. Considering that Doctor Who is supposed to be a family programme, pushing it back to make way for the lowest-common-denominator trash of Strictly Come Dancing makes about as much sense as a man trying to give directions with 100 gobstoppers in his mouth. That's the whole junior audience left out for starters. »

What Fools These Mortals Be: The Story of Puck, America’s First and Most Influential Magazine of Color Political Cartoons • 328 pages, Idw Publishing, $59.99 (Amazon, $40.64)

Once upon a time, mere mortal cartoonists held rockstar sway over American electoral politics via a wildly popular periodical that, early in its more than 40 year run. actually got their guy into the White House.

Let us now return to those halcyon days when men were men and cartoonists were gods.

These are your great-great grandfather’s political cartoons: dense, colorful and full of coded graphic allusions, mini-masterpieces as indecipherable to most modern day minds as The Daily Show’s Photoshopped on-screen graphics – arguably Puck’s progeny — would have been to our ancestors. But fret not, because all you really need to know to take a deep dive into this inky pool of polychromous political effulgence is that the message is always basically the same, most »

In recent years, director Joe Dante has really managed to produce films of the same quality as his greats like Gremlins, The 'Burbs, The Howling and more. He's been busy with episodes of TV shows like the new "Hawaii Five-0" and "Witches of East End" lately, not to mention directing Burying the Ex for this year, but now he's poised to get back into genre films again. THR has word that Dante is bringing a project called Ombra Amore to the New Cinema Network co-production market at The Rome Film Festival as part of a special section called "Great Beauties" that promote Italy as a production partner. So what's the film about? Well, it takes a cue from William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedy Romeo & Juliet, but brings werewolves and vampires into the equation.
