3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Ready for some groovy news? Starz has ordered a follow-up series to the cult “Evil Dead” film franchise, titled “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” The new show will reteam director Sam Raimi with longtime producing partner Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell, who will reprise his iconic role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead.

When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons — personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip. The series is slated for 10 half-hour episodes set to debut in 2015.

“Starz first worked with Sam and Rob on ‘Spartacus,’ and we are thrilled to be back in business with them,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “With »

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Interstellar” didn’t fly as far domestically as early estimates suggested.

Christopher Nolan’s space epic fell short of distributor Paramount Pictures’ $50 million projections, pulling in $47.5 million instead. Going into the week, Paramount expected the film to do between $50 million to $55 million in its opening weekend.

Interstellar” debuted in a few hundred Imax theaters and theaters with film projection on Tuesday before expanding to 3,561 last weekend. Its total for its first six days in theaters also had to be revised downward. It stands at $49.7 million, not $52.1 million as originally reported.

Domestically, “Big Hero 6″ was the weekend’s highest grossing film with $56 million.

Overseas, “Interstellar” was the weekend’s number one film, pulling in $83 million. When final numbers were tallied, the picture brightened for the film, which was originally expected to generate $80 million internationally. Showtime Renews ‘The Affair’ and ‘Homeland’

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Showtime has ordered a second season of “The Affair” and a fifth season of “Homeland.”

The moves were expected but nonetheless a vote of confidence in the pay cabler’s buzzy freshman drama, and a sign that “Homeland” is back on strong footing after some struggles in its third season.

“Affair” (pictured) has a 10-episode order for 2015. “Homeland,” from 20th Century Fox TV’s Fox 21 unit, is picked up for 12 episodes.

“In its fourth season, ‘Homeland’ has brilliantly reinvented itself. It continues to capture the attention of a devoted fan base, and has provided an enviable platform for the successful launch of ‘The Affair,’ ” said Showtime Networks prexy David Nevins. “With thought-provoking, relevant and addictive storylines, both series have been embraced, dissected and much debated week after week. We’re excited to see more from these complex shows in 2015.”

“Affair” bowed last month to critical raves. Series led by Dominic West, »

'Community' adds Paget Brewster & Keith David to season 6 cast

6 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

With production on "Community" season 6 beginning next week, the comedy is adding two actors to the cast: Paget Brewster and Keith David. The series was already without original regulars Donald Glover and Chevy Chase by the end of last season, and Yvette Nicole Brown had to leave to care for her ill father. Plus, Jonathan Banks and John Oliver, who were significant parts of season 5, are busy with other jobs ("Better Call Saul" and "Last Week Tonight," respectively) and aren't likely to be back. Even with the return of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong, the world of Greendale was getting awfully under-populated. Now the show's added two comedy veterans — one of whom has already been on the show in another role. Brewster (who, before her stint on "Criminal Minds," was a regular on a whole bunch of sitcoms, albeit most of them »

David Bowie's new song: 'Tis A Pity She Was a Whore' is a bold, chaotic jangle

28 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Ready to hear what your descent into madness will sound like? David Bowie is here with a brand new song. Described as a "demo track" on the music icon's official Facebook page, "'Tis A Pity She Was a Whore" is a song that might result “If Vorticists wrote Rock Music" (Bowie's words). Vorticism, of course (!), was a modernist art movement in early 20th century Britain that rejected the stodgy Victorian-style artwork of the period in favor of geometric shapes and bold colors. The movement was cut short by the First World War, a fact also referenced in Bowie's Facebook post along with an explication of the song's title: "The song acknowledges the shocking rawness of the First World War and the title is a play on ‘Tis Pity She's A Whore’ a John Ford Restoration play first performed in 1629 at the Cockpit Theatre in London." Now that I know more about Vorticism, »
