Interstellar

SEOUL – Sci-fi “Interstellar” which clocked up an extraordinary opening frame in Korea, maintained its dominant hold on the top spot at the weekend’s box office.

Its market share, 73% last weekend, went up to 76% during the weekend period from Friday to Sunday. “Interstellar” scored $13.2 million (KRW 14.5 billion), bringing its cumulative score to $35.3 million (KRW 38.8 billion).

“Cart” a Korean social drama about unfairly dismissed market workers climbed 26 places to second place. Hailed as the first commercially-produced film with a strong social message in Korea, the film boasts a strong cast of veteran actresses as well as a hugely popular K-pop idol, Do Kyung-soo (a.k.a. D.O from the boy band, EXO).  “Cart” scored $2.01 million (KRW2.20 billion) taking its cume to $2.86 million.

Local high school comedy, “Fashion King” dropped one place to number three. “Gone Girl” also slipped a place. The Cameraon Diaz starrer, “The Other Woman” debuted at fifth place, clocking up $248,000.
