Box Office: ‘Nightcrawler,’ ‘Ouija’ Tied for First in Deadly Halloween Weekend

14 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Ouija” and “Nightcrawler” are effectively tied for first place at the box office, providing a little excitement in an otherwise deadly Halloween weekend at the multiplexes.

Both films picked up roughly $10.9 million, but a clear leader will only be determined once final numbers come in on Monday. Whether the victor is “Ouija” or “Nightcrawler,” it will still be the lowest-grossing No. 1-ranked film since the first weekend in September when “Guardians of the Galaxy” topped the box office with $10.4 million.

Nightcrawler,” a twisty thriller about an ethically warped crime reporter (Jake Gyllenhaal), debuted across 2,766 locations. Open Road, which picked up “Nightcrawler” at Cannes, saw there was a dearth of new Halloween fare and pushed the film back from its original release dats of Oct. 17, when it would have faced stiffer competition from Brad Pitt’s “Fury.” The film cost $8.5 million to produce and has been a critical favorite, with a »

Watch Prince's Incredible Eight-Minute 'SNL' Medley

16 hours ago | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

The last time Prince had eight uninterrupted minutes on national television, he was performing at the Super Bowl Xli halftime show in 2007. While that gig featured greatest hits like "1999," "Purple Rain" and Let's Go Crazy," Prince's Saturday Night Live set featured tracks that were likely unknown to most viewers. It didn't matter: Prince, his backing band 3rdEyeGirl and guest vocalist Lianne La Havas still delivered one of the most explosive and most polished SNL musical spots anyone has witnessed since perhaps when Chris Rock, the guest host, was still an SNL featured player. »

Halloween is over. Isn't it sad? It's the best of all holidays - better than Christmas even! There, I said it. Wednesday Addams pities me and I don't care. But don't fret. As Ellen wisely points out, people can scare each other at any time of the year! And she's proven it, too, with this montage of her greatest pranks of all time on both A-list celebrities and Bethenny Frankel. Yes, she even made Taylor Swift fall down. Gripping stuff. Film Review: ‘Jessabelle’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Not to be confused with “Annabelle” (although that could only help commercially), “Jessabelle” serves up a murky and underwhelming cauldron of Southern-fried voodoo-horror claptrap. Scaling down a notch into PG-13 territory after two back-to-back “Saw” sequels, director Kevin Greutert manages some nicely drawn-out tension in isolated sequences, but novel twists and effective scares prove few and far between in this ludicrous bayou gothic about a wheelchair-bound young woman excavating a series of unusually dark family secrets. Although Lionsgate’s campaign is touting the involvement of producer Jason Blum (of the “Paranormal Activity,” “Sinister,” “Insidious” and “The Purge” movies), audience prospects look just middling, and franchising opportunities hopefully moot, for this post-Halloween theatrical and VOD release.

It takes barely five minutes for red-headed twentysomething Jessabelle, aka Jessie (Australian actress Sarah Snook), to lose her b.f. (Brian Hallisay) and their unborn child in a horrific car accident. Two months later, significantly »

‘Jessabelle’ Review: Southern Gothic Tale Best When It Forgets It's a Horror Movie

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

It's the misfortune of “Jessabelle” to arrive just a few months after HBO's “True Detective,” which commanded all the gravitas and exoticism the Southern Gothic genre has to offer. The gruesome crime that serves as the impetus for the Louisiana-set “Jessabelle” is lurid and thematically rich enough to take place in the same universe as the cable series, but the film fritters away an auspicious premise on a derivative, callous, and unconvincing horror framing. The result feels like finding a choice cut of filet mignon seasoned with Cheeto dust. See photos: 10 of Hollywood's Creepiest Demon Dolls (Photos) At least director Kevin. »

Review: 'The Affair' - 'Episode 4'

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Thoughts on tonight's "The Affair" — and the early part of the season so far — coming up just as soon as I'm not much of a cuddler... As I said in my initial review of the series, infidelity isn't a topic that I have ever found that dramatically compelling in and of itself, and even with this cast and with Sarah Treem running the series, my expectations weren't high. But the specificity of the two families, and the way the dueling Pov structure made me question the truth of everything I was seeing, kept me engaged in the first episode, and also curious to see whether Treem and company could keep this going past the pilot. What kept me engaged for the most part in episodes 2 and 3 was watching the ways the four different stories — Noah's Pov, Alison's Pov, and the versions each of them tell the cop — intersect and conflict with one another. »

TV Review: ‘Skyscraper Live With Nik Wallenda’

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

As with Nik Wallenda’s Grand Canyon walk, “Skyscraper Live With Nik Wallenda” represented an unabashed cocktail of hype, breathless hyperbole and showmanship, coupled with a somewhat more muted endorsement of born-again Christianity all the way across. After 95 minutes of foreplay, Wallenda further established himself as this generation’s Evel Knievel, and Discovery Channel had what no doubt will be another boffo rating to sell, without having to exercise the 10-second delay that meant something had gone dreadfully wrong. From that perspective, the corporate players survived their own high-wire act, though not all the participants escaped unscathed.

Indeed, the casualties here were Willie Geist and Natalie Morales, who in hosting the event merely seemed to prove that they will say any inane thing put in front of them on a teleprompter — over and over again. Granted, theirs was a thankless task, asked to fill the first 95 minutes before Wallenda finally mounted the wire, »

And The Latest New Show to Be Canceled Is...

2 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Can 15 strangers create a perfect new society? Apparently, the answer is no. After just two months, Fox has pulled the plug on its high-concept reality experiment that was supposed to spend a year following a group of real people trying to combine their ideals and create their perfect world. The cancellation is not a surprise, given that the series already lost its Tuesday timeslot and was only airing on Friday nights after ratings dropped to around 1.5 million, after premiering to around 4 million. Reviews were also pretty abysmal, and the show continues to claim the "most hated" spot in our ranking of the new fall shows. Only 20% of voters claimed to love the show.   A statement on the »
