Verdell Mathis
Biography
Mathis' first engagement in Negro League baseball was with the Memphis Red Sox in 1940. He continued to pitched with them for the next 10 years, playing occasionally with other clubs, including Tampico of the Mexican League. He was known as one of the best left handers in baseball, appearing in the East-West Game in 1941, 1942, 1944, and 1945.
Mathis died on October 30th, 1998 in Memphis, TN. In 2006, he was nominated for the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Special Negro Leagues committee.
