The Buzz: Jake Gyllenhaal is getting the lion's share of attention here thanks to the physical transformation he underwent to play one of his most intense characters to date, and he's certainly been on a roll since Source Code (I recently watched Enemy and thought it was excellent, too). But Rene Russo will not be overlooked thanks to her performance as the TV-news producer who fuels Gyllenhaal's character's obsessive nature. Perhaps the most applause should be aimed Dan Gilroy's way for making the rare successful transition from screenwriter to director, and for creating a hard-boiled tale that harkens back to 1970s crime-dramas.

The Buzz: We think Rowan Joffe has a hit movie in him somewhere; this is the second directorial outing for the screenwriter, but the generic-sounding narrative seems to be a waste of an excellent cast and the chance to author S.J. Watson's bestseller. You could just wipe out your own memory and go see Gone Girl again instead.

The Buzz: Upon seeing Saw the first time, I didn't think it would ever merit 6 sequels and the inevitable reboot/resuscitation we all know is coming soon. I also didn't think I'd miss Jigsaw's clever traps and morality games, but the current haunted-house craze has me pining for someone who is both mentoring and truly sinister. I'm so Amanda.

Adieu au langage (2014) - [Limited]
The idea is simple: A married woman and a single man meet. They love, they argue, fists fly. A dog strays between town and country. The seasons pass. The man and woman meet again. The dog finds itself between them. The other is in one, the one is in the other and they are three. The former husband shatters everything. A second film begins: the same as the first, and yet not. From the human race we pass to metaphor. This ends in barking and a baby's cries.

The Buzz: The best thing we've heard film-wise in years is that Jean-Luc Godard watched Piranha 3D before he began production on his own 3D work.

The Buzz: Daniel Radcliffe will have to endure another 5+ years of articles talking about how he's "all grown up now" even though his (highly unexpected) appearance in an Alexandre Aja film is his fifth post-Potter role (counting the excellent TV series A Young Doctor's Notebook). Radcliffe has been good-to-great in each of these films and apparently he masters this film's hard-to-balance tone, and Aja has earned a second look from genre reviews who feel he peaked with High Tension. Cinematography geeks should rejoice knowing that Frederick Elmes of Blue Velvet fame shot this picture.

A documentary on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion as seen through the eyes of oil executives, survivors and Gulf Coast residents who experienced it first-hand and then were left to pick up the pieces while the world moved on.

The Buzz: Margaret Brown has made a couple cultural documentaries and now she's gaining serious attention by her commitment to looking at the long tail of this environmental disaster instead of making a more inflammatory, finger-pointing statement.

The Buzz: It's fitting to see a documentary on the protected world of television showrunners, a profession that has received more public attention since the world of cable-TV programming turned the industry on its head. Said differently: we probably knew nearly as much about "The Walking Dead's" myriad creative shake-ups as its cast did. The question mark here is how much this doc will appeal anyone but the most obsessive entertainment junkies.

The Buzz: So often we see a documentary help artists attain posthumous success; it's truly heartwarming to know that Al Carbee lived to enjoy his first-ever art opening and some of the successes that followed. Director Jeremy Workman, who fused with Carbee over the decade-long filmmaking process, set-up over a dozen cameras in Carbee's home to capture its myriad wonders (think: Wes Anderson dreamland meets Narnia), which makes total sense when you learn that Workman is a heralded editor of indie-movie trailers.

The Buzz: This curiosity aims to cover a lot of thematic territory in under two hours, which would make the most seasoned filmmaker question how to approach such a feat. Telling the one family's history of life as members of the Sicilian Mafia warrants its own epic, but then you try and fold dramatic re-enactments and animated sequences into the same film? Bold. Wise? We're unsure.
