The Buzz: Supernatural horror movies will pattern themselves after Insidious and The Conjuring until audiences grow weary of the formula, so that's why Ouija's trailer focuses more on the spirit world than it does on the spirit board. It's also why the movie seems to have no sense of humor about itself, which makes us long for a new Ti West film ... Stiles White and Juliet Snowden co-wrote The Possession and they re-team here with White directing as well, so the duo knows this genre, and with no direct competition through Halloween, these particular spirits should linger for a couple weeks.

The Buzz: Keanu Reeves has resurfaced with an action film that's been pre-approved by genre fans, Reddit AMAs that have made us kinda fall in love with him, and rumblings that he'll become Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If a hit-man could ever sell a Marley & Me moment while staying ahead of relentless action sequences, it's Keanu, eh?

Certificate R   -   Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 51/100 (5 reviews)
In 1988, a teenage girl's life is thrown into chaos when her mother disappears.

The Buzz: I feel like Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children could include a scene where young Shailene Woodley fans are exposed to their first Gregg Araki film. If you haven't heard yet: Shai spends most of the time here nude, having sex, and swearing more than the rest of the cast combined. And while Eva Green's screen time is at a minimum, she approaches her character with Artemisia ferocity. It's a good move for their respective careers, and for us, even a lesser Araki film is something to relish.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Romance

Metascore: 64/100 (7 reviews)
In the throes of a quarter-life crisis, Megan panics when her boyfriend proposes, then, taking an opportunity to escape for a week, hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year-old Annika, who lives with her world-weary single dad.

The Buzz: This is the first time Lynn Shelton has directed from someone else's screenplay and -- without having seen it yet -- we're wondering if that's the primary reason why even the most positive reviews all mention there are only glimpses of the magic Shelton typically creates with her cast. If we wind up feeling similarly, we will look to the fact that her career is ever-diversifying with forays into television directing and studios looking to hire her, and we want to see her influence at this level.

  -   Documentary

Metascore: 89/100 (6 reviews)
A documentarian and a reporter travel to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with Edward Snowden.

The Buzz: Earlier this year we saw the documentary on Hacktivist Aaron Swartz (rest in peace, young man) and now we get to observe Edward Snowden in an intimate Hong Kong setting soon after his life-changing act of disseminating information. The documentary has already earned more press than your standard feature-film release, with most reviewers admiring the fact that it's edited like a thriller, right down to the physic toll paid by its subject.

Certificate R   -   Drama

Metascore: 86/100 (5 reviews)
A family on a ski holiday in the French Alps find themselves staring down an avalanche during lunch one day; in the aftermath, their dynamic has been shaken to its core, with a question mark hanging over their patriarch in particular.

The Buzz: Ruben Ostlund's drama (or dark comedy, depending on how you view it) exited Cannes with major buzz, a Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard category, and am ambiguous ending that seduced some critics and irked others.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Family | Sport

When a high school football star is suddenly stricken with irreversible total blindness, he must decide whether to live a safe handicapped life or bravely return to the life he once knew and the sport he still loves.

The Buzz: One part inspirational sports drama, one part faith-based message movie, two indie studios are partnering to get 23 Blast out to 600 theaters -- quite an achievement and fully representative of the film's chance for some crossover success.

Certificate R   -   Action | Crime | Drama
