Certificate R   -   Action | Drama | War

Metascore: 63/100 (43 reviews)
April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Out-numbered, out-gunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

The Buzz: It could be said that David Ayer, best known for his stories set on the streets of Los Angeles, has been making war movies his entire career; Fury finds the filmmaker looking back in history for the first time, and this is definitely his first 'event picture' as a director. Reports of Ayer's manly approach to his work -- he likes to have sparring sessions before cameras roll each day -- has us thinking how ecstatic Shia LaBeouf must have been in such an environment. For the most part (i.e. barring Sabotage), Ayer has found the balance between commercial and critical success, but we're not certain this film's engineering is as sound as it once seemed - the first reviews express disappointment in these characters and their climatic showdown.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Romance

Metascore: 27/100 (24 reviews)
A pair of former high school sweethearts reunite after many years when they return to visit their small hometown.

The Buzz: Nicholas Sparks's novels become some of Hollywood's most bankable movies, and the writer is a free agent when it comes to partnering with studios. Here, it's no surprise that Relativity Media has reunited with Sparks for a second outing; Safe Haven did quite well for the studio, which often comes up short as a distributor. Business-talk aside, Best of Me seems grounded with a real-world premise and potential Notebook-like chemistry between leads Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden - two key elements in what might become one of Sparks's top box-office outings.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Fantasy | Romance

Metascore: 66/100 (25 reviews)
Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

The Buzz: Curious that there are no explicit references to Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead in Fox's promotional campaign for one of their loveliest looking animated projects - it seems both disrespectful to audiences and a really curious business decision.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 86/100 (32 reviews)
A washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory.

The Buzz: In Birdman, Michael Keaton plays a washed-up actor best known for playing a superhero named "Birdman." That's an intriguing art-imitates-life set-up, as most moviegoers associate Keaton first-and-foremost with his portrayal of Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns.

Birdman is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, whose movies tend to be pretty dire: Biutiful, Babel and 21 Grams are remembered as much for the quality filmmaking as they are for being really, really depressing. While Birdman appears to dabble in existential angst, it's being positioned more as an off-beat comedy, albeit one that's artfully crafted (its apparently been pieced together to seem as if most of the movie is one continuous shot).

Reviews coming out of the early Fall film festivals have heaped lavish praise upon Birdman, with many suggesting that it's an instant classic. It's also being pegged as a major Oscar contender, so if you're the type that needs to see all the Best Picture nominees, make sure to check this out early.

The lives of four black students at an Ivy League college converge after controversy breaks out due to the ill-conceived theme of the campus humor magazine's annual Halloween party.

The Buzz: I am well-acquainted with writer/director Justin Simien from his film-publicist days, and I love that he's generated discussion about race and identity on a national level and handled the media like a seasoned filmmaker. I'm heading into this film imagining that I'll be enlightened to a certain degree and frustrated in new ways, and I'm really enthused to see Simien gets into for his next project.

Anger rages in Philip as he awaits the publication of his second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley, and his own indifference to promoting the novel. When Philip's idol Ike Zimmerman offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject: himself.

The Buzz: Just when I think I've had enough of the self-centered writer as a protagonist, someone casts Jason Schwartzman as a novelist making questionable life decisions as his sophomore title is about to be released, and critics say the cinematography is a Cassavetes tribute while Elisabeth Moss threatens to walk away with the narrative in her hands. And I'm rooted to my theater seat again. Also, director Alex Ross Perry caught my interest with his previous film, The Color Wheel.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called 'moonlight murders' begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Both a serial killer and a historic movie studio return with this horror revamp; while the citizens of Texarkana fear for their lives, Orion Pictures has quietly resurfaced after shuttering its doors back in 1999 and will serve as the speciality-film studio for MGM. Note that director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon helmed episodes from the first three seasons of "American Horror Story."

A grieving father in a downward spiral stumbles across a box of his recently deceased son's demo tapes and lyrics. Shocked by the discovery of this unknown talent, he forms a band in the hope of finding some catharsis.

The Buzz: The encouraging aspects of William H. Macy's directorial debut are: this isn't an Issue film though it deals with a young man who was killed in a school-campus shooting, and the story also is not about pursuit of success or fame; instead, it's about a crushed father looking to move on in life. Macy enlisted a couple of his "Shamless" friends to handle the music, and indie king Ben Kweller is in the band that is willed into existence by Anton Yelchin's character and fronted by Bill Crudup's.

The Buzz: Though audiences have been divided over the film itself -- unsurprising when you consider its politics -- Kristen Stewart has emerged with reviews that will help further push her career away from her Twilight/tabloid fodder/meme generator era.

The Buzz: Any new film from Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata is cause for celebration, and his latest is earning raves for its serious-yet-dreamy narrative and his painterly animation style.

  -   Documentary | Biography | History | News

Metascore: 84/100 (11 reviews)
Four modern stories of remarkable courage while setting out to uncover the forgotten life of Raphael Lemkin, the man who coined the term 'genocide'. Inspired by Samantha Power's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, 'A Problem From Hell', 'Watchers of the Sky' traverses time and continents to explore genocide and the cycle of violence.
Director:

The Buzz: The only criticism aimed at this documentary seems fair: weaving together four contemporary tales with the work of Raphael Lemkin dilutes the impact of the individual stories, which could be better served by their own separate films.

Metascore: 33/100 (4 reviews)
A news crew is taken hostage on an airplane set to take off from the Seychelles by a gang of Somali pirates whose leader is driven by one goal: to be interviewed by a prominent member of the crew, legendary journalist Frank Saltzman.
Director:

The Buzz: Director Simon Brand refocuses the threat of a Somali-pirate hijacking on a plane that's set for takeover, though the action remains grounded and centered on actions of David Oyelowo's character - reason enough to consider watching this thriller. At some point Brand should find himself directing a major studio project as well; he's signed up for Captive with Bruce Willis for a while now, so we have our eyes on that project's development.
