Box Office: ‘Ouija’ Tops Charts, ‘John Wick’ Surprises

14 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Low-budget chiller “Ouija” scared up the most ticket sales this weekend, but the strength of Keanu Reeves’ “John Wick” was the biggest box office surprise.

Ouija” benefited from audiences looking to get into the Halloween spirit by topping charts with $20 million from 2,858 locations. The brain child of Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and “Paranormal Activity” maestro Jason Blum, “Ouija” cost less than $5 million to produce, setting Universal Pictures, the studio behind the seance horror film, up for some enviable profit margins.

It marks the seventh of Blum’s micro-budgeted horror films to open in first place.

“He just does it over and over and over again,” said Nikki Rocco, Universal’s distribution chief.

Ouija’s” PG-13 rating helped the film broaden its appeal to younger, female audiences. The picture’s opening weekend crowd was 75% under the age of 25 and 61% female.

“Marketing knew exactly what audience they were going after and they nailed it, »

'SNL' took aim at Matthew McConaughey's Lincoln car commercials

23 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Matthew McConaughey may be at his most McConaughish while he's behind the wheel of his Lincoln car. That, at least, is the impression he leaves on those recent spate of Lincoln car commercials. You know, the really very lackadaisical ones directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. "Saturday Night Live" made a run of parody ads on tonight's episode (Oct. 25), putting host Jim Carrey behind the wheel as Mr. Alright Alright Alright. And you know what? He pulls it off. Carrey may be spinning his wheels with the snot humor at times, but at the same time we're genuinely curious about who the hell those kids belong to. We're just bugs on a rock in a void. Tonight's episode of "SNL" featured Carrey and musical guest Iggy Azalea. Read a full recap here. »

Since their wedding three years ago, the couple have gone the diplomatic route of alternating the yuletide holiday between their two families. On their first Christmas, in 2011, it was the traditional royal family gathering at Sandringham House, in Norfolk, the Queen's sprawling country estate located some 110 miles north of London. The following year, it was off to the Middleton family mansion in Kate's hometown village of Bucklebury. Then last Christmas - their first with baby Prince George »

TV Review: ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Finale Good To the Last Drop (Spoilers)

25 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Terence Winter has professed his love for “The Sopranos” finale, but the “Boardwalk Empire” creator certainly didn’t choose to emulate his former show’s cryptic conclusion in crafting a fifth season that steadfastly built toward its final, revelatory sequences. And that’s to his and the program’s credit, as the HBO drama methodically detailed the history of its central character, Nucky Thompson, while tying up loose ends (or most of them, anyway) with a ruthless efficiency that would have made Michael Corleone proud.

Sunday’s closing hour (and Spoiler Alert if you haven’t watched) saw Nucky become the embodiment of fellow mobster Johnny Torrio’s rueful admonition that there’s little point to being the richest man in the graveyard. In that, he joined a rather lengthy roster of key players who had bitten the dust in this fast-moving final flight of episodes, to the point where »

Showrunner Terence Winter on Why He Chose to End Boardwalk Empire That Way

26 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the series finale of Boardwalk Empire. No Sopranos-style ambiguity here: Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) didn't survive Boardwalk Empire's series finale. The disgraced Atlantic City mob boss was gunned down by Tommy Darmody, son of Jimmy (Michael Pitt), whom Nucky had shot dead, and grandson of Jillian (Gretchen Mol), whom Nucky betrayed decades earlier—as depicted in flashbacks throughout the fifth and final season. Creator Terence Winter breaks down the decision to whack Nucky. How long ago did you know how you wanted the show to end?We knew definitively somewhere in the middle of Season 4 that Nucky would die. We ran the different versions of how it might end. We had talked about him going off to a life of obscurity after he gave everything up. In some ways, that felt like a punishment, too—not that we were necessarily trying to punish him. But »

Series finale review: 'Boardwalk Empire' - 'Eldorado'

26 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Boardwalk Empire" came to an end tonight. I spoke at length with creator Terence Winter, and I have a review of the finale coming up just as soon as I think about the things I want in life, then imagine myself in a dress... "What are you in the end, anyway?" "I'm what I need to be." "How's that make you anything at all? -The Commodore & Nucky And so "Boardwalk Empire" died as it lived: with a tightly-plotted installment that paid off many storylines from both the final season and the entire series, and one where the most memorable, powerful scene involved someone other than Nucky Thompson. Although the Nucky material was pretty damn powerful and satisfying in its own right. The most powerful scene in question: Al Capone telling his son about his impending prison sentence, and the boy not only offering to help his dad, but putting up »

'Boardwalk Empire' creator Terence Winter on the series finale

26 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Boardwalk Empire" has come to an end. As I've done after each previous season — and as I also did at the start of this final one, just because of the big time jump and the decision to end the show — I spoke with the show's creator Terence Winter about everything that went down, and how he arrived at the various fates for Nucky, Margaret, Chalky, and his other creations, in addition to how he intertwined them with the real-life stories of Lucky Luciano, Al Capone and company. My finale review is here, and the Winter interview is coming up just as soon as I ask you an important question about Marlene Dietrich... How does it feel to be only a few days away from the finale airing? Terence Winter: Really bittersweet. It's funny; there's still "Boardwalk Empire"-related business that I have to do. Doing interviews, obviously, but little things for post, »

Marcia Strassman made her mark as the 1970s version of Alice Kramden, playing the (mostly) understanding wife of Gabe Kaplan on ABC’s “Welcome Back, Kotter.”

But Strassman, who died Friday at 66, was in showbiz for more than 10 years before she wound up on the sitcom that became a pop culture touchstone, in part because it made a star of John Travolta.

Lithe and raspy-voiced, Strassman began her showbiz career on stage and pursued a career as a pop singer in the mid-1960s before her thesping work took off. After she got her break on “Kotter,” she became active in the Screen Actors Guild.

Here are 12 things you didn’t know about Strassman’s early career:
