Box Office: ‘Gone Girl,’ ‘Annabelle’ Stun With Big Debuts

13 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Gone Girl” and “Annabelle” enjoyed sizzling debut weekends, as David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-seller racked up $38 million and “The Conjuring” spin-off scared up $37.2 million.

It was a neck-and-neck race for first place and it’s possible that when the final numbers are tallied, the two pictures could end up swapping places. Regardless of who wears the crown, the films’ debuts continue a fall box office turnaround following a devastating summer for the movie business. The overall box office was up nearly 20% from the same weekend a year ago when “Gravity” lifted off to $55.8 million.

“We were due for some breakout performances,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com “The market has the ability to expand if there are two quality films in it, even if both are R-rated thrillers.”

Produced by 20th Century Fox and New Regency for $61 million, “Gone Girl” unspooled across 3,013 locations. »

Sarah Silverman has Joan Rivers roast heaven on 'Saturday Night Live'

19 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Many mourned the passing of Joan Rivers last month, but none moreso than Sarah Silverman. The recent Emmy-winner had often referred to Rivers as a personal "hero" and one of her idols. Hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, Silverman became Rivers for a sketch that found the iconic comedienne roasting some of the biggest stars in heaven including Richard Pryor (not Jay Pharaoh best impression), Steve Jobs, Ava Gardner, Ben Franklin (a great Bobby Moynihan), Freddie Mercury (um, Adam Levine) and Lucille Ball (Kate McKinnon). This must have meant a lot to Silverman and it was clearly tough for her to get through it. Unlike any other sketch during the 90 minute show, Silverman uncharacteristically flubbed her lines a number of times (and it wasn't something Joan would have done). Overall, a nice moment that's worth watching for the end card alone. »

Film Review: ‘Inherent Vice’

4 October 2014 6:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The good-vibing ’60s are slip-sliding away in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice,” and along with them a certain idea of pre-Vietnam, pre-Manson California life — of boho beach towns and uncommodified counterculture soon to be washed away by a tsunami of gentrification, social conservatism and Reaganomics. Freely but faithfully adapted by Anderson from Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 detective novel — the first of the legendary author’s works to reach the screen — Anderson’s seventh feature film is a groovy, richly funny stoner romp that has less in common with “The Big Lebowski” than with the strain of fatalistic, ’70s-era California noirs (“Chinatown,” “The Long Goodbye,” “Night Moves”) in which the question of “whodunit?” inevitably leads to an existential vanishing point. Not for all tastes (including the Academy’s), this unapologetically weird, discursive and totally delightful whatsit will repel staid multiplex-goers faster than a beaded, barefoot hippie in a Beverly Hills boutique. »

Season premiere review: 'Bob's Burgers' - 'Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl'

just now | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A quick review of tonight's "Bob's Burgers" coming up just as soon as I sing about having a head for business and a bod for sin(*)... I don't really have anything insightful to say on the subject of "Word Hard or Die Trying, Girl." It represents so much of what Loren Bouchard and company do well, particularly in how it blends their love of both musical parody and the pop culture of the 1980s with the manic enthusiasm of Gene and Louise (or the more elliptical enthusiasm of Tina) to create something weird and wonderful and hilarious. Of course Gene's "Die Hard" musical is terrible. Of course his rival's "Working Girl" musical is even worse. Yet they and the show throw themselves into the concept — and into the outstanding improvised mash-up of the two plays at the end — like it's the greatest idea anyone has ever had, which is how it ultimately feels. »

‘Autómata’ Review: Antonio Banderas Recycles Robot Clichés, But the Effects Are Great

17 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Watching director Gabe Ibáñez's “Autómata,” it's hard not to note and appreciate the skill, will and invention brought to the effects sequences, a mix of practical magic and CGI trickery, nor to marvel at how Ibáñez's film gets a billion-dollar look out of a “mere” $15 million. As a demonstration reel or test clip, there's no doubt that “Automata”‘s finest moments would get Ibáñez some well-deserved work. But I come to bury “Autómata,” not to praise it; every innovation or nicely-finessed moment of work is outweighed by a lumbering, slumbering, overlong running time that's the bulky, rattling container for every. »

FX’s ‘The Strain’ Finale Goes For the Throat (Spoilers)

57 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In a summer of Isis terrorism and Ebola fears, “The Strain” could have hardly been better timed. Initially something of an oddity for FX – a vampires-among-us fantasy, on a network steeped in gritty realism – the adaptation of Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s creation piled on layers of mythology, bounding ahead with new characters and increasingly fantastic situations that, frankly, would have felt less palatable had the show not gradually built up to them. That concluded in Sunday’s action-laden finale, which neatly laid out countless possibilities looking forward to a second season.

That the show concluded its season a week before “The Walking Dead” returns represents an odd form of symmetry, since in many ways, “The Strain” plays like the natural companion to AMC’s runaway hit. If ever a case could be made for networks engineering baseball-like trades – “We’ll give you ‘Halt and Catch Fire,’ and »

The Strain Season 1 Finale Recap: Stop Trying to Make Fet Happen

1 hour ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

It would be fair to ask why Eph feels compelled to take Zack under his wing and into battle, as opposed to fleeing across the nearest bridge before somebody decides no one’s getting out of New York City — dead or alive. But someone has to play hero, especially when quivering cowards like Eph’s former boss Everett Barnes — who, ironically, backpedaled away from his opportunity to quarantine Manhattan — are falling in line with Eldritch and Eichhorst rather than get tossed over a towering ledge like Secretary Pierson (can you blame him?). It’s a tough day for Zack, who trades in his portable video games for a silver sword, stares down red-eyed strigoi (a cool touch, and very reminiscent of the early Michael Mann film The Keep, a 1983 horror tale that also marries monsters and Nazi mythology) and comes face to hideously transformed face with his undead mother. Watch: ‘Better Call Saul’ Music Video Shows New Footage

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Breaking Bad” fans finally have a better look at the hit’s spinoff, “Better Call Saul,” in the form of a music video that could be teasing some of the plotlines and reveals some new footage.

The music video aired Sunday night at the end of a two-month “Breaking Bad” marathon on AMC, and displays some shots of Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk, practicing his law craft and losing his temper. Previously, AMC had released two very short teasers, but this is the clearest look at the spinoff so far.

“Saul, Saul, you better call Saul / He’ll fight for your rights, when your back’s to the wall / He’ll stick it to the man, justice for all,” sings country musician Junior Brown in front of an Albuquerque-like backdrop.

The show will follow Odenkirk’s Goodman before his days as Walter White’s lawyer. Jonathan Banks is set to return as Mike, »

Season premiere review: 'Homeland' - 'The Drone Queen/Trylon and Perisphere'

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Homeland" is back for a fourth season, and while I don't plan to cover the show regularly anymore, I have some thoughts on the two-hour premiere, coming up just as soon as I wage a 1-year war 14 times... "You know what? Fuck you! No, really, Carrie. Fuck you! What the hell is wrong with you?" -Quinn Once upon a time, Showtime was going to air only a single "Homeland" episode tonight, paired with the debut of Dominic West and company in "The Affair." At a certain point — possibly because "The Affair" appears to be behind schedule (critics still haven't seen more than the first episode) — the plan changed to the double feature we got instead. But in terms of shaping the real-world narrative about the state of "Homeland" post-Brody, I think the show would have been much better off with the original scheduling. On its own, "The Drone Queen" does »

'Better Call Saul' has an earwormy new theme song and music video

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Better Call Saul"? You're gonna be humming that line all week long, my friends. A theme song and accompanying music video for the forthcoming "Breaking Bad" spinoff have been unveiled, and in it we're treated to the troublingly catchy chorus of "Saul, Saul, You Better Call Saul/He'll fight for your rights when your back's to the wall/Stick it to the Man/Justice for All/You Better call Saul." Seriously you guys, it won't leave my brain. Join me. Performed by country artist Junior Brown, the song and video evoke "Negro y Azul: The Ballad of Heisenberg," the Narcocorrido tune that opened episode seven of "Breaking Bad" Season 2 (thanks to Rolling Stone for the reminder). Though the rockabilly-esque "Better Call Saul" is sonically different, its lyrics similarly (maybe?) seem to contain references to the show's plot, with lines like, "Your husband disappeared in a most convenient way/Now your »

'Homeland' Boss Talks Season 4 Shockers, Post-Brody Reboot

1 hour ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Homeland returned to Showtime on Sunday night, and longtime viewers who tuned in likely did so with a great deal of uncertainty. When the drama last aired, half of its central duo was stung up in an Iranian public square — laying waste to the central dynamic in place since the 2011 premiere. The new Homeland, which aired two back-to-back episodes, spent little time ruminating on the deceased (at least during the first hour), instead shifting its focus to Carrie Mathison's (Claire Danes) new Islamabad appointment with the CIA. Things didn't get off to the smoothest of starts,

See a Musical Preview for Better Call Saul

In a teaser evocative of the Heisenberg drug ballad from Breaking Bad season two's "Negro y Azul," AMC has released a musical teaser for its upcoming Saul Goodman spinoff, Better Call Saul. Performed by country artist Junior Brown, the verses detail the exploits of some of Saul’s clients — from vandalism and arson to getting busted shoplifting a George Forman grill at Walmart — which are all plot points that we would greatly enjoy seeing Saul attempt to wrangle. Boardwalk Empire Recap: Things Fall Apart

1 hour ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Well, we have three episodes left in the Boardwalk Empire saga and, as “King of Norway” shows, things are beginning to unravel at a breakneck pace. This episode alone had many of the characters getting immersed in, if not pandemonium (as Van Alden noted a few episodes back), then full-on, life-shattering hysteria. As always, let’s start with Nucky. Even though he’s kept a calm, Zen-like levelheadedness this season, he’s beginning to get the fire back in his eyes after Torrio set him and Maranzano up to be tommy gunned-down by Luciano and Lansky’s boys. He walks away with minor cuts and bruises (thanks to the eagle-eyed alertness of his bodyguard Arquimedes/”Archie”/Cuban Richard Harrow), but it gets him turnt up enough to ring up Torrio and tell him that he, along with those “two pissants,” will be in their graves soon.
