BAGUIO CITY,May 22 (PIA) - - The Environment and Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources -  Cordillera (EMB-DENR-CAR) convened  recently concerned local government units, agencies and private partners  in preparation  for  the p designation of the Bued River as a Water Quality Management Area (WQMA).

The Bued River system spans the towns of Tuba and  Itogon in Benguet and the city and its water pours downstream  to Sison, Pangasinan.  It is classified as Class C  fit for irrigation, recreation and industrial purposes.

EMB-DENR-CAR Regional Director Oscar Cabanayan sought the help of concerned government agencies and local governments within the river system to  improve the river’s present water quality and level up or  bring back its original classification. He said  that if  established as WQMA, each has its  role and  share in the management of its water quality.

Engr. Raul Cubangay, Water Quality Specialist of EMB-DENR-CAR,  said there are factors to take into account in crafting proposal for WQMA designation such as data on monthly water sampling and monitoring of the river system with standard parameters to consider.

There are also lingering challenges threatening the river system such as the alleged traces of mercury and cyanide due to operations of small scale mining activities, solid waste management, siltation from sand and gravel operations, and constriction from overflow of septic tanks and other liquid wastes, he added.

Gathering and inventory of existing relevant data is also necessary to support documentation of the river likes maps identifying waterways, reservations, alienable and disposable lands, and other tenements and  historical accounts preparatory to Bued as WQMA.

Efforts being undertaken and support of various stakeholders are  also generated as supporting documents such as regular water quality monitoring of the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) apart from  what the EMB-DENR-CAR is carrying out, flood control measures, clean-up drives, partnerships with stakeholders among others.

Coordination among all stakeholders will be a continuing endeavor according to Cubangay for future activities and to come up with a proposal for WQMA for endorsement to the DENR Secretary.
