Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek to play Freddie Mercury in biopic of the Queen frontman, Bryan Singer in talks to direct

5 November 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like the long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is back on track, with Deadline reporting that Mr. Robot star Rami Malek is set to play the Queen frontman in the film, and Bryan Singer (X-Men: Apocalypse) is in talks to direct.

20th Century Fox and New Regency are now steering the project, which had previously been set up at Sony, with Sacha Baron Cohen (Grimsby) attached to play Mercury and Peter Morgan (The Queen) writing. Ben Whishaw (Spectre) was also set to star in the lead role, with Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) directing, but that incarnation also fell apart due to creative differences.

The most recent draft of Bohemian Rhapsody has been penned by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), while Graham King (The Departed) is producing and Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor also attached as music producers. The plan is to begin filming next year… »

Freddie Mercury biopic: Bryan Singer directing, Rami Malek to star

4 November 2016 5:17 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Brew Nov 7, 2016

The quest to make a movie about Queen frontman Freddie Mercury continues, this time with Bryan Singer and Rami Malek.

The Freddie Mercury biopic has had a bumpy ride to the screen thus far. At one stage, Sacha Baron Cohen was set to star as the Queen frontman, and was involved in the project for years. Then, Ben Whishaw seemed to be the new choice to play Mercury, but he too seems to have moved on.

In the director’s chair? The likes of Dexter Fletcher, Tom Hooper and Stephen Frears are amongst those that have been mentioned, or were attached at some stage.

Now though, pretty much out of the blue, we’ve got news of just who will be putting the film together, a film that goes by the name of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Rami Malek, the star of Mr Robot, is set to bring Freddie Mercury ot the screen. »

9 of This Year’s Overlooked Film Performances

3 November 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Dozens of actors delivered gorgeous character portraits for the silver screen in 2016. While some have moved to the forefront of the awards season conversation, others might have regrettably been pushed to the wayside. But they haven’t been forgotten! Here’s a friendly reminder about nine of this year’s most moving performances from Sally Fields, Ben Foster, and seven others! Colin Farrell, “The Lobster”Few films in 2016 were as delightfully odd as Yorgos Lanthimos’ bleak ensemble comedy “The Lobster,” starring Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, John C. Reilly, and Ben Whishaw. As a single drifter in a world where uncoupled individuals must check into a strange hotel to find a mate (and are threatened with being turned into an animal of their choosing should they fail) Farrell is as riotous in his deadpan deliveries as his character, David, is morose. The logic behind David’s choice to become a »

Newswire: Colin Firth joins Mary Poppins sequel, apparently wasn’t in it already

19 October 2016 6:30 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

According to Variety, Colin Firth has joined the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, the upcoming Emily Blunt-starring sequel to the original Julie Andrews film—or at least the P.L. Travers book that the original film was based on. The decision to cast Firth probably came after some Disney executive looked over the cast list and wondered where Colin Firth was. “You’ve got Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, and Meryl Streep,” this imaginary person said, “But where’s the cranky-yet-charming Englishman played with typical aplomb by Colin Firth? You can’t have a movie about British people without Mr. Darcy!”

At that point, Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall sheepishly hung his head and tried to come up with a character—any character—that could be played Firth. “Oh yeah,” he perks up. “Colin Firth is playing William Weatherall Wilkins, the president of the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. That »

Mary Poppins Returns Adds Emily Mortimer To Its Cast

7 October 2016 4:02 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

There has been talk of a sequel to the classic 1964 Disney film Mary Poppins for years – not least because that original film is loosely based upon a series of books by P.L. Travers, and there is much more to be mined from that source material. It will not be until December 25th 2018 that it finally arrives on cinema screens, however, as Mary Poppins Returns.

The musical will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into The Woods), from a script by David Magee (Life Of Pi), with original music by Scott Wittman (Hairspray). Set two decades after the events of the first film, Mary Poppins Returns takes place in depression-era London, with siblings Jane and Michael Banks (young children in the first film) struggling in their adult lives – and needing the help of their one-time magical nanny. Emily Blunt stars as Mary Poppins, with Meryl Streep appearing as her cousin, and Lin Manuel-Miranda playing streetlamp lighter, »
