NCDC receives and archives meteorological data from ships at sea, moored and drifting buoys, coastal stations, rigs, and platforms. The temporal frequency of the observations range from sub-hourly to six-hourly synoptic and are global in spatial coverage.

  • Global Marine Data
Historical and current marine observations from various national and international sources.
  • International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS)
Largest collection of verified surface marine observations in the world.
  • Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature (ERSST) v3b
NCDC operational sea surface temperature (SST) analysis product that uses in situ ship and buoy reports to reconstruct historical SSTs from the mid-19th century to present on monthly 2°x2° grids.
  • Daily ¼° Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST)
NCDC operational high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) analysis product that blends in situ (ship and buoy) reports and satellite data and uses optimum interpolation to fill spatial gaps, produced daily on ¼° grids.
  • Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) Climate Fleet (VOSClim)
VOSClim provides a high-quality subset of VOS data in both real time and delayed mode, supplemented with model feedback information and an extensive array of metadata.
  • Blended Sea Winds
Blended Sea Winds contain globally gridded, high-resolution ocean surface vector winds and wind stresses on a global 0.25° grid, and multiple time resolutions of six-hourly, daily, monthly, and 11-year (1995–2005) climatological monthlies.
  • Validation Datasets—Surface Flux Analysis (SURFA)
The World Climate Research Programme (SURFA) initiative is to facilitate the evaluation of forecast skills from Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and climate models as well as products from reanalysis and remotely sensed surface flux variables against high-quality in situ reference data. The datasets here include output from NWP model forecasts and reanalysis as well as in situ station observations.
  • Marine Data Map Access
GIS access to marine data using NCDC's Climate Data Online application.
