Scalp health facts & solutions

Understand a sensitive scalp

You may be suffering from one and not even realise it! "A sensitive scalp is effectively scalp skin that reacts more strongly to external influences than a normal scalp. The problem can be internal, or it can be exacerbated by factors like pollution, stress or excessive heat styling" says Dr. Ilyse Lefkowicz. The good news is that washing with head & shoulders shampoos can eliminate the problems caused by a sensitive scalp right from the very first wash.

Why do I have an itchy scalp and what can I do about it?

An itchy scalp can be a sign that you're developing dandruff. Our research* shows it's the most common, and most uncomfortable side effect of dandruff. The itch is actually a response to irritation, which starts with a tiny organism called Malassezia Globosa – which is harder to say than it is to sort out!

The organism breaks down your scalp oils to form oleic acid, which some people are sensitive to, triggering irritation and an itch. Scratching relieves the itch but can damage the delicate scalp, leading to more irritation. It can also damage hair fibres leaving them weaker and less resilient, so the sooner you stop the cycle the better.

For those of us with dandruff, the itch is easy to sort simply by treating the cause on a regular basis . Head & Shoulders expert Dr Ilyse Lefkowicz explains: 'Dandruff is a recurring condition, which means it can only be kept at bay with regular treatment.'

Why do I have a dry scalp and what can I do about it?

A dry scalp is sometimes – though not always – caused by dandruff. A tight feeling on your scalp and a sense of irritation are other signs you might have noticed, along with coarse or frizzy hair which isn't getting enough moisture.

This is because our skin's outermost natural moisture defences start losing moisture when they get damaged from dandruff. The key is to tackle the root cause of dandruff, and simply stop it from happening again.

Head & Shoulders scientist Dr Sian Morris says: 'Don't torture your scalp and your hair with excessive heat styling at high temperatures.' Regular use of Head & Shoulders can help to restore the natural balance of oils on your head, helping you get back great looking hair

Why is my scalp sensitive and what can I do about it?

If you have sensitive skin, you're more likely to suffer from dandruff, which is also known to aggravate sensitive skin.

Scratching makes your scalp even more irritable and that could cause your hair to start breaking off. It can easily be fixed with a few simple steps, starting with avoiding washing your hair in very hot water (never a good idea).

Head & Shoulders' sensitive scalp care range fights dandruff, and contains soothing menthol which has a calming effect on stressed-out heads. Head & Shoulders Sensitive is kind to your skin, so you can use it every day.

Why scalp care matters

A healthy scalp is the foundation for beautiful hair. Think of your scalp as being like the skin on your face, which needs cleansing and moisturising to stay looking good. Head & Shoulders scientists found that dandruff can have a negative effect on the quality of the hair.
