Cholesterol overview

Cholesterol is one of the single biggest risk factors for coronary heart disease – the UK’s biggest cause of death. Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) made by the body. It’s essential for good health but high levels may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Sometimes high cholesterol runs in families, but an unhealthy diet can cause abnormal levels. If changing your diet doesn't help, your doctor may prescribe medicine.
