Dwayne Johnson to Play Black Adam in ‘Shazam,’ Darren Lemke To Script (Exclusive)

Though Dwayne Johnson hasn’t been shy about teasing his potential involvement in DC and New Line’s “Shazam” movie, the superhero comicbook pic now looks closer to achieving lift-off.

Sources tell Variety that Darren Lemke is set to write the script with Johnson attached to star. Johnson will play Black Adam, who in recent issues of the DC comicbook, is more of an anti-hero trying to clear his name than a villain.

Hiram Garcia is producing.

Johnson confirmed the casting this morning by tweeting out which character he would be playing in the film.

Oren Aviv Joins Robert Simonds’ Next Gen Studio

Hollywood veteran executive Oren Aviv has joined Robert Simonds’ Next Gen Studio as president and chief content officer of its motion picture group.

Aviv said Next Gen is getting ready to produce and distribute up to 10 mainstream motion pictures per year in all genres.

“The studio will strategically focus on films in the $20 to $60 million range,” he added. “We can’t wait to bring our first few films into the market next year.”

Next Gen had previously hired former Viacom exec Thomas McGrath as its chief operating officer.

The four-month-old studio scored its first major television production commitment with NBC’s recent primetime pick-up of the drama series “State of Affairs,” starring Katherine Heigl. The show will debut this November.
