As Above, So Below (2014)- Horror | Thriller
When a team of explorers ventures into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead.
Director:John Erick Dowdle |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Any subterranean horror movie is going to earn its fair share of advanced skepticism, especially one the filmmaking team of John Erick and Drew Dowdle, who first made genre fans bristle with their [Rec] remake (Quarantine) and then working with M. Night Shymalan on Devil.
The November Man (2014) - [Opens 8/27]- Action | Crime | Thriller
An ex-CIA operative is brought back in on a very personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.
Director:Roger Donaldson |

The Buzz:
Pierce Brosnan and director Roger Donaldson reunite nearly 20 years after Dante's Peak for Bronan's Bondiest outing since Die Another Day. Apparently the studio is already at work on a potential sequel; often that's a last-minute Hail Mary for a film of questionable awareness, though. We hear Olga Kurylenko is underutilized and watching Bronan with his protege, played by Luke Bracey, is like "trying to get invested in a battle between Captain America and a tuna sandwich."
Ghostbusters (1984) - [30th Anniversary Re-release]- Comedy | Fantasy | Sci-Fi
Three unemployed parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service.
Director:Ivan Reitman |

The Buzz: This is the movie to take your kids to see this weekend.
The Congress (2013) - [Limited]- Animation | Drama | Sci-Fi
An aging, out-of-work actress accepts one last job, though the consequences of her decision affect her in ways she didn't consider.
Director:Ari Folman |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Director Ari Folman turns away from world politics in his follow-up to Waltz with Bashir with dystopian-future animation that satirizes both Old Hollywood and current celebrity culture. It looks beautiful for sure, though critics are less mesmerized by his latest work. Robin Wright Penn was born for this role, however, and she's the reason we'll watch.
A nagy füzet (2013) - [Limited]- Drama | War
Twin siblings enduring the harshness of WWII in a village on the Hungarian border hedge their survival on studying and learning from the evil surrounding them.
Director:János Szász |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Janos Szasz's WWII drama was shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Oscar last year and is set to run through fall season at the art-house. Szasz might stick with the genre for his next project, an adaptation of And the Rat Laughed by Israeli novelist and playwright Nava Semel.
Cantinflas (2014) - [Limited]- Biography | Drama
The untold story of Mexico's greatest and most beloved comedy film star of all time, from his humble origins on the small stage to the bright lights of Hollywood.
Director:Sebastian del Amo |

The Buzz: This biography of Mario Moreno and the character he played on screen (the actor and his creation would become inseparable) could be the surprise hit of the weekend even though it will be shipped out to just a few hundred screens. Star Oscar Jaenada has several projects coming out over the next year, including a supporting role in Hands of Stone with Edgar Ramirez and Robert De Niro.
Last Weekend (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama
When an affluent matriarch gathers her dysfunctional family for a holiday at their Northern California lake house, her carefully constructed weekend begins to come apart at the seams, leading her to question her own role in the family.

The Buzz: Patricia Clarkson has been sporadic with her movie appearances over the past few years, and it's possible that that the funding for this film hinged upon her participation (we don't know that for sure -- just theorizing). After watching the trailer, we immediately thought about what it would be like to see Clarkson lead this cast in a staged version of the material so she could really go far in her development of what seems to be a memorable character.
Starred Up (2013) - [Limited]- Drama
A troubled and explosively violent teenager is transferred to adult prison where he finally meets his match - a man who also happens to be his father.
Director:David Mackenzie |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: There's been quite a bit of talk about Jack O'Connell's forthcoming performance in Unbroken, but this truly independent project from David Mackenzie should boost the profiles of both the star and his director. Mackenzie made an initial splash with Young Adam though I say Hallam Foe is his best work to date. Starred Up arrives with the strongest reviews of Mackenzie's career, so we're more interested in tracking his next moves since O'Connell should find himself quite in demand in the new year.
Life of Crime (2013) - [Limited]- Comedy | Crime
Two common criminals get more than they bargained for after kidnapping the wife of a corrupt real-estate developer who shows no interest in paying the $1 million dollar ransom for her safe return.
Director:Daniel Schechter |
|

The Buzz: This kidnapping comedy seems like the kind of movie Jennifer Aniston would have starred in back at the beginning of the last decade when she made one of her best movies and one of her worst. As it stands currently, a cast that includes John Hawkes, Mos Def, Isla Fisher, and Mark Boone Junior seems deserving of a more distinguishable story.
