‘Escape From New York’ Reboot Following ‘Group’ Thinking of ‘Avengers,’ ‘X-Men,’ ‘Justice League’
30 August 2014 3:20 PM, PDT
Is mega-producer Joel Silver planning to take his long-planned “Escape From New York” reboot even further in the same “team” direction as “The Avengers,” “X-Men” and the upcoming “Justice League” movie? A new report from popular sci-fi site Starlog claims that the most recent draft of the script, which has “always had a team dynamic to it,” has elevated several former supporting characters to “co-leads,” perhaps in response to the current blockbuster marketplace. The screenplay is now said to find iconic antihero Snake Plissken flanked by returning mates Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief, and Brain, »

‘Boxtrolls’ Venice Review: A Charmless Misfire from Laika Studios
30 August 2014 2:01 PM, PDT
Even by the standards of kids’ movies about genocide and the frequent uselessness of fathers, “The Boxtrolls” isn't very much fun at all. A surprisingly charmless and aimless movie from Laika Studios, the upstart stop-motion artists who previously crafted the wonderfully dark “Coraline” and “Paranorman,” this latest venture seems destined to disturb young viewers while thoroughly boring their parents. Lacking appealing characters (or character design), this misfire will, with any luck, eventually become a forgotten footnote among the output of a production company that has, up until now, shown real promise at making films that defy the usual tropes and. »

Benedict Cumberbatch in ‘Imitation Game’ Steals the Show From Reese Witherspoon and Jon Stewart in Telluride
30 August 2014 9:18 AM, PDT
The man who might have gotten the biggest boost from Friday's opening of the Telluride Film Festival, Benedict Cumberbatch of “The Imitation Game,” wasn't even there to enjoy his acclaim. But his ears were surely burning, because his film opened to the kind of near-universal kudos that nearly eclipsed the somewhat mixed reaction to the day's other bows. On an opening night that found Telluride hosting three Toronto-defying world premieres, Jon Stewart enjoyed newfound star power as an off-camera writer-director with the debut of “Rosewater,” while Reese Witherspoon had some festivalgoers supposing that “Wild” could have her walking a red-carpet. »

‘November Man’ and ‘As Above’ Are No Match for ‘Guardians’ as Summer Draws to Close
30 August 2014 8:35 AM, PDT
Low-budget horror flick “As Above/So Below” and Pierce Brosnan thriller “November Man” won't put up much of a fight against box-office champ “Guardians of the Galaxy” over Labor Day Weekend. Thriller “As Above/So Below” will slightly exceed analysts’ $10 million weekend estimates. On Friday, the Universal film's box office hit $3.2 million and is expected to generate a $11.3 take over the holiday for a possible fourth-place finish. “As Above” may run neck-and-neck with Warner Bros. teen weepy, “If I Stay.” The teen melodrama took in $2.6 million in box office receipts on Friday and is headed for a $11.8 million weekend »

Venice Reviews: Al Pacino Achieves Late-Career Greatness in ‘Manglehorn'; Bogdanovich and Levinson, Not So Much
30 August 2014 3:04 AM, PDT
Probably the only director of this generation who's ever going to be produced by both Terence Malick and Judd Apatow, David Gordon Green has proven time and again that he doesn't need much plot to tell a riveting story. From the kids of “George Washington” to the stoners of “Pineapple Express” to the highway workers of “Prince Avalanche,” Green allows his characters to come alive through subtle revelation and interaction, creating indelible portraits of seemingly run-of-the-mill folks. His powers serve him well in “Manglehorn,” a film that offers Al Pacino in what will be remembered among his finest latter-career performances. »

Patrick Warburton Set to Reboot ‘The Tick’ as an Amazon Pilot
29 August 2014 10:14 PM, PDT
“Spoon!” Patrick Warburton may soon revive one of his most beloved, and obscure, characters. The “Rules of Engagement” and “Family Guy” star is set to reprise his role as “The Tick” in an Amazon pilot, an individual with knowledge of the deal confirmed to TheWrap. For nine episodes in 2001, Warburton brought to life Ben Edlund's lunatic superhero parody “The Tick.” Based on a comic book, “The Tick” animated series ran for three successful seasons on Fox Kids in the mid-1990s. It didn't fare as well in live-action and in prime time, despite near universal critical acclaim. Also read: Whit Stillman: ‘Cosmopolitan’ Tastes, »
