Weekend Box Office: Guardians Hold Court as Summer Movie Season Folds

Rest In Peace, 2014 Summer Movie Season.
The number one film of the season, Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy, stayed put as the number one movie at the North American box office this weekend as the summer movie season ended with a whimper. Two new films, Universal’s As Above/So Below and Relativity’s The November Man, were both dead on arrival. With schools going back into session and people enjoying summer’s remaining days, business was down 21% from last weekend as well as 5% from last year at this time.
With $16.3 million in additional sales from 3,462 theaters in its fifth weekend Guardians of the Galaxy became the highest-grossing film of the year. With $274.6 million in the bank, the Marvel/Disney blockbuster’s next milestone will be the $300 million mark, which it should hit within the next two weeks. Who exactly is the target market for Nintendo's Amiibo figures? Is it the same children and parents that have flocked to Skylanders and Disney Infinity? The answer is as obvious as it is distinct according to early pre-order data from one online retailer.
Earlier this morning Nintendo broke their silence and announced the Amiibo prices, the 12 launch figures that will work with Super Smash Bros. on Wii U with their packaging, and took the chain off retailers so they could begin accepting pre-orders. Now that several hours have passed, those pre-orders have begun to gain sales traction at Amazon.com in a way neither Skylanders or Disney Infinity ever has.

Disney Pixar’s Lava Clip Makes You Want to Lava Someone

Life can be lonely as a singing volcano and island unto oneself. Leave it to Pixar to bring this unlikely scenario to life as only their master storytellers and artists can.
Disney has released the first clip from Pixar's Lava, a new animated short that will debut next June in front of Pixar's Inside Out. The roughly 30-second clip introduces a volcano who sings a musical love story that transpires over the course of millions of years. He wants us to "send me someone to lava" as a ukulele plays out heartwarming chords.

Nintendo Amiibo Launch Figures Guide, Price and Packaging Images

Nintendo has been relatively quiet about their Amiibo plans since E3 back in June other than to reiterate that the Toys to Life figures would be available this holiday season and be compatible with Super Smash Bros. on Wii U. That silence finally broke this morning with the Nintendo Amiibo launch figures list, colorful character-themed packaging for all 12 launch figures, retail pricing and active pre-orders that you can place right now.
The 12 Nintendo Amiibo figures that will be available on the yet-to-be-announced launch date are Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Marth, Link, Samus, Fox, Kirby, and Pikachu. That leaves Kid Icarus and Zelda as the only two revealed Amiibo figures that will not be a part of Amiibo Wave 1.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Digital Release Date in October, Blu-ray and DVD November

Dreamworks Animation's ambitious sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, has charted a course for Digital HD on October 21, followed by a November 11 Blu-ray and DVD release. At this time there is no word of a How to Train Your Dragon 2 Blu-ray 3D release, but we'll be sure to pass along any updates about this version should they come along.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 hit a little turbulence at the North American box office as it failed to live up to ticket sales expectations despite overwhelmingly positive reviews including 92 percent fresh at Rotten Tomatoes and an "A" CinemaScore. I believe disinterest in the film came from an oversaturation of the Dragons brand through a television series and direct-to-video specials. Even if that did play a role, overseas territories helped boost gross revenue over $500 million.

The 2014 FedEx Cup is back in action this weekend with the Deutsche Bank Championship at Tpc Boston in Massachusetts. Rory McIlroy is already off to a hot start in Round 1 with a -3 through four holes as of the time of this article to top the leaderboard. Typically PGA Tour events run from Thursday through Sunday though that is not the case with the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship. What would be a great regular season match up will amount to little more than a competition for the final rosters spots in tonight's 2014 NFL preseason Week 4 Denver Broncos vs Dallas Cowboys game. There won't be any Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, or TV access to the game outside local Dallas and Denver markets. Rather than risking Manning to injury, Denver will trot out backups Brock Osweiler and Zac Dysert for some extended playing time. You never know when Manning could down given his age and injury history, so the competence of the backups will be key for Denver moving into the regular season.

It's still the Johnny Manziel show for the Cleveland Browns until the 2014 regular season gets underway. With Brian Hoyer the designated starter and expected to rest tonight in Week 4 vs the Chicago Bears, Manziel should get a decent amount of reps against the Bears second and third-string defense. Even so, this Bears vs Browns game won't be found on TV outside local markets and must be live online streamed.
Manziel should be splitting time with Connor Shaw would could emerge as the second-string quarterback if Manziel struggles again and Shaw excels.
The Browns and Bears are no stranger to closing the NFL preseason against one another having done so for the past 10 years. They've split those games right down the middle so there are bragging rights at stake tonight that a handful of people might actually care about.

Disney Infinity 2.0 Hiro and Baymax Figures From Big Hero 6 Announced

The last of the Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes Walmart leaks has been officially confirmed with yesterday's announcement that Disney Infinity 2.0 Hiro and Baymax figures are on the way to a Toy Box 2.0 near you.
Hiro and Baymax are the titular stars of Disney Animation's Big Hero 6 film coming to theaters in November. The boy, Hiro Hamada, is a genius inventor and creator of "Big Hero 6" who uses his mind to control microbots. His brain is truly his most powerful gift and weapon. Baymax is his trusty robot and sidekick who has kung fu fighting moves and a rocket fist that pummels any enemy it connects with.
Disney Interactive has slotted Hiro and Baymax into the Disney Originals line alongside Stitch, Meridia, Donald Duck and others. All of the Disney Originals will play in the Toy Box 2.0, but none are playable in the three Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Play Sets announced thus far. »
American Horror Story: Freak Show Caged Teaser is Confining

FX isn't shying away from giving us disturbing little glimpses of American Horror Story: Freak Show with the latest bringing new meaning to the term, "confined."
The latest American Horror Story: Freak Show Caged teaser via EW features a trapped woman, most likely a contortionist of some sort, stuffed into a bird cage like meat into a Hot Pocket. She's got freaky blue hand syndrome going on and I have no idea what that means. There's also a man with extremely bony fingers and apparently the ability to keep this poor woman calm while she mimics a piece of luggage.
The tag line for this trailer reads simply, "birds of a feather flock together..."

Breaking Bad Complete Series Blu-ray Barrel Returning from Sold Out on October 28

Last fall as Vince Gilligan and AMC's Breaking Bad was wrapping up its final season, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released the lavish and oh-so-appropriate Breaking Bad Complete Series Blu-ray barrel set to the retail equivalent of a standing ovation. It quickly sold out to never be available other than the secondary market again in the neighborhood of $400, or so we thought.
Breaking Bad and its stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn attended the Emmy's as a team for the final time this past Sunday and walked away with all the big awards they were up for including Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama, Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. The opportunity was ripe for Sony to take advantage of the renewed interest in Breaking Bad and that's precisely what they have done.

First Look at Lucy Lawless in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Lucy Lawless will be mixing it up with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and pals on the upcoming sophomore season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. A first look at Lawless from the set was posted online by Marvel today that reveals little over than what her hair will look like. In Season 2, Lawless plays Agent Isabelle Hartley who apparently survived the Hydra takeover of S.H.I.E.L.D. and finds her way into Coulson's path. Little else is known about Hartley at this time other than she's a seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran that will aid Coulson in his attempt to rebuild the agency as its new director while Nick Fury operates in whereabouts unknown under his own orders. Transformers: Age of Extinction Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD Coming September 30

Paramount Home Entertainment has formally announced a September 30 release date for Transformers: Age of Extinction on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD following a tweet announcement earlier in the day by star Mark Wahlberg and our own sources revealing the date several days ago. The Digital HD version will bow two weeks earlier on September 16.
Transformers: Age of Extinction stars Wahlberg along with Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz and Kelsey Grammer as the fourth film in the franchise from director Michael Bay. As with each previous installment it has done explosive box office business, thus far to the tune of $1.065 billion in worldwide ticket sales. No doubt the introduction of the Dinobots helped sell a few extra tickets.

Disney Infinity Star Wars Blatantly Teased by Disney Interactive

When Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes was first announced, forward lookers put two and two together to surmise that 2015 and the Disney Infinity 3.0 edition stood a reasonable chance of being aligned to Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Episode VII, coming to theaters in December 2015. This was especially true considering Yoda's lightsaber made an appearance in the original Disney Infinity as a reward for unlocking every character in the game.
Disney Infinity 3.0 paying a visit to a galaxy far, far away is now a little more real following a rather blatant tease by Disney Interactive executives John Blackburn and John Vignocchi. Prepare to save the world from Brainiac and his diabolical plan to shrink planet earth this holiday season as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced the Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham release date is locked into November 11.
To accompany the release date announcement, Wbie has passed along the game's official and finalized key art from Hubris Studios starring the caped crusader himself, Batman. The key also features a selection of heroes and villains such as Brainiac, Lex Luthor, Superman and Wonder Woman, but Batman is clearly the star of his latest DC Comics-inspired Lego adventure.

Meet Jimmy McGill, the Star of Better Call Saul

In an episode of Breaking Bad, which by the way cleaned up at the 66th Annual Emmy Awards earlier tonight in its swan song appearance, Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) recounts a moment in his past when he successfully pulled off convincing a woman he was Kevin Costner. He didn't accomplish this unlikely feat because he looks or sounds anything like Mr. Costner. Saul's reasoning is it worked because he truly believed he was Kevin Costner, and thus the poor woman picked up on his vibe.
This scene tells us that not only is Saul's back story incredibly intriguing, but he has experience in roleplaying to suit a purpose. It's no mystery that Saul Goodman will return in Better Call Saul in February 2015, but is Saul Goodman really his name? The answer is absolutely not.
