Screen Australia Commit To $20 Million Investment

Screen Australia has announced a $20 million investment into twelve new film and television projects. With a diverse slate covering features, adult television drama projects and children's television series, the investment will trigger $100 million in production. The commitment from Screen Australia will create 66 hours of television alone, generating budgets of $73.6 million. The feature films approved include writer/director David Michod's (pictured) follow-up to Animal Kingdom, a futuristic western titled The Rover. »
Aussie Features selected for Toronto

Cate Shortland's long awaited follow-up to Somersault, Lore (pictured), has been selected to have its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, along with Wayne Blair's The Sapphires, which received a very warm reception when it played at the Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year. Both films will screen in the Special Presentations program, designed to showcase world-class films by established talent. »
'The Wolverine' To Shoot Next Week

With sets being constructed in the background and the odd couple of Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Us director James Mangold by his side, Hugh Jackman quickly assumed control of proceedings at Sydney's Fox Studios press conference earlier this morning. Sporting a burst blood vessel in his right eye from a "very energetic game of tag with my kids", Jackman was every bit the charmer, joking about offering the Pm a role as his stunt double while also proudly promoting local film crews. "Aussies punch above our weight not only as actors but as crew," declared Jackman. »

This result marks the fourth highest grossing opening weekend of all time at the local box office. »
Russell Crowe Set To Make Directorial Debut

News is in that Russell Crowe is set to make his directorial feature debut with a biopic about late comedian Bill Hicks - even though the actor isn't exactly the first personality that comes to mind when you think "comedy"... The script has been penned by Crowe's long-time friend Mark Staufer with the actor attached to the project for years, even at one point considering to star as its main man. »
James Cameron In Town For The Australian International Design Awards

Alongside the usual mix of endorsers, designers and journalists, a particularly special guest attended the Australian International Design Awards this year: Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron. Unparalleled as a director, at least in terms of commercial success (Cameron has helmed the top two highest grossing films of all time), his short stopover in Sydney came courtesy of the Deepsea Challenger Research Submersible taking home the top prize at the 2012 awards. »
