FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I am pleased with today’s endorsement by the UN’s Fifth Committee of the recommendations of the Secretary-General’s Senior Advisory Group on UN Peacekeeping regarding the rates of reimbursement to troop contributing countries. These recommendations replace the current arbitrary reimbursement rates with ones driven by actual data, extend the typical troop rotation period from six to twelve months--saving millions and allowing troops on the ground to gain valuable expertise--and introduce rewards and penalties to better incentivize troop performance and capabilities. Once implemented, these measures will go a long way toward revitalizing UN peacekeeping and helping to prepare ongoing and future peacekeeping missions to meet future challenges.
