‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Wins Cold U.S. Box Office with $10.2 Million, ‘The Identical’ Tanks

9 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney-Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the summer’s biggest success story, ruled at the sleepy U.S. box office with an estimated $10.2 million at 3,221 locations in its sixth weekend.

“Guardians” provided the only heat at multiplexes after the major studios had eschewed opening any new releases — and moviegoers responded by staying away, leading to what’s likely to be the quietest weekend of the year as “Guardians” notched the lowest first-place finish of 2014. The top 10 took in a combined $48 million, or about half of what “Guardians” grossed in its opening weekend on Aug. 1-3.

The only new entry was Freestyle’s faith-based “The Identical,” which showed little traction with $1.9 million at 1,966 sites, counter to recent Christian-driven successes such as “Heaven Is for Real,” “God’s Not Dead” and “Son of God.” “The Identical” came in 11th behind Universal’s seventh weekend of  “Lucy.”

Chris Rock’s ‘Top Five’ Sparking Bidding Wars in Toronto

8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Lionsgate, CBS Films and Relativity are among the studios vying for Chris Rock’s “Top Five” after the comedy received an enthusiastic reception at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend, according to four individuals with knowledge of the bidding.

Sony Pictures has also sniffed around the movie, but doesn’t seem to be in the mix any longer.

Scott Rudin produced the film about a single day in the life of a comedian and movie star. The film cost roughly $6 million to produce and marks Rock’s third behind-the-camera effort after “Head of State” and “I Think I Love My Wife.” “Top Five” co-stars Kevin Hart and Rosario Dawson.

The film premiered at Toronto on Saturday and the individuals said bidding could hit $7 million or higher and be the festival’s biggest deal. It is seen as one of Toronto’s most commercially viable projects.

J.K. Rowling Fires Back at Dumbledore's Homophobic Critic

10 hours ago | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

When you're the richest author in the world - let alone, a human being - and your main character has magical powers, then why tolerate empty criticism? Or, for that matter, bigotry? Which was exactly what Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling did not tolerate this weekend when a posting on Twitter attempted to attack her for making Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore gay. Wrote one Frank Fraticelli - who has since locked his account - in a message addressed to Rowling: "once u revealed Dumbledore was homosexual I stopped being a fan. Nice how u blindsided us with that one. Enjoy »

Toronto Film Review: Reese Witherspoon in ‘The Good Lie’

19 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A good lie, according to Huckleberry Finn, is a prevarication where the “rightness” of the outcome excuses the “wrongness” of having fibbed in the first place. to a film that isn’t really about her character at all — nor should it be. But if that mistruth helps spread the word about the Sudanese situation, earning Warner Bros. a pretty penny in the process, how wrong can it be?

The thing is, we miss Reese. Over the past decade, the actress has grown too scarce on the bigscreen, and though “Wild” promises to be her big awards vehicle this year, the advertising campaign for “The Good Lie” suggests a chance to see America’s sweetheart in feisty “Erin Brockovich” or “The Blind Side” mode, demanding, “Who do I have to screw around here to see a goddamn immigration supervisor?” in her most sexually empowered redneck drawl.

That happens, by the way, »

What Happens When You Accuse a Major Hollywood Director of Rape?

30 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

He couldn’t see past the walls at first, but then the wrought-iron gate swung open and the limo he was riding in pulled past the gate, and Michael Egan got his first view of the M&C estate. The 12,600-square-foot Spanish Colonial, surrounded by immense columns and gaping bay windows, was previously owned by the rap mogul Suge Knight. Inside was a home theater and more than one aquarium. Outside he could see a Ferrari and Lamborghini, a tennis court, a swimming pool, and a hot tub big enough for a dozen people. To the neighbors, it might have seemed like just another Encino McMansion. To a 16-year-old from Nebraska, it seemed like everything he thought Hollywood would be. Egan was slim with dark hair, pale skin, and a bright smile. The son of divorced parents, he had been a popular kid who dreamed of being Tom Cruise. He »

Ansel Elgort is the main attraction at 'Men, Women and Children' Toronto premiere

52 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Sorry, Adam Sandler - Ansel Elgort is in vogue. The "Grownups" actor was arguably usurped by his "Men, Women and Children" co-star at the film's Toronto premiere on Saturday, with the "Fault in Our Stars" heartthrob winning loads of attention from a legion of young female fans who assembled to greet him (photos below). “I’ll give it all to Ansel,” Sandler told Variety on the red carpet. “I love that kid. He’s a sweet kid and it’s just a nice energy to be around. He wasn’t a superstar when we shot this movie but now he’s certainly having a good time.” Luckily for Elgort's admirers, the young actor stopped to interact and take pictures before heading into the venue for the screening of his latest film, a dramedy co-written and directed by Jason Reitman ("Juno," "Young Adult") that also stars Jennifer Garner, Rosemarie Dewitt, Judy Greer, »

Toronto Showcases Wide Range of Asian Films

56 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

More than any festival outside the Asian region, Toronto serves up the widest range of contemporary Asian cinema each year.

The festival can perhaps thank the city’s multi-cultural makeup: Toronto has significant Indian and East Asian populations. And the festival can be grateful for its large scale, which allows it more room to cover the diversity of the world’s most prolific filmmaking region than smaller events.

But credit also should go to Asian programmer Giovanna Fulvi and Tiff’s chief selector Cameron Bailey, who makes several trips per year to the region and is personally responsible for the selection

of Indian films.

Bailey has been credited with popularizing the term “Hindie,” short for “Hindi indie.” It reflects the trend for internationally aware and financially savvy Indian filmmakers to break ranks with the country’s traditional film financing sources (and some Bollywood stereotypes), and instead use co-productions and private »

Toronto Film Review: ‘This Is Where I Leave You’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sitting shiva makes the heart grow fonder (and the libido rage and the repressed grievances runneth over) in “This Is Where I Leave You,”. Repping a concerted effort by “Night at the Museum” and “Cheaper By the Dozen” helmer Shawn Levy to spread his wings beyond the gilded cage of family-friendly tentpoles, this alternately manic and mawkish adaptation of Jonathan Tropper’s 2009 novel aims for “Kramer Vs. Kramer” and “Terms of Endearment” territory and ends up somewhere closer to a Semitic “Home For the Holidays” or “August: Osage County.” But a tremendous ensemble cast gives the pic a significant boost, especially when they’re allowed to act rather than merely act out. Opening wide Sept. 19 following its Toronto Film Festival bow, “This” occupies an increasingly rare space on a major studio’s release slate: a literary adaptation that’s neither tween-centric nor awards bait, but which could generate some modest »

‘This Is Where I Leave You’ Review: Jane Fonda, Tina Fey, Jason Bateman Star in Film With No Characters

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

If Hollywood movies are any sort of reliable indicator then every form of familial drama can be overcome over the course of a long holiday. If you and your family are at odds for any reason, and you have spent decades fostering an unhealthy but persistent streak of resentment, all you need to do is alternate public, weepy confessions with bouts of wry, overwritten, self-deprecating humor. It also helps if you have an affair or ingest illegal drugs. Also, be very wealthy. Follow these rules, and any history of abuse, neglect, infidelity, divorce and even – in the specific case »

Is Beyonce really a lock to win Grammy for Album of the Year?

1 hour ago | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Scroll through Gold Derby's music forum and you'll see that lots of posters believe Beyonce is a lock to win the Grammy for Album of the Year – an honor that's eluded her so far in her career. From their absolute declarations, one would even think Naras already has the trophy engraved for Queen B. Certainly, their reasonings sound rational. Beyonce is a Grammy darling, having already won 17 trophies, including her eyebrow-raising victory for Song of the Year “Single Ladies,” a tune totally against the grain of what usually takes that category. She is one of the most revered solo artists out there right now—a superstar who has survived for over 15 years.   Then there is the album itself -- the genius and unprecedented secret release of "Beyonce" that allowed the album to sell more than 800,000 digital copies in the three days. It created massive hype and critical acclaim. However, there are several equally compelling rea. »

Toronto Film Review: ‘The Theory of Everything’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The intricate workings of a rare and remarkable mind are rendered in simple, accessible terms in “The Theory of Everything,”. Striving to pay equal tribute to Hawking’s first wife, Jane (on whose memoir the film is based), and her tireless devotion to him until their 25-year marriage ended in 1995, director James Marsh similarly attempts to find intimate, personal applications for Hawking’s grand cosmic inquiries, tracing the story of how the author of “A Brief History of Time” came to defy time itself. Still, what’s onscreen is less a cerebral experience than a stirring and bittersweet love story, inflected with tasteful good humor, that can’t help but recall earlier disability dramas like “My Left Foot” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” Superb performances from Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones should stand the Focus Features release in good critical and commercial stead when it bows Nov. 7 Stateside. »
