The Kindle Experience

Read in Bright Sunlight

E Ink screens look and read just like real paper. Kindle e-readers' matte screens reflect light like ordinary paper and use no backlighting, so you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room. Unlike LCD screens, E Ink screens have no glare.

Lighter, More Compact Than Ever

Less than 170 grams. Lighter than a paperback, fits in your pocket.

Up to One Month Battery Life

No battery anxiety - read for up to one month on a single charge.

Sharp, Clear Text

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp, print-like text similar to what you see in a physical book. The screen's 100% aperture ratio means no gaps between pixels. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving image quality.

Easy on the Eyes

E Ink uses actual ink particles to create crisp, print-like text similar to what you see in a physical book. And Kindle e-readers also use proprietary, hand-built fonts to take advantage of the special characteristics of the ink to make letters appear clear and sharp.

Read in Any Position

When you read for long periods of time, you often switch positions to get more comfortable. Kindle has a uniform contrast ratio that does not change with your viewing angle, so you can read in any position.

All the Books You Love

Massive Selection

Access to millions of books, including latest bestsellers, Kindle exclusives and more.

Free Book Samples

Download and read first chapters for free before you decide to buy.

Buy Once, Read Everywhere

Kindle books can be read on your Kindle, iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Mac or PC with Amazon's free Kindle Reading Apps.

Exclusive Kindle Titles

Hundreds of thousands of Kindle exclusive titles that you won't be able to find anywhere else.

Adjustable Text Sizes, Font Choices

Kindle has eight adjustable font sizes to suit your reading preference. You can increase the text size of your favourite book with the push of a button. If your eyes tire, simply increase the font size and continue reading comfortably. Kindle also has three font styles to choose from - all optimised and hand-tuned to provide the best reading experience.

Custom Fonts

Kindle uses hand-built, custom fonts and font-hinting to make words and letters more crisp, clear, and natural-looking. Font hints are instructions, written as code, that control points on a font character's line, improving legibility at small font sizes where few pixels are available. Hinting is a mix of aesthetic judgments and complicated technical strategies. Proprietary font-hinting has been designed to optimise specifically for the special characteristics of electronic ink.

Support for Non-Latin Characters

Kindle supports the display of non-Latin characters, so you can read books and documents in the translation that's right for you. Kindle displays Cyrillic (such as Russian), Japanese, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) and Korean characters, in addition to Latin and Greek scripts.

Real Page Numbers

The pages of a Kindle book are matched to the text in a print book to identify the corresponding "real" page number. Easily reference and cite passages or read alongside others in a book club or class. Available on tens of thousands of Amazon's most popular Kindle books. Page numbers are displayed when you push the menu button.

Precise 5-Way Controller

Kindle has an easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. No on-screen fingerprints.

Fast Page Turns

Kindle's powerful processor is tuned for fast, seamless page turns.

Whispersync

Whispersync technology synchronises your last page read, bookmarks and annotations across your devices so you can always pick up where you left off.

Free Library Backup

An automatic back up of your library is created in the cloud. Re-download wirelessly anytime for free.

Search Wikipedia and the Web

Kindle makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Just enter a word or phrase and Kindle will search every instance across your Kindle library, in the Kindle Store, on Wikipedia, or the Web using Google search.

Built-In Dictionary with Instant Lookup

Come across a word you don't know? Kindle includes The Oxford Dictionary of English with over 250,000 entries and definitions for free. Kindle lets you instantly look up the definition without ever leaving the book - simply select the word with the cursor and the definition will automatically display at the bottom of the screen.

Supports Children's Books and Comics

Kindle supports children's books with Kindle Text Pop-Up, and comic books with Kindle Panel View which allows you to read a comic book panel by panel.

Personal Document Delivery

Kindle makes it easy to take your personal documents with you, eliminating the need to print. You and your approved contacts can e-mail documents - including Word, PDF and more - directly to your Kindle and read them in Kindle format. You can also send documents to your Kindle using Send to Kindle.

Bookmarks and Annotations

Add annotations to text, just like you might write in the margins of a book, with a virtual keyboard that appears just when you need it. And because it is digital, you can edit, delete, and export your notes. You can highlight and clip key passages and bookmark pages for future use. You'll never need to bookmark your last place in the book, because Kindle remembers for you and always opens to the last page you read.

Share Meaningful Passages

Share your passion for books and reading with friends, family, and other readers around the world by posting meaningful passages to social networks like Facebook and Twitter directly from Kindle, without leaving the page. Want to post or tweet about a great new novel or autobiography? When you highlight or create a note in your book, you can easily share it with your social network. Help your network of family and friends discover new authors and books.

Public Notes

Share your notes and see what others are saying about Kindle books. 5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome product ! 14 October 2013

After a fortnight of owning a kindle, I would like to declare that this is,hands down, by far,the best gadget I've ever owned.
It is light-weight, quite comfortable to hold in one hand, easy to navigate single-handedly,very good battery backup,anti-glare screen , good processing speed and so on.
The best part is, it increases your capacity (and interest of-course!) of reading very much. You will hung up on reading for like hours.
Apart from books, kindle is a great tool for reading comics ! I was almost shocked with the ease and experience of reading the same. It has Kindle Panel Viewer which is an awesome feature for reading comics.

My observations so far :

1) Go for Kindle instead of Kindle Paperwhite for following reasons:
a) Trust me,you do not want any accidental page turnover, change of settings etc. by a random touch
b) Will be able to hold it anyway you want, whereas in paperwhite, you have to hold it from sides or behind, which becomes
quite uncomfortable for long reading hours.
b) For those who are beginners, this is more than enough for you to get going.
c) And of course It is cheaper ! (paying almost double for just reading light and touch seems to be over the top)

2) If you are very much interested in reading in night, then better buy a reading light ( plenty available on eBay etc)

3) Buy some sort of protection for screen like screen-guard, leather pouch etc

4) Black Model looks better as it gives more contrast to the white screen and thus black letters look more crisp.

5) Don't worry about "compatible-eBook-format-content". There are hundreds of converters for converting any type of file into any format you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Library In Your Bag (And It Pays You Back) 2 September 2013
The book-lover that I am, I fell in love with Kindle the moment it was released in the US a few years ago. For the first time my dream of carrying a large number of books in a very light and portable electronic device had come true. Over the years I used many Kindles and many types of Kindles because members of my extended family kept helping themselves to my kindles -- ebooks and everything.

Here are a few things that you should note if you are contemplating to buy a Kindle:

1. What Do You Get: For the suggested price you get a Kindle and a USB cord. The cord can be used for several things (once you become experienced), but mostly for charging your Kindle from a computer or from any standard device that accepts USB plugin. An indicator comes on when the Kindle is in charging mode.

2. The Device: Handling Kindle is a pleasure because of its light weight, streamlined body, and just the right size for handling -- neither too big for comfort nor too small like a mobile device. There are several buttons at the bottom that help you with navigation and selection.

3. The Display: The screen is very kind on the eyes, they use a special technology known as Electronic Ink to make reading a great experience. It needs ambient light to read it, just as a book needs light. Of course, a tiny LED rechargeable light (available for less than Rs. 250) will help you to read it even at night without disturbing others.

4.Comparison With Non Kindle Devices: I have used a number of non Kindle devices, and none of them comes even remotely close to any type of Kindle. Neither in looks, nor in reading comfort, nor in technology.

5. Battery Life: I wish that all chargeable devices has such battery-life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good companion 13 June 2013
I had an IPad before i bought the Kindle. IPad is good for a lot of things but not for reading. I found it too heavy to hold for long periods and especially when you are working on LCD screens all day it is very bad for your eyes to come back home and read on an IPad. So I went for the Kindle and it has been a good friendship from then. It saves me from eye strain, there are no distractions in jumping into other apps and it helps me focus on one activity - makes me enjoy my books even better.

It is the lightest and cheapest Kindle and good for reading outdoors too. I feel this is going to be a great device when i travel - lightweight and immersive. If you read a lot in the night and dont want to have a light switched on - go for paperwhite. Otherwise, this is a great deal - get your reading companion for a long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like It 19 October 2013

I have been using this product for 3 months .It is a very nice product .It costs nearly 6000/-with that amount of money I can Have a Low grade tablet .Where I can read stories .But The kindle is a different one .
Pros .-
1) Display.- I have only heard that it looks and feels like a paper .But until I use it I don't Have any idea that the display is so smooth and paper like .
2)Built .- The plastic quality and the buttons are positioned very intelligently. Using Only one hand one can turn the page as well as hold the kindle .
3)Weight .- The weight is not as much as holding an ipad. Very comfortably one can hold and read on kindle for hours.
4)Battery.- Long Long Long .With 3 Hours of daily reading the battery lasts for two weeks

Cons.-
1)Reading Light .- Lack of reading light .The paper white model costs too much
2)Wifi browsing & the experimental browser is not so good .
3)Wifi Drains the battery faster .With wifi is on the battery lasts for only two to three days.
4)It can read pdf but the mobi or amazon books format is good for kindle .Better support for pdf is needed.
5)the 1.4 gb memory is sufficient if one only reads mobi ,txt ans such formats .Pdf needs much more memory .So a 4 or 8 gb memory would be great .
