Canon India teases 'something big' coming soon

Canon India has posted a teaser on its Facebook page showing a 1-series DSLR alongside the words 'Get your camera ready, something BIG is coming'. Being a teaser rather than a leak, the meaning of the post is open to interpretation, although 'get your camera ready' suggests that the new product might be a lens, rather than the 7D Mark II which a lot of you (as well as us) were probably hoping for.

Our money is on a redesigned version of the venerable 100-400mm F4.5–5.6L IS USM zoom which was released in 1998 and has looked ripe for replacement for some time now.

With Photokina just around the corner, the rumors about what might be announced from the major manufacturers are already flying. What do you think Canon's teaser might mean? Let us know in the comments.

It resembles a photo-walk invitation locked to certain camera model (pro, pro-am)owners.

Alas, it's been enough miscommunicated for the lack of a public statement from the campaigners. However, people either expect something to brag about(I do.) their being a canon owner (I am.), or how advanced their camera company is to take care of them by introducing new technology.

Most of those who would not understand this might really be impressed by a shutter sound produced by certain camera brand and go forth to make a purchase. I guess it's time (that) canon should claim their brand status, introduce tight product lines (Cinema system, for example) along the platforms of apertures and camera sensors rather than a combination of settings and photo-sharing features that have been steadily mocking the seriousness out of pro cameras and accessories, to say the least.

Speculation on an existing ad that has been released is not a rumor, it's speculation.

Had they said "we heard from Bill, who heard from Pete, who heard from Roger, who heard from Sue, who heard from Nate, who heard from Alicia, who heard from....."

That would be a rumor.

Read the blurb again 'Get your camera ready, something BIG is coming'. Then look at the camera body in the teaser which is a 1-series. This clearly means the new gadget is NOT a camera but a lens. Now, since the word 'big' is where the accent is, it means a big lens. The 1-series suggests it would not be cheap since it is probably aimed at pros or advanced amateurs/enthusiasts.

All adds up to a new 100-400L or similar. I for one cannot wait. Sick of my buddy shoving his new Nikon 80-400 MkII in my face every time we go out to shoot.

OMG you're right the last reply to the teaser post on their facebook page is from them and it just has a link to the photo competition page. I guess they realized they were getting peoples hopes up and had to limit the damage lol.

My hope, and what Canon really needs is a new BIG 36+ MP sensor. They have suffered in sales for years because of this over-site. It has prohibited the comparison of Canon lenses with Nikon lenses at 36MP. Without the ability to compare, Nikon wins every time.
What surprises me most is that with hundreds of employes, any new product release remains a secret.

Canon doesn't make lenses to take FULL advantage of 36MP+
Nor Nikon even till now (2014) with their D800 series dSLRs

think about that before declaring a need for Canon to go head long into 36MP+

Actually Sdaniella person, the D800 series came out two and one half years ago (2/2012).
Maybe think about that before declaring no need for Canon to produce a 36MP camera.

I don't know. I hope it's something good. If it's something good then everyone is happy. I wouldn't mind if it's something of a 22mp or 26mp. DR advantage of D8xx is under 400 ISO. Above that it performs similiar or inferior to a Canon 6D. If canon could make something with good DR @ 800-2000 or something that'd be great

It may surprise you to learn that the D800 has sold less than almost every other top-of-range DSLR on the market.

I still use a battered 8mp DSLR from 2007 as a backup camera, and had photos from it published in a premium fashion magazine last year. Until you're printing all your photos on A0 paper or viewing on a 60-inch higher-than-4k TV, all those pixels are just wasted money.

so far
as Cine goes
progressively better stills can be captured from Cine frames

and most integrated dcams and mirrorless ilc dcams with video, lack full M/M ISO control for video modes (no ESLV, just AE video) unlike their EOS LV dSLRs with ExpSim LV Cine counterparts.

I have no interest in auto-exposure only video any more than auto-hdr-only stills (I prefer full ev control over in-camera hdr modes)

also, prefer multi-iso (not single ISO) control IN-CAMERA LIVE (not just in post) using ESLV (Exposure Simulation Live Preview*) for HDR stills, and yes, HDR video (in-camera, not in post)

*ExpSim LV: Real-Time Evaluative Metering with Image Sensor

I tried many times to get a copy of the 100-400 that was decent wide open at the long end but failed miserably and settled on the 70-300 L instead which has been excellent.

If it is a new 100-400 I'm 100% certain it will be a fantastic lens but I'm even more certain it will cost 1.5-2x the price of the outgoing model but here's hoping!

Its an Upgrade option.....Just give them your 7D, you will get an Upgraded Body..... (I wish it must be... ). that's the best service canon can do for the photographers using premium bodies, instead of finding and selling used body for purchasing the new entry.

It will not be something that people want or need but it will be something Canon thinks should be forced on them,like EOS-M etc.

Love my EOS M. Ranks as one of the classic mirrorless bargains if you can live without super-fast focus. In any other manufacturer's offering the 22mm bundled lens alone would sell for the price of the camera+lens bundle that I got from Canon. I doubt we will see discounts on the next model anywhere near the eos m discounts.

Output is like their dslrs. With a cheap adapter it is all backwards-compatible, even if the focus might be slow. I fail to see the problem; Canon has to go mirrorless and the fundamentals are sound. I am just grateful this sort of lens quality in a small size can be had so cheaply. New models will of course be improved (usually).

Forced? But the nikon line-up isn't any better. You have to do many compromises if you don't happen to get D4s (yeah, don't believe D810 can AF as well). Whilst canon AF is closer to their flagship product..

maybe the best quote for launching a new camera will be

I hope it's a replacement for the 7D. The 7D is still a phenomenal camera in many ways except the sensor/ADC is quite long in the tooth. I've got a lot of Canon lenses waiting for a new body with a revolutionary sensor concept.

A new 100-400 would be welcome too but only along with the new camera. A 500f5.6L would be even better if was reasonably priced.

Something Big. My guess is a contest for that part of the world. Meanwhile, I'm dreaming of an EF 100-400 Diffractive Optic lens that's much smaller than the current 100-400L. Are you listening Canon? Oh, and maybe a weather sealed, fixed aperture EF-S 10-22 UWA lens too.

Looks like a Canon competition to me..

I don't think any high end 1 series or L lens is being released first in India.

This is a very niche & limited market in India. Also most of high end products are released pretty late in India (as compared to global launch).

Who knows..I may be wrong...Why not a Canon Smart Phone with 4K Video????

I think this is going to be a camera. A camera in the background is the most obvious hint. EOS-1 is another hint, it means that this will not be an upgrade of any existing model, it will be a new line which would as important as EOS-1 was for Canon. That's why it is BIG.
'Get your camera ready' is simply an aphorism meaning a star will emerge.

As I said don't take it literally. We all use it. For example, get your camera ready, game is about to start, bride is about to enter, XYZ is about to walk on red carpet ..... etc. etc. It simply means that something important is going to happen soon, be ready, you don't want to miss the moment.
Moreover, when we say get your camera ready we don't mean camera without a lens.

1 line is fine. Dpreview are scared to compare 1DX with 4Ds. Canon is prolly aiming to release something capable of replacing 5D3, which imo makes sense since it's already having hard time against 6D.

If it's a new EOS-1 camera, let's hope it doesn't have bad AF like the 1D MK3 or MAJOR, MAJOR problems like in the 1DX. Canon Australia tried to cover up the 1DX problems and even got a lawyer to make blatant lies in small claims court. Give me a car that leaks a bit of oil than a cruddy lemon that breaks down and keeps stopping.

A canon printer that prints on erasable, durable electronic paper at last. With some help from out-of-work materials scientists poached from Kodak.

Or a lovely new photocopier marketed to Home User enthusiasts happy to give the voluminous unit some prime real estate in their bedrooms and to show it off to their friends and family.

Or a printer range with higher unit price while selling the ink for a fifth of the price of their nearest competitor. All the while massively reducing the amount of tossed printers that end up in landfill worldwide once people find out how expensive they are to run versus buying new.

Any of these would make me get my camera out...
