Population
Our population statistics cover age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, migration, ancestry, language use, veterans, as well as population estimates and projections.
This section provides information on a range of educational topics, from educational attainment and school enrollment to school districts, costs and financing.
Our statistics highlight trends in household and family composition, describe characteristics of the residents of housing units, and show how they are related.
Health statistics on insurance coverage, disability, fertility and other health issues are increasingly important in measuring the nation's overall well-being.
We measure the housing and
construction industry, track homeownership rates, and produce
statistics on the physical and financial characteristics of
our homes.

Headquarters and NPC Employment Opportunities
Below you will see five major jobs that are critical to the mission of the Bureau. You can select one of those five for information on specific job summaries, qualifications and application information. You will also see links to other employment opportunities available at Census.
When applying to these mission critical positions, please keep the following in mind:
ALL entry-level, mission critical positions are open on an ongoing basis, meaning they have no closing dates.
Statistician, Mathematical Statistician, and IT Specialist applications are sent electronically to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
OPM will review the application and supporting documents to determine whether you qualify for the position applied for, and they also determine which grade levels you are eligible for within that position. This process can take up to 14 business days.
After your application has been reviewed, OPM will then send you a Notice of Results specifying the outcome of your application review and positions in which you are qualified for. Please keep in mind that the Notice of Results does not mean that you have been selected for a position, it simply means that (if eligible) you are active in our selection pool.
Managers select applicants based on their needs. When a manager expresses the need to fill a position, a certificate of eligibles (list of best qualified candidates) is issued by OPM from the pool of active candidates. Candidates selected from the applicant pool must be within reach on the OPM issued certificate before a selection can be made. “Within reach” means the candidate must be one of the top 3 candidates on the certificate.
The Human Resources Division will contact you only if you are selected for a position.
Keep in mind that the applications for the Statistician and IT Specialist positions are active for 3 months; the Mathematical Statistician applications are active for 9 months.
If your application expires, you will no longer be active in our system unless you re-apply. To avoid this you can send a fax to OPM using the required cover sheet, which can be found at http://staffing.opm.gov/pdf/usascover.pdf [10.41 KB] requesting an extension of your eligibility. However, this must be done at least 2 weeks prior to your expiration date. The request should be sent directly to OPM via fax at 1-478-757-3144. Keeping your application active will keep you available to managers for selection from our applicant pool.
