Transformers: Age of Extinction concept art of unused Transformers

4 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Prior to the production of Transformers: Age of Extinction, there was a deal in place between Paramount and motor vehicle company Polaris for them to create Transformers based off their machines. These would have included ATVs, snowmobiles etc. For whatever reason, the deal didn’t go through and the characters were scrapped.

Michael Hirtz (via Cbm) has now shared some of his concepts for what those Transformers would have looked like. They also write, “he informs us that these robots would’ve been relatively small as compared to the normal-sized Transformers. Somewhere around 8-10ft max, based on the types of vehicles Polaris manufactures. Hritz’s designs also do a great job of incorporating the look of Polaris’ vehicles by ‘exposing shocks and linkages, using roll-cages and vehicle structure, aggressive/colorful forms floating over blacked-out mechanical parts.’”

Dialogues: Talking Robots; or Michael Bay's "Transformers: Age of Extinction"

7 hours ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Last year Notebook failed to cover what ended up being one of our favorite films of 2013, Michael Bay's Pain & Gain. Upon the release of his latest movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, we henceforth resume our perhaps morbid fascination with the American director. Previous Notebook writings on Bay include Ryland Walker Knight on the second Transformers movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Daniel Kasman and Fernando F. Croce each on the franchise's third film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), three critics' three takes on Bad Boys II (2003), and Uncas Blythe's monstrous overview of the cinema of Michael Bay.

The following conversation between Adam Cook and Daniel Kasman took place over email.

Adam Cook: How do we watch Transformers

We know what we're getting into with a Michael Bay film, and in particular the fourth installment of this blockbuster series. We're familiar with the pitfalls, the vapidity, the ideological murkiness, »

Transformers: Age of Extinction breaks Chinese box office records

12 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It’s been top of the Us box office for two weeks and it looks to be taking the crown from Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie when it’s officially released here in the UK this Friday, but it looks like Transformers: Age of Extinction has broken new ground in China already, knocking Avatar from its box office record spot.

The film has grossed RMB740 million ($119.8 million) in its opening week to combine with the RMB628 million ($101.7 million) it took in its opening weekend. That gives Transformers: Age of Extinction a 10-day total of RMB1.37 billion ($221.9 million).

Avatar‘s has held the box office record since its release in 2009. The press release given to Flickering Myth also states that the Chinese currency is appreciated more, which means it has made more dollars per Rmb than James Cameron’s movie.

Paramount are yet to confirm these figures.

The movie has also way-surpassed its predecessor, »

The Flickering Myth Podcast – Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

The Flickering Myth Podcast is more than meets the eye….

Perhaps the most critic proof franchise in the history of cinema is back with a bang as Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction has landed! The movie has made nearly $600 million worldwide in around 10 days which is a staggering achievement, but what did our writers think?

In what is perhaps our most hotly-debated podcast in recent memory, Flickering Myth co-editor Luke Owen is joined by staff writers Amon Warmann, Anthony Stokes, Rohan Morbey and Scott Davis to discuss Transformers: Age of Extinction – what was good, what was bad, laughing at product placement and the “Bayhem” and asking why there was a joke about statutory rape in a movie made to sell toys for children.

Warning – this podcast contains strong language, strong opinions and some spoilers.

Transformers: Age of Extinction hits $575 million worldwide

6 July 2014 11:44 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like X-Men: Days of Future Past is on borrowed time as the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, with Michael Bay’s latest Transformers: Age of Extinction shaking off a mauling from critics [read our ★ reviews here, here and here] to hit $575 million at the worldwide box office just 12 days after it starting rolling out across the globe. By close of play this weekend, the fourth instalment in the Transformers franchise will be sitting on $175 domestically, with a further $400 million from international markets.

All this is despite a delayed release schedule across Europe and Latin America (it came out here in the UK just yesterday), and is due in no small part to its terrific performance in China, where it’s made $212 million alone so far. At this rate, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Age of Extinction hitting Transformers: Dark of the Moon numbers, with the third movie currently the highest »

Movie Review – Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

6 July 2014 4:11 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Transformers: Age of Extinction, 2014.

Directed by Michael Bay.

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Victoria Summer, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Titus Welliver and Li Bingbing and featuring the voice talents of Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, John Goodman, Ken Watanabe and Mark Ryan.

Synopsis:

An automobile mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down the Autobots – and a paranoid government official – on them.

During my screening of Transformers: Age Of Extinction I could hear a man a few rows away from me talking out loud. I looked over and saw he was telling the kid behind him to stop kicking his chair; the kid didn’t hear him at first so he spoke a bit loud and the message was understood. It dawned on me at this point that this brief dialogue between two strangers had captivated my attention in a way the action on screen had failed »

Watch this brilliant Transformers stop-motion animation

6 July 2014 3:28 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Not happy with Michael Bay’s latest interpretation of The Transformers? Then you may find a bit more joy in this 4-minute stop-motion animation from Harris Loureiro which sees Optimus Prime take on the Constructicons and Devastator. It’s pretty awesome.

According to Loureiro, he shot the short in September last year and then started the edit in May 2014, which took him around a month. Some impressive work for just a month of editing!

The short is very reminiscent for those who loved the 1986 The Transformers: The Movie as it features classic Vince Dicola scoring and Stan Bush’s iconic The Touch.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is currently out in North America and is released in the UK on July 5th, with a cast that includes Mark Whalberg (Pain & Gain), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did), Nicola Peltz (Bates Motel), Stanley Tucci (Captain America: The First Avenger), Li Bingbing (Resident Evil: Retribution »

Transformers: Age of Extinction Review

5 July 2014 4:38 PM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

The fourth go around for Michael Bay's Transformers franchise, Age of Extinction is a soft reboot for the series, jumping off from the events of the last movies balls to the wall finale, but clearing everything else off the table. It allows Bay to come at the franchise in a different direction, this installment being much darker in tone than what has come previous. That's all that really has changed though, with everything else we have come to expect from the franchise intact. Five years after Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers are a known entity, on the run and hunted by the U.S Government for the lives lost during the battle of Chicago. When inventor Cade Yaeger (Mark Wahlberg, sporting the best character name this side of the Eighties) comes across a battered old truck which turns out to be Autobot leader Optimus Prime, it puts himself, »

Michael Bay responds again to critics who didn’t like Transformers: Age of Extinction

4 July 2014 1:11 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Earlier this week, Michael Bay spoke out about critics who didn’t like this latest blockbuster Transformers: Age of Extinction, which has been panned by almost every critic under the sun. In the interview, Bay essestinally said, “haters gonna hate”. While promoting the film in Dublin ahead of its release tomorrow here in the UK, Michael Bay once again called out the critics.

“I work as hard as I can and I’m glad that people are liking the movie besides the critics, let’s just forget the critics,” he said, adding that “the people in the audience are liking the movies – that’s what I make movies for.”

Bay also thinks “critics only screenings” should be changed saying, “I think that they should make it mandatory for reviewers that they sit in the audiences – just be themselves surrounded by a real audience”.

Transformers: Age of Extinction Review

3 July 2014 10:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Picking up four years after the Battle of Chicago in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction sees amateur robotics inventor Cade Yaeger (Mark Wahlberg) discovering Optimus Prime (voiced superbly once more by Peter Cullen) while searching for junk to refurbish. The gravely wounded Autobot commander has been in hiding from a covert black ops team led by Harold Attlinger (Kelsey Grammer), who has teamed up with Cybertronian bounty hunter Lockdown (voiced by Mark Ryan) in a bid to destroy all shape-shifting robots. Meanwhile, tech tycoon and billionaire inventor Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci) is busy reverse-engineering his own Transformers with a view to having an army of robots under human control.

If that was all the story Age of Extinction was concerned with, the final product would not only be mercifully shorter – at 165 minutes, it’s the longest instalment of the series – it would make for a much better watch. »

Transformers: Age of Extinction review - Cinematic Stockholm Syndrome

Transformers: Age of Extinction is rolling out across cinemas this month, and the sequel has already racked up more than $300 million at the worldwide box office.

But where does the franchise go from here? Director Michael Bay admitted that the latest Transformers sets up "a whole bunch of scenarios where we can really broaden the franchise", and the door is left open to explore the outer space origins of the Autobots and Decepticons.

2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of the series' beloved animated outing The Transformers: The Movie, but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura doesn't believe Transformers 5 will be able to make that landmark date.
