State Archives

The State Archives, located at the Kansas Historical Society headquarters in west Topeka, offers a convenient research facility to delve into Kansas history and the West. People interested in genealogy, community history, house history, and other general aspects of Kansas history can find here a wealth of information.  

Many resources are available to help prepare for a research visit, including maps, a list of holdings by topic, information about the microfilm collection, and other guides and finding aids.

  • March - October: 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday
  • November - February: 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday - Saturday
  • Closed state holidays
  • No entrance fee
  • ADA accessible, ADA accessible parking in rear, wheelchairs available

Public transportation

  • Through Topeka Transit
  • Via #5 West 6th or #7 Huntoon purple routes, Social Security stop
  • Requires walking and service is limited

  • Schedule guided tours at least two weeks in advance

  • Four different loops through prairie and wooded areas
