'Guardians of the Galaxy' Obliterates August Record

"We Are Groot."Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ruled the box office this weekend with a fantastic $94 million. That's easily the biggest debut ever for an August release; the previous record holder, The Bourne Ultimatum, opened to $69.3 million in 2007.Meanwhile, James Brown biopic Get On Up took third place with a modest $14 million debut. This weekend reversed the box office slump in a big way: the top 12 earned $172.6 million, which is up a whopping 40 percent from the same frame last year. With a packed line-up of major releases coming up, this August is almost certainly going to be the biggest one ever.Among recent Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy's opening is nearly on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, and is noticeably higher than Thor: The Dark World's $85.7 million. That's pretty remarkable considering the Guardians were unknown to most moviegoers a year ago, and »

Weekend Report (cont.): 'Transformers' Joins $1 Billion Club

3 August 2014 10:29 AM, PDT

<< Continued from "Weekend Report"In second place, Lucy fell 58 percent to an estimated $18.3 million. That's a rough drop, though it's not horrible given the movie's mixed word-of-mouth and tough competition from Guardians. To date, Lucy has earned $79.6 million, and remains on track for over $110 million total.James Brown biopic Get On Up opened to an estimated $14 million this weekend. That's a bit above Jersey Boys ($13.3 million), but is around half of the opening of star Chadwick Boseman's last biopic (42, $27.5 million). It's also significantly lower than director Tate Taylor's last movie, The Help ($35.9 million in five days). With good reviews and strong word-of-mouth ("A" CinemaScore), Get on Up should hold up well in the next month: a final total north of $50 million is likely.Hercules plummeted 64 percent to $10.7 million this weekend. To date, the movie has earned $52.3 million, and is on pace to wrap up somewhere between $70 and $80 million. »

Friday Report: 'Guardians' Stuns with $37.8 Million Opening Day

2 August 2014 9:10 AM, PDT

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy opened to a fantastic $37.8 million on Friday. Remarkably, that's more than recent Marvel sequels Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World earned on their first days out.Among the biggest 2014 releases, Guardians wound up a bit behind Transformers: Age of Extinction and Godzilla. More so than for those movies, the Guardians audience rushed out on Thursday night: nearly 30 percent of the Friday gross was earned on the previous day.In one respect, the high Thursday share suggests that the weekend will be fairly front-loaded. However, the Guardians marketing campaign has attempted to position the movie as family-friendly entertainment; if that strategy pays off, the movie should have an above-average hold on Saturday. It also has strong word-of-mouth ("A" CinemaScore) and great reviews (92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), though it's unclear exactly how much that's going to help.A three-day weekend in the $92 to »

July Box Office Falls Short of $1 Billion... >

1 August 2014 5:01 PM, PDT

The final results are in for the month of July, and they aren't pretty.Domestic box office revenues totaled $966 million, which is down a massive 30 percent from last July. This also marks the first time since 2002 that the month of July fell short of $1 billion. The 30 percent year-to-year decline is the steepest drop in Box Office Mojo's database, which dates back to the early 1980s. The only rival is January 2011, which was off 29 percent (thanks in no small part to Avatar's impact on January 2010).What explains this historic decline? Simply put, it can be chalked up to an abnormally weak lineup of movies that weren't appealing enough to get people in to theaters. Nothing performed on par with Despicable Me 2, The Dark Knight Rises or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and nothing was expected to, either. Moviegoers aren't just going to show up out of habit*there »

Forecast: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' To Take Off With August Record... >

31 July 2014 4:50 PM, PDT

Friday Am Update: Could Guardians of the Galaxy open to $100 million this weekend? Based on late Thursday earnings, this is actually within the realm of possibilities. The 10th movie from Marvel Studios earned a stunning $11.2 million from Thursday night showings beginning at 7 p.m. That's the biggest Thursday night debut so far this year ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($10.2 million). It's also way ahead of June's Transformers: Age of Extinction ($8.75 million), which is the only movie to open over $100 million this year.If Guardians of the Galaxy follows the same pattern as either of those movies*or of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past*it will score the biggest opening weekend of the year.Of course, there's a chance that it's more front-loaded than those movies. Shows began early (7 p.m.), and everyone is out of school (which wasn't the case with the April and May releases). Also, »
