Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)- Action | Adventure | Comedy | Fantasy | Sci-Fi

The Buzz: This is the second weekend in a row that a crew of comic-book outsiders will storm the box office with a wave of goodwill behind them; the difference here being the heavy fanboy tax previously levied against this Michael Bay-produced reboot has been mostly replaced by cautious enthusiasm. Why? The trailers have delivered and, like Guardians of the Galaxy, both kids and adults clutching their Michelangelo toys should exit the theater desirous of a repeat viewing.
The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)- Drama
The Kadam family clashes with Madame Mallory, proprietress of a celebrated French restaurant, after they open their own nearby eatery, until undeniable chemistry causes the Madame to take gifted young chef Hassan under her wing.
Director:Lasse Hallström |

The Buzz: Comfort-film specialist Lasse Hallstrom working with dark-toned screenwriter Steven Knight is a somewhat odd pairing (though Knight did just write a chef-y project for Bradley Cooper) but this literary adaptation has been crafted to soothe audiences around the world for the next couple months. A two-tiered romance that features Helen Mirren and Om Puri putting aside cultural differences is the kind of movie that should play well wherever it open and might see ... wow, we really cannot avoid a food metaphor ... people return for second helpings.
Into the Storm (2014)- Action | Thriller
Storm trackers, thrill-seekers, and everyday townspeople document an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes touching down in the town of Silverton.
Director:Steven Quale |

The Buzz: When he's not wearing his Thorin hair and make up, do you recognize Richard Armitage? He's one of those actors who can so disappear into a character that I'm sure he'll anchor this effects-heavy thriller as he plays a father and teacher trying to save his son, students, and fellow townspeople during a mounting and unprecedented disaster. And the presence of former "Walking Dead" lingering presence Sarah Wayne Callies ensures a rabid at-home audience too.
Step Up All In (2014)- Drama | Music | Romance
All-stars from the previous Step Up installments come together in glittering Las Vegas, battling for a victory that could define their dreams and their careers.
Director:Trish Sie |

The Buzz: The leggiest thing about this franchise is that none of its installments have gone direct to video. The oddest? Every new chapter has made less money than its predecessor in the U.S.. The last two releases have made $100+ overseas and that's the main reason this reunion will be the Fast & Furious entry (minus Tyler and Nora), opening up future possibilities.
What If (2013)- Comedy | Drama | Romance
Wallace, who is burned out from a string of failed relationships, forms an instant bond with Chantry, who lives with her longtime boyfriend. Together, they puzzle out what it means if your best friend is also the love of your life.
Director:Michael Dowse |

The Buzz: Beyond the appearance of Adam Driver, the "Girls" stamp is all over this romantic comedy that seems to be rife with questionable behavior from probably-not-all-that likeable characters, which, if true, is a waste of Danielle Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan's combined charm. Even the character names (Wallace and Chantry) are rather arch. Maybe it's time for Ms. Kazan to get another one of her screenplays into production?
The Dog (2013) - [Limited]- Documentary
A documentary portrait of the late John Wojtowicz, whose attempted robbery of a Brooklyn bank to finance his male lover's sex-reassignment surgery was the real-life inspiration for Dog Day Afternoon (1975).

The Buzz: The true stories of John Wojtowicz are more complex than the classic film made about his most famous exploit - the botched 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery that turned into a police standoff with hostages. Co-directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren spent a decade crafting their film on Wojtowicz's life, which technically came to an end in 2006 but endures thanks to his associations with all things 1970s New York.
About Alex (2014) - [Limited]- Drama
When a group of old college friends reunite over a long weekend after one of them attempts suicide, old crushes and resentments shine light on their life decisions, and ultimately push friendships and relationships to the brink.
Director:Jesse Zwick |

The Buzz: If you want to see a handful of children of famous actors do the sad-college reunion thing, this is your dramedy. It's so Millennial there's even a character named "Siri."
Deepsea Challenge 3D (2014) - [Limited]- Documentary
A 3D documentary chronicling filmmaker James Cameron's diving expeditions in his Deepsea Challenger submarine.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: James Cameron fulfills his boyhood/Steve Zissou dreams by traveling to uncharted depths of the Pacific Ocean with his own special 3D cameras trailing his every move. Cue up your Abyss jokes and wish that Werner Herzog was brought on board to do some voiceover work.
