Box Office: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Astounds With $160.4 Mil Global Debut

8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“The Guardians of the Galaxy” touched down with a dazzling $94 million this weekend, proving that Marvel is the new gold standard for movie brands.

That set a new record for an August domestic debut, easily trumping the $69.3 million bow of 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum,” and scoring the third biggest stateside opening of the year. Overseas, the film netted an impressive $66.4 million in 42 territories, including Russia, Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom. It has brought in $160.4 million worldwide and still has many major markets left to open such as China, Australia, France and Spain.

The Walt Disney release blew past tracking that initially suggested a U.S. debut in the $65 million to $70 million range.

“It’s a testament to the momentum of the brand overall and all of the pieces just coming together in the right way,” said Dave Hollis, Walt Disney Studios’ executive vice president of theatrical distribution.

‘Ghostbusters:’ Not Just For Old, White Guys

Commentary:   My self-described Neanderthal colleague decried Sony‘s reboot of Ghostbusters using female actors as a way to ruin a good remake, but last I checked, we don’t live in the 1950s anymore. What does sex matter? I mean, come on, Mike, it’s time to stand upright and dust off your knuckles, if there’s any skin left on them. When I told Mike I was going to write this, he asked, “You mean you’re going to bitch-slap me?” He also told me to go “pro gal.” I feel like Dolly Parton working with Dabney Coleman in 9 to 5. Studio Ghibli Announces Closing on Japanese TV

51 minutes ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Sadly, early reports that one of the world's most beloved animation studios, Hayao Miyazaki's legendary Studio Ghibli, might shut its doors and stop making films, are true. A news report translation of Studio Ghibli general manager and Toshio Suzuki's TV announcement of the closure has been posted on the Studio Ghibli blog. Suzuki says the Studio Ghibli animation production department will be dismantled. (Toh! ranked the Top Ten Studio Ghibli films here.) Ghibli's newest film, "When Marnie Was There," opened in Japan on July 19.  Whispers of the studio's closing have circulated since last year, when powerhouse writer-director Miyazaki (of "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away" fame) announced he was retiring and Ghibli producer/co-founder Suzuki stepped down from producing and became the studio's general manager instead. So Studio Ghibli will now focus on not making new films but rather on managing its copyrights and trademarks and »

The Films of Andrew Dominik: An Introduction

56 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Andrew Dominik is sort of an enigma.  He doesn’t self promote.  He doesn’t suffer fools.  Some people find him rude, while others regard him as honest and matter-of-fact.  He doesn’t give canned answers to journalists. He’s not a pushover in the studio environment.  He’s successfully positioned himself so that when you think of him, you think of his work.  In a professional context I’ve spoken to him several times at length on the phone or via email (this was some time ago, I was an assistant to one of his reps between June and December of 2007) and he’s still a mystery to me in many ways.  When someone mentions him, my mind almost never moves to a memory or recollection those days.  Instead, I immediately go to the final half hour of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and »

Rachel Brosnahan and Ashley Zukerman Talk Manhattan, Joining the Series, What Will Surprise You about the Show, & Humanity behind the History

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

What happens if you round up the nation's most brilliant scientific minds, seclude them in a makeshift city in the middle of the desert, and drown their lives in secrecy?  These are the questions addressed in Manhattan, the new historical drama from creator Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex) and director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing).  Manhattan offers a semi-fictionalized version of the infamous Manhattan Project - the clandestine research and development project that resulted in the creation of the atomic bomb.  While the events of the show are based on history, Manhattan largely steers clear of iconic figures like J.  Robert Oppenheimer and Leslie Groves, and focuses instead on the interpersonal drama between fictitious characters as they contend with the costs of secrecy and isolation. I recently visited the set in Santa Fe, New Mexico where the labs, homes, and barracks of Los Alamos have been recreated from the ground up. »

Note To Paul Feig: Take A Lesson From The All-Femme ‘Odd Couple’

It seemed like a great idea at the time, which was 1984, right in the heart of the Age of Second-Wave Feminism: Recast the greatest guy-comedy of all time, Neil Simon‘s The Odd Couple, not only with a female Oscar and Felix, but with their hard-drinking, crotch-scratching, stogie-smoking, moldy-sandwich-scarfing, deodorant-and-English-challenged poker pals all played by birds as well. Box Office Top Ten: What Marvel's 'Guardians' of the Galaxy' Opening Means, Can 'Get On Up' Cross Over?

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Marvel continues to rule the Hollywood roost. Origin myth "Guardians of the Galaxy" yet again shows the power of Marvel's unified vision of a comic-book universe whose characters inhabit a clearly defined and immersive world. Like "Iron Man," these Guardians are less widely known than Thor, the Hulk or Captain America. Even so, "Guardians" performed at the same level as Marvel's other summer films, and in August! That marks Marvel's most impressive achievement this year. Clearly, audiences are searching for something different than the pablum the studios are feeding them. And "Guardians" wound up with critical raves far above the norm for a tentpole/international-appeal movie. (See Top Ten Chart below.) Coming in at $94 million, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is the sixth film of the year to open at over $90 million, four of which were Marvel properties. Marvel's brand domination and product cred are rare in »

Read Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn's Heartfelt Thank You Letter To Fans

2 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

This weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy pulled off something rather spectacular. After years of being considered an extreme gamble and weeks of box office estimates pinning it at making under $70 million for its first three days, the film soared above expectations and managed to create a mini (for now) phenomenon. Critics adore it, audiences are loving it (an A-level CinemaScore has been measured)... and at the center of it all is one filmmaker who is feeling incredibly blessed. I am, of course, referring to James Gunn - the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy. A first time blockbuster filmmaker (having never worked on a production with a budget higher than $15 million), Gunn was given the opportunity by Marvel Studios to express a real creative vision, and he succeeded in wholly unexpected ways. People have responded to the movie in a huge and passionate way, and now it's creator »

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Leads Foreign Box Office, ‘Apes’ Still Swinging

Guardians of the Galaxy” dominated the international box office this weekend, powered by the global strength of the Marvel brand.

The space adventure blasted off with $66.4 million in 43 territories, including Russia, where the film bowed to $13 million, the United Kingdom with a $10.8 million debut and Mexico, where the picture premiered to $6.5 million.

“Overseas, this film is playing more like a sequel than an original,” said Dave Hollis, Walt Disney Studios’ executive vice president of theatrical distribution.

He argued that the picture is performing in line with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Thor: The Dark World,” and outpacing the first films in those series.

“Guardians'” territory count represents 50% of the international footprint and excludes a number of major markets, including Australia, where it opens next weekend, France, where it bows in two weeks, and Japan, where it will be unveiled on Sept. 13.  The film has also been accepted into China, »

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Obliterates August Record

3 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

"We Are Groot."Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ruled the box office this weekend with a fantastic $94 million. That's easily the biggest debut ever for an August release; the previous record holder, The Bourne Ultimatum, opened to $69.3 million in 2007.Meanwhile, James Brown biopic Get On Up took third place with a modest $14 million debut. This weekend reversed the box office slump in a big way: the top 12 earned $172.6 million, which is up a whopping 40 percent from the same frame last year. With a packed line-up of major releases coming up, this August is almost certainly going to be the biggest one ever.Among recent Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy's opening is nearly on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, and is noticeably higher than Thor: The Dark World's $85.7 million. That's pretty remarkable considering the Guardians were unknown to most moviegoers a year ago, and »

The Tribe wins top prize in Motovun

The Tribe, which has no spoken dialogue only sign language without subtitles, is about a boy who discovers illegal goings-on at a boarding school for the deaf. It premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week where it won the Nespresso Grand Prize, the France 4 Visionary Award and the Gan Foundation Support for Distribution Award.

The Propeller award was bestowed by a “jury in exile,” comprised of people who live in exile, are under house arrest or are unable to be in Motovun because they are not free to travel. Why ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ May Be Marvel’s Most Important Movie

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Guardians of the Galaxy” may be the most important film in Marvel Studios’ history.

Its $94 million domestic debut this weekend astounded box office prognosticators who were predicting an opening in the $65 million to $70 million range, and demonstrated that the company has figured out a way to push second-tier superheroes to perform like A-list brands. Prior to last Friday, most moviegoers would have struggled to pick Drax the Destroyer out of a lineup.

With all due respect to leading man Chris Pratt and director James Gunn, who are being justifiably hailed for injecting a dose of irreverence and energy into a summer blockbuster season that was ponderous and inert, Marvel is the star of this particular big-screen adventure.

“It underlines the fact that people trust their entire product line,” said Shawn Robbins, assistant editor of BoxOffice.com. “It’s becoming what Pixar became for Disney a few years back. Five years ago, »

Transformers: Age of Extinction hits $1 billion worldwide

4 hours ago | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Transformers: Age of Extinction has hit $1 billion (£594m) in the worldwide ticket sales.

The latest instalment of Michael Bay's blockbuster series becomes the first film of 2014 to reach the milestone.

The success of the film - which stars Mark Wahlberg and Kelsey Grammer - is largely due to its international performance. It became the first film to take $300m (£178m) at the Chinese box office, and has performed strongly in other territories.

It has taken $241.2m (£143m) to date at the domestic box office, which is a low for the franchise.

Paramount chairman and CEO, Brad Grey, said of the film's achievement: "Time and again, Michael has delivered pictures that audiences around the globe truly love.

"Along with the immensely talented and versatile Mark Wahlberg, the great Steven Spielberg as executive producer, and a superb cast, he created a powerful relaunch of this franchise.

Specialty Box Office: 'Calvary' Opens Soft, 'Boyhood' and 'A Most Wanted Man' Expand Well, 'Wish I Was Here' Another Focus Flop

5 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

January's Sundance Film Festival lineup continues to open this summer --with often lackluster results. Ten of the 13 films in current release are hitting theaters in advance of the torrent of new titles soon to hit fall film festivals. (One exception is "Whiplash," which Sony Pictures Classics is continuing to play on the fest circuit, presumably with an eye on ultimate awards payoff.)  Fox Searchlight's "Calvary" opened below expectations in its first theaters, given stellar reviews and TV ad support. "Boyhood" remains the standout as it quickly expands to over 300 screens, showing significant success with a promise of more ahead. Roadside Attraction's "A Most Wanted Man," starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, also widened with strong results. (It's one of three recent films to emerge with best actor contenders, along with Brendan Gleeson of "Calvary" and Chadwick Boseman of "Get On Up.") By contrast, »

Watch: David Tennant & Rosamund Pike Show 'What We Did On Our Holiday' In New Trailer

Your summer vacation time may be ending with school, work and responsibilities on the horizon, but there is still one more way you can get away — with the latest trailer for the Brit-com “We We Did On Our Holiday.” The movie looks like a rosier, and more English version of “Little Miss Sunshine,” but shame on me for pigeonholing it too soon. Starring former "Doctor Who" David Tennant, upcoming "Gone Girl" star Rosamund Pike and Billy Connolly, the story follows a couple and their three kids who head for the Scottish Highlands for a grandfather's birthday, all while trying to keep a secret from the rest of the family. But as they'll soon learn, its the children who could let the cat out of the bag. The film opens on September 26th in the UK, with no word on U.S. distribution at this point. [Digital Spy] »
