Opening This Week - July 25

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure

Metascore: 54/100 (8 reviews)
Having endured his legendary twelve labors, Hercules, the Greek demigod, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.

The Buzz: The Brett Ratner factor is the alienating element here, but Dwayne Johnson leading an army that looks similar to Daenerys Targaryen's might be enough to defeat hack filmmaking. The Rock is the closest thing Hollywood has to a male movie star (his movies grossed $1.3 billion last year) so the biggest labor here is surpassing box-office expectations, which is always a challenge with the sword-and-sandals genre. Johnson and company might look overseas for their greatest victories.

Certificate R   -   Action | Sci-Fi

Metascore: 59/100 (34 reviews)
A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

The Buzz: Luc Besson amps up Scarlett Johansson's super-heroine appeal with a story that smacks a bit of Leeloo if you allow yourself to hope for such a thing.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

A comedy concert film that captures the on-stage performance and inspirational success story of Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias.

The Buzz: We love it when comedians who are considered niche entertainers by some but are really mainstream players have break-through successes on the big or small screen. So please make your mark this weekend with your jean shorts and comfy sneakers, Fluffy.

  -   Action | Comedy | Romance | Thriller

An adrenaline junkie walks away from a whirlwind romance and embraces a new life as a thief, though he soon finds himself pursued by veteran police officer and engaged in a turf war with a local gangster.

The Buzz: There's a chance that Salman Khan's return to the big screen might crack the U.S. top 10 this weekend since it's close to the Eid al Fitr holiday, and there's reportedly an extra long car-chase as this thriller's centerpiece sequence.

The Buzz: Any metaphor that concerns itself with Emma Stone's divine magnificence is a yarn we want to follow.

Certificate R   -   Thriller

Metascore: 74/100 (35 reviews)
A Chechen Muslim illegally immigrates to Hamburg, where he gets caught in the international war on terror.

The Buzz: We are comforted by the fact that one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's last roles is in this adaptation of John le Carré's novel from director Anton Corbijn, who may have stumbled with The American but has Control to his credit and Life coming out next year (with Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan).

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy | Drama | Romance

Metascore: 40/100 (22 reviews)
A self-centered realtor enlists the help of his neighbor when he's suddenly left in charge of the granddaughter he never knew existed until his estranged son drops her off at his home.

The Buzz: We're not quite sure what changed for Rob Reiner as a director since The Bucket List is his lone triumph since the early-to-mid 1990s. His family focus isn't even attracting that audience (Flipped and The Magic of Belle Isle made $2 million at the box office combined). Would it be against his beliefs to really earn a PG-13 rating at this point in his career? Remember that Stand by Me was rated R.

Certificate R   -   Drama

Metascore: 34/100 (9 reviews)
Two New York City girls make a pact to lose their virginity during their first summer out of high school. When they both fall for the same street artist, the friends find their connection tested for the first time.
Director:

The Buzz: We're quite interested in seeing if this story distinguishes itself from dozens of other soundalike films because its author and director is Naomi Foner, the Oscar-nominated mother of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 68/100 (15 reviews)
After a break up, Jenny moves in with writer Kelly, her filmmaker husband, and their child. Despite a rocky start, Jenny's influence helps Kelly realize that an evolution in her life, career and relationship is necessary for her happiness.

The Buzz: Joe Swanberg makes filmmaking seem easy (he's made 17 features since 2005) so it was no surprise to see him quickly build on the momentum generated by his last movie, Drinking Buddies, by re-teaming with Buddies co-star Anna Kendrick. Beyond the fact that Lena Dunham has a supporting role, we can't help but wonder if this is Swanberg's version of "Girls."

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Two married friends employ a single playboy to help them get their mojo back to save their marriages.

The Buzz: Makes sense that Tika Sumpter is the woman to straighten out all the dudes in this romantic comedy since her real-life career is so on track of late, too.
