Scarlett Johansson‘s “Lucy” pummeled “Hercules” and Dwayne Johnson in a box-office battle of the action heroes and sexes, taking in a muscular $44 million over the weekend. The Rock's “Hercules” did better than expected and wound up with $29 million, to beat out two-time reigning champ “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which finished third with $16.4 million. And one of Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s final films, “A Most Wanted Man,” cracked the top ten in its limited debut. But this weekend belonged to “Lucy,” written, directed and produced by Luc Besson. 18 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

San Diego - "Guardians of the Galaxy" hasn't even opened yet, but Marvel Studios announced  Saturday that a sequel is already green lit. Currently titled "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," the second installment of Marvel's latest franchise will hit theaters on July 28, 2017.  That's three years from now, but make sure you mark your calendar in your smartphone (not that you'll likely still be using that phone three years from now). The revelation was made during a taped comedic bit featuring franchise star Chris Pratt (Star Lord) and director James Gunn that played during Marvel's annual Saturday Comic-Con panel.  The duo recorded the announcement while doing press in London this past week. "Guardians" may turn out to be one of Marvel's most critically acclaimed films. It's currently at a 77 on Metacritic and a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 25 reviews so far. 14 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

San Diego - You thought you were disappointed about director Edgar Wright's departure from "Ant-Man"? Try being Paul Rudd. "Well, it's been...it was pretty bumpy for sure," said the actor of Wright's exit while promoting the film (in which he stars as second Ant-Man Scott Lang) at San Diego Comic-Con. "I'm really sad about it. Edgar's brilliant, and Edgar brought me on. Edgar's my friend. I mean, I still talk to Edgar just about every day, almost." So, after losing a director and several castmates (including Patrick Wilson, who reportedly dropped out due to a scheduling conflict), what's there to feel good about? "[The film has] opened up and grown in such a new and exciting way," said Rudd of the new creative direction. "And I also know [new director] Peyton [Reed], and Peyton is a really smart, really passionate visionary when it comes to this kind of stuff. He's a comic book fan, »

Quentin Tarantino says 'The Hateful Eight' is on the way after all

19 minutes ago | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Quentin Tarantino’s post-Civil War western The Hateful Eight will be a film after all.

After Gawker leaked pages from The Hateful Eight screenplay back in January, Tarantino filed a lawsuit against the media company and said he wouldn’t be turning the script into a movie because of the leak. He later amended that statement though, telling a crowd at a The Hateful Eight reading in April that he was actually working on new draft of the script. And Sunday, he announced at a Comic-Con panel that the movie is a go, Deadline reports.

“Godzilla” roared in Japan this weekend, with the monster picture topping box office charts.

The film debuted to an estimated $6.9 million across 27 screens. The  opening is on par with “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which grossed $54.2 million in Japan, and more than double that of “Pacific Rim,” which went on to make $14.5 million in the country.

It was a home-coming for the scaly beast. The Legendary Entertainment release was distributed by Toho in Japan, the company behind the original Godzilla movie. The distributor and exhibitor is enjoying the strongest year in its history, putting up a record first half box office of $365 million.

Warner Bros. handled the international rollout for the other territories. So far, “Godzilla” has earned $498.3 million worldwide.

Writer and director George Miller began the dystopian action franchise with the original Mel Gibson installment in 1979, followed closely by Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome in 1985. He reportedly hit a wall while trying to concoct the fourth chapter, but finally found his bearings on the story a decade ago and began shooting all the way back in 2012.

‘The Originals’ Star Sebastian Roche Will Hunt You Down and Rip Out Your Heart (Video)

When it comes to the CW vampire drama “The Originals,” there's vengeance, and then there's the kind of vengeance that Sebastian Roche's character — Mikael — dishes out: The kind that rips people's hearts right out of their chests. But that's just one aspect of Mikael's upcoming journey in season two of the show, which will return this October. Roche stopped by TheWrap's Comic-Con video lounge at the “Walking Dead Escape” in Petco Park to tell Greg Gilman about that heart-ripping scene, and offer some friendly advice to the zombiefied reporter. After live-blogs for "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Following," it's time for the final Hall H panel of Comic-Con 2014. It's Guillermo del Toro and company taking the stage for FX's "The Strain," which will be preceded by a screening on Sunday (July 27) night's episode, which was one of my favorites so far, featuring some jaw-droopingly gross moments, as well as a hilarious sequence for Corey Stoll's wig. Apparently this is the first TV show ever to be paneled in Hall H during its first season. Who knew? Click through for the highlights... 2:37 p.m. Panel time! Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan are introducing our panelists: Ben Hyland, Jack Kesey, Miguel Gomez, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Kevin Durand, Sean Astin (or "The adorable, cuddly Sean Astin," as Guillermo introduces him),  David Bradley ("He's open for wedding planning if you need anything," del Toro jokes), Mia Maestro and Corey Stoll. »

Top Ten Box Office Takeaways, as Action Star Scarlett Johannson in 'Lucy' Lays Out The Rock in 'Hercules'

1 hour ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Two new openings led by Number One Grosser "Lucy" stood out among this weekend's Top 10 grosses. But this fresh new blood wasn't enough to staunch the overall ongoing box office bleeding. The leading films grossed around $130 million, another significant shortfall ($22 million) from the same time last year. The year to date total now is almost 7% below 2013, and even worse, behind every year since 2008. Adding to these concerns, both of the top two films ("Hercules" came in second) fell Saturday from their opening day totals, suggesting neither will hold any better than most of the summer's top films. This remains one of the biggest factors in overall box office decline, along with a lack of repeat business.  Top 10 Grosses: 1. "Lucy" (Universal) New - Cinemascore: C-; Criticwire: B-; Metacritic: 60; Est. production budget: $40 million     $44,025,000 in 3,173 theaters; PSA (per screen average): $13,875; »

Comic-Con 2014: Why 'The Giver' is like 'Tron: Legacy' and 'John Carter'

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Is it too late? The Weinstein Co. took over a half-full Hall H to promote the latest young adult dystopian fantasy "The Giver." It's been a long time coming to the screen, as 19 years ago producer-star Jeff Bridges originally intended to make a family film featuring his father Lloyd as the title character that he wound up playing himself--that is not dissimilar to the eminence grise role he played in "Tron" sequel "Legacy." "I'm so glad that Weinstein and Walden got the courage to put it out," Bridges told Hall H.  What took so long? Well, the film world was not ready for the controversial novel published in 1983, which inspired and fed later dystopian fiction, including the "Hunger Games" and "Divergent" series. Ironically, their success smoothed the way for their progenitor to get made. (It opens in theaters August 15.) While Lois Lowry's provocative Newbery-winning book has been a staple in schools and. »

'Lucy' Wins Brain vs. Brawn Battle This Weekend

2 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Scarlett Johansson easily out-muscled Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the final weekend of a very weak month at the box office. In another big win for Universal Pictures, Lucy took first place with over $44 million. Meanwhile, Hercules had to settle for runner-up with a lukewarm $29 million debut.Overall, the Top 12 earned an estimated $134.6 million this weekend; that's down 15 percent from the same frame last year.Lucy's opening weekend didn't quite match similar movies like Wanted ($50.9 million) or Taken 2 ($49.5 million). The fact that it even came close, though, is a fairly remarkable feat for this moderately-budgeted original action movie. Among other similar titles, it crushed The Bourne Legacy ($38.1 million) and Salt ($36 million). It's also the fourth Universal Pictures release to open north of $35 million this year; the other three are Lone Survivor, Ride Along and Neighbors. This is even more impressive considering all four titles are "original" (i.e. »
