The Buzz: An entity from a far corner of the Marvel universe has found itself positioned as the unlikely hero of the flailing summer box office; even the people behind Honest Trailers seemed to think Guardians might be Marvel's Green Lantern. Thinking of Guardians as a champion in this way seems like a classic case of Internet goodwill, but we see the movie more as Marvel's potential cult classic. Troma veteran James Gunn is the director after all, and we love the his unexpected path through Hollywood has brought him to this point. Let's remember that Guardians is a standalone Marvel movie with no ties to its previous films or more recognizable characters. That's a tough sell to a wide audience. In fact, our colleague Ray Subers at Box Office Mojo has already wondered if Guardians is this year's Pacific Rim - an instance of online hype outweighing general interest. Personally, GOTG looks like a Marvel-take on a TV show we miss quite a bit: "Farscape." And that's more than enough to get us to see the movie in theaters.
Get on Up (2014)Biography | Drama | Music

Director:Tate Taylor |

The Buzz: Sometimes we feel burnt out on artist biopics, then we watch a trailer like this one and we're a screaming fan again. Though it might be hard to get an honest, warts-and-all drama made about the entirety of James Brown's life, it seems Taylor Tate is set to make a clearer stamp as a director with live-performance scenes and stronger flourishes than anything we saw in The Help, and it's good to see star Chadwick Boseman break out of sport-drama mode after back-to-back appearances in 42 and Draft Day.
Calvary (2014)- Drama
After he is threatened during a confession, a good-natured priest must battle the dark forces closing in around him.
Director:John Michael McDonagh |
|

The Buzz: Brendan Gleeson also starred in writer John Michael McDonagh directorial debut, The Guard, a rare instance of a deftly handled crime/comedy that earned Gleeson a Golden Globe nomination and proved that some screenwriters really can get behind the camera and direct, too. Calvary might seem a bit serious and grave on its surface but I understand McDonagh has layered in plenty of black comedy as well, though critical response has been a bit more divided than it was for The Guard. We're surprised the film In Bruges isn't being used to help promote the movie since Gleeson co-starred in that excellent crime story that was written directed by Martin McDonagh, John Michael's brother. It's also worth knowing that Gleeson was drinking with McDonagh when he conceived this story at a pub in Galway.
What If (2013)- Comedy | Drama | Romance
Medical school dropout Wallace has been repeatedly burned by bad relationships. He meets Chantry, an animator who lives with her longtime boyfriend Ben, and they form an instant connection, striking up a close friendship. Still, there is no denying the chemistry between them, leading the pair to wonder, what if the love of your life is actually your best friend?
Director:Michael Dowse |

The Buzz: Beyond the appearance of Adam Driver, the "Girls" stamp is all over this romantic comedy that seems to be rife with questionable behavior from probably-not-all-that likeable characters, which, if true, is a waste of Danielle Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan's combined charm. Even the character names are rather arch.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)Action | Adventure | Comedy | Fantasy | Sci-Fi
Four mutant warriors fight to save their city from an evil kingpin.
Director:Jonathan Liebesman |
|
Watch Trailer Get Tickets |
The Buzz: Director Jonathan Liebesman has his detractors after following up Battle Los Angeles (2011) with Wrath of the Titans (2012), and the fanboy tax levied on this remake is two-fold: Michael Bay is producing it. Part of us died when William Fichtner was announced as The Shredder, and we're rather amazed that, as of late summer 2013, there hasn't been a peek at even the roughest production art/character designs.
The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)- Drama

Step Up All In (2014)- Drama | Music | Romance
All-stars from the previous Step Up installments come together in glittering Las Vegas, battling for a victory that could define their dreams and their careers.
Director:Trish Sie |

The Buzz: The coolest thing about this franchise is that none of the installments have gone direct to video. The oddest? Every new chapter has made less money than its predecessor in the U.S. The last two have made $100+ overseas and that's the main reason this reunion will be the Fast & Furious entry, opening up future possibilities.
About Alex (2014)- Drama
'About Alex' is the story of seven college friends who reunite over a three-day weekend, after one of them attempts suicide. When the friends get together to keep an eye on Alex, the weekend that ensues will renew old crushes and resentments, shine light on bad decisions, and ultimately push friendships and relationships to the brink as the group tries to speculate when the simple life of their college years turned so muddy and complex. Sometimes irreverent, sometimes poetic, and always moving, About Alex is a searingly honest look at the changing nature of adult friendship in the Facebook/Twitter generation.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)Action | Crime | Thriller
The town's most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The sobering thing about Sin City 2 is to realize that pretty much every cast member's career has hit the skids. So let's hope the sequel is worth the staggering delay and that better roles are on the horizon for Clive Owen, et al. I'd push for special screenings of both films back-to-back.

Returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident, Jessabelle comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return -- and has no intention of letting her escape.
Director:Kevin Greutert |
|

The Buzz: Together, Saw franchise vet Kevin Greutert and producer Jason Blum (partially responsible for Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister), make a micro-budget horror dream team. The curious quotient here is the screenwriting hand of former "Reno 911"er Robert Ben Garant, one of our favorite comic deviants who ventures into the world of horror for the first time.
As Above, So Below (2014)Horror | Thriller
A thriller centered on two archaeologists in search of a lost treasure in the catacombs below Paris.
