Book Description

6 May 2014
“A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.”

The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion—it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance.

It was there that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees. Sophia’s never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.

#GIRLBOSS includes Sophia’s story, yet is infinitely bigger than Sophia. It’s deeply personal yet universal. Filled with brazen wake-up calls (“You are not a special snowflake”), cunning and frank observations (“Failure is your invention”), and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal’s meteoric rise, #GIRLBOSS covers a lot of ground. It proves that being successful isn’t about how popular you were in high school or where you went to college (if you went to college). Rather, success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break.

A #GIRLBOSS takes her life seriously without taking herself too seriously. She takes chances and takes responsibility on her own terms. . She knows when to throw punches and when to roll with them. When to button up and when to let her freak flag fly.

As Sophia writes, “I have three pieces of advice I want you to remember: Don’t ever grow up. Don’t become a bore. Don’t let The Man get to you. OK? Cool.  Then let’s do this.”

PRAISE FOR SOPHIA AMORUSO

“The Cinderella of tech.”
--New York Times

“Fashion’s new phenom.”
--Forbes

“Starkly brilliant.”
--Huffington Post

“[Sophia Amoruso] remains true to her vision to inspire and be inspired by cool girls.”
--Elle’s “One to Watch: 11 Women Who Just Might Change the World”

“Nasty Gal clothing company—as red hot as its founder’s lipstick...even though owner Sophia Amoruso never set a spike-heeled boot in business school…[It’s growth] would be hugely impressive for any 6-year-old start-up. But Amoruso isn’t your typical entrepreneur…Amoruso is, employees say, the ultimate nasty gal…In a predominantly male tech industry, Amoruso is gaining notice for being a young female CEO who is doing things her way.”
--The LA Times

“There are some CEOs that can make running a company look ridiculously easy. Then there are some who can do it with, well, a certain je ne sais quoi. Sexiness is a subjective measure and its not just about looks. It’s also about success, power, ambition, charisma, altruism, fashion sense, and style.”
--Business Insider on Naming Sophia Amoruso “The Sexiest CEO Alive”

“Sophia Amoruso is building a fashion empire.”
--New York’s The Cut

“It is her fundamental vision and commitment to an authentic sense of style that has resonated so strongly.”
--elitedaily.com on “Why Sophia Amoruso is the Sexiest and Smartest CEO.”

“The Female Tech Superstar”
--addicted2success.com

“[Sophia Amoruso] began as a humble Ebay Store and turned her brand into one of the most coveted eCommerce destinations on the planet…Sophia’s brand sticks up its middle finger at the corporate world and NastyGal’s loyal followers can’t get enough of it.”
--begoodclothes.com

“She doesn’t just offer [millenials] clothes—she offers them the whole ‘rebel’ lifestyle.”
--Sarah Owen, WGSN

“Sophia Amoruso is pretty awesome.”
--styleite.com

“[Sophia Amoruso] is every bit as uncommon as [Nasty Gal’s] track record. Never mind the Valley’s history of funding misfits like stinky fruitarian Steve Jobs, junk food smacking Marc Andreesen, or socially awkward Mark Zuckerberg. Those misfits all fit in a similar box. Amoruso did not. . . .[Nasty Gal] is that gap between total dork and together, rich cheerleader where the bulk of girls who want to think for themselves but also be cool and accepted live.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Memorable Storytelling + Heartfelt Advice 14 May 2014
By T. Hagan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I first heard Sophia was writing #GIRLBOSS, I honestly thought, "Yeah, you're an intriguing person, but it seems a little early to write an advice book." After reading it, I believe Sophia wrote the book now for a couple of reasons. One, just to put into words how astonished she is at what she has learned and what she has accomplished. Two, she actually had a s*** ton of advice from some crazy work experiences and business decisions that she really wanted to pass on.

#GIRLBOSS tackles some of the contradictions people face in their professional and personal lives - buckle down and work hard but don't give in to "The Man," be considerate to customers and talk to the shy person hanging out in the corner but don't be afraid to fire people in a straight-forward way, eschew over-priced fashion must-haves while wearing Yves Saint Laurent platforms, ignore traditional business mindsets but educate yourself to make smart business decisions.

It's hard to navigate these types of contradictions, but Sophia's blend of a strong, irreverent voice mixed with heartfelt concern and well wishes for readers allows her to give advice in a straight-forward and humorous manner without coming across as preachy.

On one hand, I feel like the book targets younger readers, such as recent high school and college graduates, but even as a 30 year old professional, I found #GIRLBOSS a refreshing, entertaining read among the sea of dry personal development books and business reads. #GIRLBOSS gives me hope that tomorrow's generation of business leaders will approach their professional journeys with a surer footing of who they are and a relentless tenacity to match.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all aspiring entrepreneurs! 6 May 2014
By Mane and Chic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was so excited for the release of this book. I bought the Kindle version of this book the day it was available on Amazon. It took me about 2 hours to read it and I loved every minute of it. If you're a #GirlBoss and you know it in the depths of your soul, you MUST READ this book. It's real, it's raw, rife with wisdom, and worth every penny. It will certainly give you that extra kick in the bootay that you need to fearlessly make moves like a boss.

Sophia is a "baddie" and I can't think of a more relateable CEO of a $100 Million-plus-company to teach a crash course in entrepreneurship. That's what this book felt like to me.

I can't wait to start applying some of her tips, tactics, advice, and lessons (or whatever you want to call it) into action.

Let's go! Let's GET IT, Ladies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real. Raw. And NASTY. 6 May 2014

Sophia blew me away with this book (read: I read the entire book in one night -- more like 4 hours without putting it down). Her blunt honesty made me giggle, feel empowered, excited, and most of all, like damn, I need to get my s*** together and go do some work.

So now, that's what I'm going to do. Thank you Sophia for being nasty!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Read for this Generation 26 May 2014
By Elizabeth Caruso - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
While #GIRLBOSS is largely promoted as an autobiographical account of Amoruso's rise from a small Ebay store to Nasty Gal as it is today, the book is so much more than that. It's a comforting hug, a reassuring, "You're awesome, you can achieve whatever the hell you want," while simultaneously kicking you in the ass to actually get to work.

Amoruso's narratives are divided into chapters with themes - for example, her sordid past as a shoplifter, or "how s***ty jobs saved her life," included with (of course!) the entire history of Nasty Gal from small Ebay beginnings. For wannabe Nasty Gal employees, she even divulges some get-hired advice. Ultimately, the take-away from each chapter is nearly the same. It's immediately apparent that Sophia is an authentically hard-working person, who didn't come into anything by "luck." She got to where she is today by being unafraid to make mistakes, but always learning from those mistakes. Every day she plugged away, faced whatever new challenges arose, and learned all that she needed to along the way. Hers is a tale that proves "the straight and narrow" path in life is not necessary for all. With enough hard work, sweat, and tears, you can make something amazing for yourself. It's not easy. But is it worth it? Absolutely.

Throughout each chapter, #GIRLBOSS is a reminder to love what you're doing and work like hell each day. And if you don't love what you're doing? Well, you're probably meant for something else, but never stop working, or experimenting. Always find ways to be creative & love every job you do. And be patient; success doesn't happen right away. Always let your authenticity ring through your entire persona: in what clothes you wear, in the work that you put out, in the choices that you make. Think positive, compete with only yourself, and no one else. Sophia cleverly defines these things as the #GIRLBOSS attitude from page one, and lets her #GIRLBOSS shine through in every paragraph.

Long story short: Amoruso's first book is a highly recommended short read (2-3 hours estimate), especially great for young adults, or anyone who wants to walk away feeling empowered, with a fire under their ass to get s*** done.
