Opening This Week - July 11

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Drama | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Metascore: 79/100 (45 reviews)
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

The Buzz: What to love: motion-cappin' Andy Serkis playing off an even better cast the preceding film. What to question: Matt Reeves being swapped into the director's chair over Rupert Wyatt. Not a surprise but certainly a bummer. What to wish: James Franco farewell!

The Buzz: Richard Linklater is firmly back in independent-filmmaking territory and enjoying both warm welcomes and surprise hits. His unique latest project might find itself included in the parentheses that refer to his work from here on (next to Slacker and Dazed and Confused).

Certificate R   -   Adventure | Comedy

Metascore: 68/100 (20 reviews)
A pair of former brothers-in-law embark on a road trip through Iceland.

The Buzz: Co-writers/directors Aaron Katz and Martha Stephens have earned acclaim for crafting a story about getting older that allows their adventure-seeking duo to share thoughtful, sober, and existential moments -- as well as some vulgar times, too. No wonder we keep thinking it's a documentary. Note that co-star Earl Lynn Nelson is related to co-director Stephens, who put the story idea in motion when she thought of what it would be like to travel to Iceland with Nelson.

Metascore: 32/100 (19 reviews)
Four people meet on New Year's Eve and form a surrogate family to help one another weather the difficulties of their lives.

The Buzz: Save the U.S. remake of Fever Pitch, Nick Hornby novels usually make for successful adaptations, but this suicide-pact dramedy from director Pascal Chaumeil (whose Heartbreaker is a delight) might join the shallow pile of failures. When you look at the cast, it's hard to rectify how savage the reviews have been.
