The Turkish and Iraqi governments are working on a plan to open two new border crossings between the two countries, Turkish Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim said Wednesday.
Officials of the two countries discussed the plan at Iraqi Transportation Minister Amir Abd al-Jabar Ismail's visit to Turkey, Yildirim said.
He said Turkish and Iraqi diplomats were also talking on the matter, adding the Iraqi government welcomed the project.
Habur border crossing can not meet the needs of the increasing level of transportation between Turkey and Iraq, Yildirim said.
Trade volume between the two countries reached nearly $5 billion in 2008. Turkey seeks ways to double that figure by the year 2010. |
