The Bourne Identity: the battle to make the first film

It was the spy thriller that revitalised the genre. But the production of 2002’s The Bourne Identity was far from an easy one...

Like so many budding filmmakers of his generation, Doug Liman got his start in movies by fiddling with his father's Super 8 camera. Then aged eight, Liman "Picked it up, started making movies with it, and never stopped."

By the time he'd reached his early 30s, Liman's ambitions had finally paid off. His films Swingers and Go, released in 1996 and 1999, were made cheaply and recouped healthy profits. Urgent and effervescently told, they were the product of a young, talented filmmaker on the rise. Liman's rising profile soon saw him land the kind of deal that a few dozen other hopefuls would have sold their souls for - Universal signed him up to make a film based on Robert Ludlum's spy thriller, The Bourne Identity. »

17 movie sequels that are stuck in development hell

Meet the films sequels that might not be dead, but are certainly stuck in some kind of limbo...

Every now and then, a sequel that appears to have been in the cooker for a while – Zoolander 2, Dumb And Dumber To, Anchorman 2 – finally escapes into the wild. But the journey to the screen can be a very lengthy one, and this little lot are still trying to find their way to your local multiplex…

Dick Tracy 2

Disney gambled hard on bringing Dick Tracy to the screen in the summer of 1990, backing the vision of director and star Warren Beatty, and hoping to ape the success that Warner Bros had enjoyed the summer before with Batman. Yet whilst Dick Tracy hit, it didn’t hit too hard. The studio adjusted its-then blockbuster strategy accordingly, and it wouldn’t really be until it got to the likes of »

Avatar: The Franchise That Keeps on Spawning

Tony Black on James Cameron’s ever-expanding Avatar series…

James Cameron just won’t let this go, will he? Having spent the last decade almost in development and finally pre-production on a sequel to Avatar, his 2009 3D science-fiction epic which remains the most lucrative film ever made (only second even to Gone With the Wind, adjusted for inflation) what then expanded to three sequels making up a trilogy has now expanded to four, a quadrilogy, all of which presumably will shoot simultaneously and leave Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and co. effectively locked up for surely a couple of years reacting to green screen (to which Twitter reacted wonderfully, incidentally). Who’s to say Cameron will stop at four? Before now and the start of filming, this could spawn the Avatar Extended Universe the way the self-professed ‘King of the World’ is going. The strange thing about the Avatar sequels is »

Does Disney’s ‘Jungle Book’ Success Spell Trouble for Warner Bros. Version?

17 April 2016 1:29 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In the battle between the two “Jungle Book” movies, Disney appears to have the upper hand.

The studio just enjoyed a massive $103.6 million opening weekend for its live-action update of its 1967 animated classic and is already hard at work on a sequel that would bring back director Jon Favreau and focus on more of Mowgli’s adventures. Warner Bros. won’t counter with its own version of the Rudyard Kipling tales until 2018, 30 months after the Disney version took multiplexes by storm.

Warner Bros. has to be really concerned,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “It could spell disaster.”

The history of competing studio projects with similar story lines is nearly as old as the movie business itself. Think of how 1938’s “Jezebel” and 1939’s “Gone With the Wind” pitted two scheming Southern belles (Bette Davis and Vivian Leigh) against each other, or when 1964’s “Dr. Strangelove” and the »

‘Extraction’ DVD Review

13 March 2016 7:58 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Bruce Willis, Kellan Lutz, Gina Carano, D.B. Sweeney, Joshua Mikel, Steve Coulter, Dan Bilzerian, Heather Johansen, Roman Mitichyan, Christopher Rob Bowen, Rob Steinberg, Lydia Hull, Tyler Jon Olson | Written by Max Adams, Umair Aleem | Directed by Steven C. Miller

I have a love/hate relationship with Bruce Willis these days. On the one hand he stars in films I love such as the Red, G.I. Joe and The Expendables; and on the other he appears in direct to market dross like The Prince, Set-Up and Vice. Now don’t get me wrong, some of the direct to DVD titles Willis has appeared in are pretty good, Fire With Fire for example, but he’s been batting way below average on the Dtv front recently.

Extraction sees a ruthless terrorist group kidnap retired spy Leonard Turner (Bruce Willis; GI Joe: Retaliation, Die Hard, Armageddon), and threaten to unleash a »

What Happens in the Bunker Stays in the Bunker: People Reviews the Delightfully Insane 10 Cloverfield Lane

11 March 2016 8:50 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

If it's a kidnapping, it's an odd one, as Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) awakens from a car accident to discover that she's tethered to an IV in her arm and a cinder-block wall at her leg. But then, everything about the underground bunker at 10 Cloverfield Lane is a little off. There are movies on DVD and VHS, board games to pass the time, a fully stocked kitchen, and Michelle is soon free to walk around as she pleases. She just can't leave. A cinematic cousin of 2008's Cloverfield (also produced by J.J. Abrams), 10 Cloverfield Lane is creepy and campy all at once. »

A photo posted by Liv Tyler (@misslivalittle) on Mar 7, 2016 at 6:23am Pst Throwback Thursday came a little early for Liv Tyler, who took to Instagram on Monday to share an adorable snap of herself with Ben Affleck on the set of Armageddon back in 1998. The actress, who is currently pregnant with her third child, posted a photo of Ben playfully kissing her head with the caption, "Ohhh Monday." In case you forgot, Liv and Ben played couple Grace and A.J. in the science-fiction film, which also featured the iconic theme song "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" performed by Liv's dad, Steven Tyler, and his band Aerosmith. Even though Ben's former onscreen love had nice things to say about him, a couple of his real-life exes haven't been as complimentary. John Travolta Lives Life On The Line In New Trailer For High-Wire Thriller

24 February 2016 10:00 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Voltage Pictures has premiered a new trailer for high-wire thriller Life on the Line, starring John Travolta as a blue-collar worker risking life and limb to restore downed power lines across the country.

Described as one the most dangerous occupations out there, the subject matter wouldn’t look out of place in a straight-to-tv documentary, though director David Hackl has moulded a story around the employment regardless. It’s a dated one, too, with Travolta on board to play Beau, a grizzled veteran who reluctantly takes newcomer Devon Sawa under his wing.

In his time dealing with power outages and unforgiving storms, Beau has witnessed his fair share of tragedies. Plus, the fact that he acts as a surrogate father to Kate Bosworth’s character, a potential love interest to Sawa’s maverick, evokes a romantic subplot not dissimilar to Michael Bay’s Armageddon – only with decidedly less AerosmithSharon Stone, »

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi review: “Bay’s best”

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi review: Michael Bay tells the true life story of the 2012 attack on a U.S. compound – and it’s actually pretty good. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi review

It would be quite easy to dismiss Michael Bay‘s latest effort after the damp squibs that were the overblown Pain & Gain, most, if not all of the Transformers movies and, not forgetting, the awful Pearl Harbor – but 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi could just be his best film – yes, better than The Rock and Armageddon.

Okay, so we’re not measuring this up against much, as Bay has not had the best of luck when it comes to critical reception, but his films have grossed a combined amount of $5.7 billion worldwide. With 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, Bay tells a true story about a group of six ex-miltary operatives who find themselves »

Michael Bay brings a true story to the big screen in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi. Here's our review...

This is a true story,” Michael Bay tells us via one of those military telex-style captions at the start of 13 Hours. Then he blows a lot of stuff up. It’s a misreading of the supposed impact of letting the viewer know they’re witnessing an account of true events. The point is that you then deliver something remarkable, stranger than fiction, leaving us shaking our heads in wonder that this really happened. But I can easily wrap my head around the premise that, in a collapsed Middle Eastern state with no government, overrun by mercenaries and Islamist extremists, a fair bit of stuff might get blown up. As early as the opening captions, Michael Bay has failed.

Some context: I think Michael Bay is great when »

Nasa's 'Planetary Defense Office' Is Now an Actual Place You Can Work

Too late for Michael Bay to pivot into government? Nasa has announced the establishment of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, which is set up to defend Earth from asteroids, comets and presumably, should the need arise, aliens? Unclear. The office, which includes the incredibly named position of "Planetary Defense Officer," operates out of D.C., and is primarily concerned with the early detection of potentially hazardous objects (PHOs), which are asteroids and comets of a certain size (98 to 164 feet) that get within a certain range of Earth (.05 Astronomical Units, or about 93 million miles »

‘No Escape’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Owen Wilson, Lake Bell, Pierce Brosnan, Thanawut Kasro, Chatchawai Kamonsakpitak | Written by John Erick Dowdle, Drew Dowdle | Directed by John Erick Dowdle

No Escape starts out with Jack and Annie Dwyer (Wilson & Bell) and their two daughters emigrating to an unspecified Southeast Asian country for Wilson’s work. This work is somehow connected to the country’s water supply and it’s hinted that the company may have had some shady dealings in the past. This notion becomes somewhat inconsequential when violent revolutionaries seize power from the government and beginning tearing through the city, killing any foreigners they find. This makes life difficult for the young family as they’re staying at the richest, most foreigner-friendly hotel in town…

Owen Wilson might seem like an unlikely action hero, but there was a time when he looked primed to become America’s next golden-haired champion of good and kicking ass. »
