The Kansas Historical Society preserves several different collections related to Kansas history. These collections include archeology and ethnographic, audio visual, documents, historic sites, manuscripts, maps, National Register nominations, objects, and photographs. Many of these collections are available to research onsite at the State Archives. Other collections are available by appointment. State Archives - specializing in family history, community history, or history of the West, with a convenient research facility open to the public with extensive collections. Located in west Topeka.

Museum collection - representing a broad scope of Kansas history, not open to the public, but available to research through prior appointment. Collection highlights include agriculture, transportation, communication, and Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War including battle flags.

Archeology collection - one of the largest and most comprehensive material cultural collections from the Kansas region as it documents more than 10,000 years of human occupation in the central plains. The collection is available to research through prior appointment.

Historic preservation - records related to several historic preservation programs. Some of these records are available online, others are available by appointment.
