Narragansett Beer From 'Jaws' Is Back And Ready For Your Cooler This Summer

21 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We're not sure what your plans are this holiday weekend, but as far as movies go, there's not better occasion than to throw on the blockbuster that started them all — "Jaws." Steven Spielberg's beach terror masterpiece still stands as one of the great summer movies, and now you can take your enjoyment to the next level. Narragansett Beer have brought back the 1975 design featured in "Jaws," so too can feel like Captain Sam Quint squinting over the horizon. The beer company has a few other plans for the summer months, including "supporting shark conservation efforts in the Atlantic Ocean and giving ‘Gansett fans a chance to name and track an adopted shark!" But mostly, they just want you to #CrushItLikeQuint. And yes, that is an actual hashtag. Check out the retro poster below and get ready to drink like a battle scarred captain facing down the greatest terror he's even seen. »

New Photos & International DVD Art For David Cronenberg’s ‘Map To The Stars’

56 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Even though the Cannes Film Festival described David Cronenberg’s “Maps To The Stars” as a satire of Hollywood a la Robert Altman’s “The Player,” the filmmaker has a less ironic view of the material. “This is not a satire, I’m really just observing,” Cronenberg told Total Film recently. “I feel like a scientist or a researcher. That's the most honest, neutral way of looking at things. I'm not angry at Hollywood. I don't have a statement to make about Hollywood." While there’s no official U.S. release date for the film yet (it’s a good bet that it’ll be at the Toronto International Film Festival and then get a North American debut after that), internationally things are a bit different. The film is already out in France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, the Netherlands and more are getting the film in late September (it’s »

Rumor: 4 More Villains Added To 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice'

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Well, our morning got started today with the first official look at Henry Cavill as Superman in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice." Dude is throwing some serious attitude in the rain, as Zack Snyder's film looks to be turning the dial up on Gritty, Tough and Filled With Weather. But maybe Clark Kent has a reason to be looking serious—if these rumors are true, Gotham will be overrun with some bad dudes. The folks over at Latino Review are reporting that, in addition to Lex Luthor, there will be four more villains appearing in some capacity in the super sequel. And since this writer has no idea who any of these characters are, I'm just gonna list them with the basic Wikia entry to give you an idea of where these folks fit into the Batman/Superman world: Victor Szazs: Victor Zsasz (referred to as Zsasz or Mr. »

Watch: 'Dead Poets Society' Pals Ethan Hawke & Robert Sean Leonard Go To New York For An Audition In 10-Min Clip

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Holy hell, has it really been twenty-five years since everyone stood up triumphantly on their desks saying "O captain! My captain!" and we all cried when Neil committed suicide in "Dead Poets Society"? Time really flies, but here's a capsule from the era that's well worth looking at for fans of the movie. Moviemaker Magazine has dug up a really vintage and interesting piece of footage circa filming of Peter Weir's movie. A travelogue of sorts, it finds Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Dylan Kussman, Josh Charles, Gale Hansen, James Waterston and Allelon Ruggiero heading into New York City, where they were all (except two of them) auditioning for the forgotten Ted Danson/Jack Lemmon vehicle "Dad" (Hawke would eventually win the role, fyi). And it's a travelogue of sorts, of a bunch of very young, rising actors hanging out together and having the time of their lives. “Allelon Ruggiero »

Before Borat There Was Christo: Watch Sacha Baron Cohen's 1990s Albanian Reporter

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It’s been eight years since Sacha Baron Cohen broke through into the mainstream with “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” and though Cohen hasn’t reached the same level of success on his own since, there’s something to be said for the lasting mark the character has left in American pop culture. As the actor gears up to shoot the action comedy “Grimsby,” now’s the time to take a look back at how the character of “Borat” came to be. Big thanks to Open Culture for pointing us to a pair of video excerpts from BBC Two’s long-since departed “Comedy Nation” that showcase Borat’s predecessor, Christo. The two characters are virtually the same, the only difference being that Christo is from Albania instead of Kazakhstan. The two videos show Christo infiltrating the upper class society of Britain and venturing »

Johnny Ma at the Sundance Directors Lab, Part 2

3 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

[Johnny Ma's first blog post can be found here.] The day after the Sundance Labs ended, a group of fellows, advisers, and Sundance staff all walked off the plane together at Lax. Instinctively, we kept close to each other as we edged toward baggage claim, as if trying to stay together a little longer before the real world pulled us apart. It felt strangely like reaching land after using sea legs for so long, but the big discovery being that the sea is actually our natural habitat. Walking through the airport, we couldn’t help but look around at the faces […] »

Watch: Jessica Alba Goes Crazy In New Clip From 'Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For' Plus New Pics

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Even though everyone is already getting ready to wind down and enjoy America's birthday this weekend, movie studios are banking that there will still be some people spending time online, hence a recent batch of new images and clips from upcoming films. And so it goes today. Hold off on that run to the story for beer and hot dogs, as another snippet from "Sin City: Dame To Kill For" has arrived. Yep, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are bringing more pulp sleaze to the big screen this summer, in the follow up to the groundbreaking "Sin City," and characters new and old will be appearing. Among them is Jessica Alba's stripper Nancy, who seems to be taking a bigger role this time around, and in this sequence she's going a bit crazy, chopping off her hair. The trademark style is here but it all seems a bit... wheezy. »

Exclusive: Take A Risk With Clip From Everest Documentary 'Beyond The Edge'

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If you're in one of those places right now that's getting beaten down with the summer heat, the upcoming documentary "Beyond The Edge" might be a good visual cool-down. It will take you to the chilly heights of Mount Everest, all in 3D, and telling you the true story of one of the greatest expeditions to one of the world's most notorious peaks. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set out to conquer the 29,000 foot world wonder in order to become the first men to put their feet on the top of Everest. And director Leanne Pooley re-enacts this tale, mixing contemporary and archival footage, recordings, vintage interviews and much more, to present a portrait of the historic climb. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, Hillary and Norgay's journey was a treacherous one, with risks and dangers facing them almost every step of the way. "Beyond The Edge" opens on Friday, »

New Images From Kristen Stewart's Guantanamo Bay Drama 'Camp X-Ray'

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While the franchise "Snow White & The Huntsman" appears to be moving on without her, Kristen Stewart appears to be less interested in that kind of stuff anyway. She recently hit Cannes with Olivier Assayas' "Clouds Of Sils Maria," she spent last month shooting "American Ultra" with Jesse Eisenberg, and has the drama "Still Alice" coming as well. And in case you forgot, she kicked off the year at Sundance with "Camp X-Ray," and some new images from the film have arrived. The movie is written and directed by Peter Sattler, features Payman Maadi, Lane Garrison, J.J. Soria and John Carroll Lynch, and follows the relationship that emerges between a Guantanamo Bay detainee and a young female guard. We didn't get a chance to see the movie in Park City, but reviews were mixed, however, Stewart did get good notices for her performance. IFC Films has U.S. rights for this one, »

Watch: Lars von Trier Short 'Why Try To Escape From Which You Know You Can’t Escape From? Because You Are A Coward!'

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We’ve come to the conclusion that Lars von Trier has always been a little bit off compared to the average person, even in his formative years. The short film von Trier made when he was 11 remains the safest entry in his entire filmography and it ends with a Danish word that definitely has a different meaning and connotation in English, an unintentional language and culture gap that perversely predicts the Danish director’s affinity for assaulting his audience’s good taste. With “The Nymphomaniac” hitting Blu-ray next week, let’s head back to the internet’s time machine and look at what else the Danish enfant terrible was up to when he was just a youth. The eagle eyes over at Dangerous Minds have found another early von Trier short, this time made when the director was 14, a year before this short. Continuing his one-film tradition of long-winded titles, »

'Downfall' Director Oliver Hirschbiegel Helming Hitler Assassination Film & More

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It has been a decade since filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel arrived with "Downfall," with the film meme-generating, critically acclaimed film, instantly putting him on the map. But he's struggled to maintain that success. "The Invasion" saw the director and studio at odds, "Five Minutes In Heaven" was an intimate thriller that didn't catch on, while last year's "Diana" was simply a disaster. So he's returning to WWII for another tale about Hitler. Hirschbiegel is now in production on "George Elser," following the man "from his early years in the Swabian Alps—when National Socialism arrived in his hometown—to his last days at the Dachau concentration camp, where he was killed shortly before the end of the war at the command of the one whom he himself wanted to kill, Hitler." And if there's one reason to be excited for this, it's that Christian Friedel, the lead in Michael Haneke's excellent "The White Ribbon, »

Watch: Cameron Diaz Is Rollergirl In First Clip From 'Sex Tape' Plus New Photos From The Comedy

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

You can't make a sex tape without getting naked, and so it would follow that you can't make a movie called "Sex Tape" without getting naked either, and Cameron Diaz promises that both she and co-star Jason Segel take it off (and probably get it on) in the comedy. "It's a first for me. But Jason gets naked, too. It's just a part of the role. So I did it. I mean you see everything," she told Esquire. And the first clip has arrived from "Sex Tape," and while you won't see everything, Diaz is certainly aiming to turn heads. Directed by Jake Kasdan—who also worked with the two stars on "Bad Teacher"—the film follows a couple whose naughty night of video recording their bedroom antics hits the cloud, and they have to hit the road to figure out how to stop their friends and family from seeing it. »

First Official Image Of Henry Cavill In 'Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice'

7 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Comic-Con is just a few short weeks away so expect a blitz of marketing from “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (God, I still can’t get over how bad of a name that is). Frankly, I was expecting an Entertainment Weekly cover (though that might still be in the works), but instead, since we’ve already had a first look of Ben Affleck in costume as Batman, USA Today had unveiled the first official look at Henry Cavill as Superman (spoiler, he looks a lot like he did in “Man Of Steel”). As you’d probably expect, since it is a Zack Snyder film after all, the photo of Superman this time is dark, gloomy and gritty; the brooding hero standing in the rain at night (maybe like an old Aerosmith video from the ‘90s) probably with a lot on his mind, wrestling with demons or concerned with what »
