Kansas Archeology Training Program (KATP) Field School
The KATP field school, held each June, offers a unique opportunity for members of the public to work alongside professional and avocational archeologists. Participants assist archeologists in surveying for archeological sites, excavating sites, and cleaning/cataloging artifacts in the lab. They learn related techniques in various courses, which may be taken for college credit. The volunteer program was established in 1974 and continues under the joint sponsorship of the Kansas Historical Society (KSHS) and the Kansas Anthropological Association (KAA). Participants may participate in the full two weeks of activities, or may attend as little as a single day. The project fees are quite reasonable, and participants are responsible for their own transportation, food, and lodging expenses. Reports detailing the results of KATP events are published in various archeological publications, including The Kansas Anthropologist. The sponsoring organizations do not discriminate on the basis of disability in admission to, access to, or operation of their programs. Participants must be at least 10 years of age, and those younger than 14 must work with a parent or other sponsoring adult. A legally responsible adult must accompany participants between 14 and 18 years of age.
