Ocean Sampling Day 2014: Capturing marine biodiversity
On 21 June 2014, the first Ocean Sampling Day will take place at over 160 sites spanning Iceland, Antarctica, French Polynesia, the Americas and South Africa. The data collected will be shared publicly via EMBL-EBI’s European Nucleotide Archive and Metagenomics Portal, environmental database PANGAEA, and European portals SeaDataNet and EurOBIS.

Insights into genetics of cleft lip
EMBL scientists have identified how a specific stretch of DNA controls far-off genes to influence the formation of the face. The study, published in Nature Genetics, helps clarify the genetic causes of cleft lip and cleft palate, which are among the most common congenital malformations in humans.
