5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Releases Her Most Solid Work In Years 28 May 2014
By Eric James - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Fans have been waiting for this often-pushed back record for years and won't be disappointed. As Mariah said herself, the album needs to be heard as a body of work rather than based on the radio-friendliness of the singles. It's her most solid work as a whole in a long time. The content ranges from ballads and hip hop numbers to soothing R&B; songs and disco-friendly hits.

I've purchased the Deluxe Version from Target because I need all the songs but I'm buying this version too because you can never have too many Mariah albums!

1. "Cry." The album opens rather unexpectedly with a ballad where most fans are used to hearing an up-tempo song. It's a perfect introduction to the album. It's probably her best vocal on the album and already a fan-favorite. People compare it to "Vision of Love" but it's more restrained and works beautifully. 10/10

2. "Faded" is a mid-tempo R&B; song that people are comparing to "We Belong Together." Although you can hear some similarities in the piano and the final notes, it stands on its own. It's sure to be a new Mariah classic. It could be a good single eventually. 10/10

3. "Dedicated" is what many critics are calling the 90's throw-back track. It does sound like something that could've been on the Daydream album and is always appreciated. I have to admit, this song really grew on me. 10/10

4. "#Beautiful" is Mariah's biggest hit of this decade that nay-sayers "underperformed" which is ridiculous because it sold over a million copies and was the song of the summer. The collaboration with Miguel is, just like the title, beautiful. It really won MC over some new fans and made her prove her relevance almost 25 years after she burst onto the scene. 10/10

5. "Thirsty" is the most Hip Hop song on the record and the strongest contender for another hit single. The usually inspiring lyrics fans are used to hearing from Mariah are replaced by classy attitude a-la "Obsessed." 10/10

6. "Make It Look Good" with its use of harmonica and disco feel is the first really feel-good moment of the album. The Janet Jackson-esque hook is delicious. 10/10

7. "You're Mine (Eternal)" is the single that should've been a much bigger hit. As the album approached release, critics often payed more attention to this track. I think had it been released closer to the release of the album, it would've fared better. But for those of us fans who are eternally loyal, we blasted this song like it was the biggest hit ever. 10/10

8. "You Don't Know What to Do" starts out bluesy with a heartfelt vocal with piano before turning into an updated disco-meets-hip hop song. It's the most fun Mariah has had on a song since "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" in 2008. This is probably my favorite song on the record although I think it may be a bit too out there for radio play, it could still fare well as a single. 10/10

9. "Supernatural" featuring Dembabies is a soothing ballad that actually sounds a little jarring considering the sexy sound interpolated with cooing babies but it's a good song and reminds us what a loving mother Mariah has become. 7/10

10. "Meteorite" is another disco-teque worthy song. The sweeping orchestra and hip hop lyrics make this one of the most festive songs on the record. This is another song that I didn't instantly love until a few more listens and now it's one of my favorites just because it's fun and has the potential to be Mariah's 18th #1 hit on the dance charts. 10/10

11. "Camouflage" sounds like something off of Charmbracelet. The lyrics and vocal are gorgeous even if the song isn't the most memorable. 8/10

12. "Money ($ * / ...)" wasn't available on the original stream of the album so it's the song I've listened to the least. It's another song that brings back a 90's BET vibe. Her vocals are more subdued in a "I Know What You Want" type of way. 8/10

13. "One More Try" is the token cover song on the album that fans always look forward to. I don't think she's ever done a less than stellar remake. This is destined to be another fan favorite because it's classic Mariah. 10/10

14. "Heavenly (No Ways Tired/Can't Give Up Now)" Another ever-present song since "Make It Happen" and "Anytime You Need a Friend" is the gospel-tinged number she often ends her albums with. This is already one of my favorites. The inspiring lyrics, choir and soaring vocal are classic Mariah. 10/10

BONUS TRACKS:

15. "It's a Wrap" wasn't my favorite track on Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (which was also a great album) but it's salvaged from the cancelled Angels Advocate remix project with added vocals from Mary J. Blige. It's great to hear the two divas collaborate even if the song is rather forgettable. 7.5/10

16. "Betcha 'Gon Know" is another song that was planned for release on the Angels Advocate record originally released on Memoirs. This version adds R. Kelly on the vocals. I was worried about turning the song into a duet because it was one of the highlights of her last album but it works out really well. But I have to give it a 9 instead of a 10 because it was already released and was perfect as it was. 9/10

17. "The Art of Letting Go" was a buzz single released at a time when I really needed it. Every time Mariah releases an album, there's a song that touches me personally. "Hero", "Looking In", "Close My Eyes", "Can't Take That Away", "Through the Rain", and "Side Effects" come to mind. Mariah's music has helped me through a lot and in this case, I needed to let go of an abusive relationship and the hopelessness, hurt and anger that stemmed from it. This is one of the most personal songs she's released in years and that's why I have to list it as a standout track. 10/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover #Beautiful, You're Mine (Eternal) 30 May 2014
By Ensaeshah - Published on Amazon.com
Mariah Carey is perhaps one of the most polarizing artist in my recent memory. Spanning a commercial career of almost 25 years I can't think of many artist whose catalog goes from singing what would now be considered adult contemporary pop music to pop/r&b;/hip hop fusion. Its interesting because I appreciate Mariah's artistry in all of its forms. I can see her musical brilliance even in those moments where people are divided on which era of Mariah they'd rather hear. Now, let's get something straight. I don't consider myself a lamb. I was riding with Mariah before this phenomenon of naming your fans ever came into existence. I just love her voice from 1990 until now. Granted there was a period of time around Rainbow that I felt something was off but I'm a fan none the less. With the Elusive Chanteuse, I hear elements of all Mariah's back catalog all on one album.

It opens up with Cry. Which is classic 1990/1991 Mariah. And I must admit, I love that Mariah. Her voice is truly remarkable and make no mistake Mariah can still blow her face off despite whatever challenges vocally she has faced. This song lets me know that Mariah of 1990 is still there but she's moved on with her artistry. Some like it some don't. "Faded" is another gem on the album that fuses the more modern sounds with the carefree vocals that Mariah is known for. Her voice lifts effortlessly on this number. The disco/2step song "You don't know what to do" w/ Wale is a smash waiting to happen. "Supernatural" is a cute song with dembabies that she affectionately calls her kids and I enjoyed hearing them on the song. I got the point of the song with the kids on it. "Meteorite". This is a line dancing song if I ever heard and its excellent. It reminds you of the era of Mariah where she would have a dance/house song on the album, but instead of that sound it sounds like it is straight up out of Chicago or someplace where the shuffle dance came from. As much as I hate parties where there is line dancing, if I heard this song, I would be up doing some line dancing to this song. "Make it look good" classic throwback song with Stevie Wonder on the harmonica. "Camouflage" shows off that range that we all love.

In my opinion, the only misstep on this album and in my opinion quite disappointing is the gospel song at the end. It didn't move me like her other gospel numbers have done in the past. For me I think it was the beat that threw me off. Also, the cover of One More Try wasn't up to par with what I know Mariah can do with a song that is not her own.

An almost excellent cd, despite the lukewarm response to a couple of the songs on the album, but when listened you almost forget that those other songs are there. It's probably safe to say that Mariah's reign is over but not because the music isn't good. There are a number of factors playing here. Age, music taste and styles changing, radio, etc. But I truly believe Mariah has nothing to prove. She is in a lane that she created. Others imitate but there are no duplicates. In fact, I put Mariah in the category of Michael Jackson. Multiple personas, and of course only having to top her last success. I think she knows that and is ok with it. No one can stay on top forever. Its just the nature of the beast in that business. Vocally speaking, I think Mariah still has the chops, albeit a more mature and refined delivery. Mariah has always stated that she is at her best in the studio, so I don't expect her to be perfect during live performance all the time. That isn't where she is great. Whitney Houston was great at that. Mariah is one of the greatest vocalist that also builds and crafts every project that she touches. And when you look at her artistry from that angle you can truly see how brilliant her craft is despite her over the top personas (which I happen to believe is her way of protecting that inner person). Am I a lamb, nah, just a fan who was grandfathered in.

A very welcome and recommended addition to the Mariah catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING RETURN TO FORM - THE VOICE IS BACK! - CONTENDER FOR 2014 ALBUM OF THE YEAR! 27 May 2014
By PourHomme80 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When listening to this gorgeous new album, I cant help but be transported back to a time when Mariah Carey was first starting out and you would hear these powerhouse vocals on the radio or on TV. She took a break from this style of singing in the last decade chasing after fresher beats and muted vocals. I am so glad to report that Mariah focuses on showcasing her lyrical prowess and that vocal magic on this album. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM.

What you get here is a jam packed album of beautiful melodic music from an iconic artist who becomes eligible for the rock n roll hall of fame next year. What you may not be getting is immediately accessible made for radio tracks which I am relieved about. Mariah no longer needs to be recording music for radio to respond to.

To describe this album, lets start with her tradition of doing a cover or two on her albums. My favorite track on the album happens to be one of these covers, the George Michael track "One More Try." For you 80's kids, if you really want some nostalgia, listen to this one immediately. Mariah also dips into disco dance sounds for two tracks and she just sounds right at home. One of them, You Don't Know What To Do, could be 2014's summer dance jam and features Wale while Meteorite is a magical disco house jam which rockets her into exciting new territory.

The balladry is just near perfection on tracks like Cry. and Camouflage while tracks like Thirsty and Dedicated have super fresh urban beats that could easily find a home on today's radio playlists. There really is something for all of her fans of this project all the while maintaining a full project experience.

Here's my breakdown of the album GEMS:

1 One More Try - Stunning emotional balladry makes this all her own. This could be a giant international hit for her. / I hope to see this released as a single.
2 Cry. - This haunting, emotive ballad feels like it comes from the "Butterfly" era. Her vocals are at their most powerful and this is going to go down as a major Mariah fan favorite. This may not be the type of track she should release as a single but this wiill be the "Petals" and "Close My Eyes" of this album.
3 Meteorite - Q-tip produces this spacey, disco jam and her voice is just sheer magic on this out of the box dance track. Send this to the clubs ASAP.
4 You Don't Know What To Do - This seems like it is going to be a single based on Mariah performing it live during her album promotion. With its highly addicting chorus, this could potentially be a big summer dance jam if promoted properly and embraced by radio.
5 Camouflage - heartbreaking, emotional and highly dramatic with vocals, piano and some background vocals. Just beautiful.
6 Heavenly - A powerful, uplifting anthem with choir and all and a perfect album closer.
7 #Beautiful - This became a top 20 hit on the Hot 100 in the summer of 2013 but it's highly disappointing this track didn't do any better. I firmly believe it is because the featured artist is so prominent on the track. This should have been a Mariah only track. Nonetheless, it fits perfectly on the album.

The Good Stuff:
1 Dedicated - Think 90's Mariah in the vein of "Always be my baby" or something from the "Daydream" album with minimal guesting from Nas.
2 Faded - seems to borrow heavily from her monster hit "We Belong Together" in structure but doesn't quite hit the mark for me. This is the whispery Mariah vocals of the 2000's that ends with a bang.
3 Thirsty - bound to be a single. Very addictive beat and chorus. Think "Migrate," "Its Like That." This may in fact be one of the only US radio friendly singles on this album. While I would love to hear any of the tracks on radio, this one seems to have the most potential.
4 You're Mine - This is one of the more vocally balanced tracks on the album, where Mariah does her whisper vocals and then also kicks in a little into powerhouse vocals. This was also released as a single but didn't even crack the top 50 of the hot 100.
5 Supernatural - This reminds me of many tracks from the last decade from Mariah. I wont give this track "gem" status because the baby sounds become too distracting as the song progresses.
6 Art of Letting Go - Another beautiful ballad that should not have been considered as a single but beautiful as an album closer.

The Tracks I can skip (which dont necessarily mean they are bad tracks but just not my cup of tea):
1 Make it Look Good - Not a terrible track but Im not a fan of that jazzy sound and she always seems to include one track that sounds like this on every album since Mimi.
2 Money - This sounds like a Mariah track from the last three albums and doesn't work for me especially because Fabulos' vocals are just too prominent. I don't mind a featured artist here and there but Mariah's vocals should always be front and center.

The Memoirs tracks:
1 Betcha Gon Know - One of my favorites tracks from her last album. It hasn't been changed at all in terms of beat or arrangement. This is the version which features R. Kelly on the second verse. This was released back when Memoirs came out by R Kelly as a male response to Mariah so not sure why it's here. This is a stunning track in general and I think should have always been a single on her last album so excited that it's getting an opportunity to be re-discovered.
2 It's a Wrap - This was one of the weak tracks for me on the last album and doesn't do a thing here either. I would have replaced one of these Memoirs tracks with her "target" bonus track, "America the Beautiful."

4.0 out of 5 stars Her best since The Emancipation 18 June 2014
By O. Malik - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
What can I say but how much I anticipated this release from the legendary Ms. Carey. It's been 5 years since her last album, and once again she proves why she is an unstoppable artist. Beginning with the vulnerable track "Cry.", the tone is already set, she means business. I smiled the entire way through listening to each and every word. I really believed the material on this album, compared to her last two. The soul is here, and I truly feel that she took her time for a reason.

Favorites:
Cry.
Dedicated
#Beautiful
Thirsty
Make it look good
You don't know what to do
Supernatural
Meteorite
Camouflage (underrated btw)
Money
Heavenly

The deluxe edition was kinda unnecessary to be honest. I feel like the first 14 tracks stand on their own as a body of work. The new version of "It's a wrap" is decent I guess. The only bonus track should have been "The art of letting go", but hey, more music from The Elusive Chanteuse. ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss out on Mariah's best record in years! 12 June 2014
By AndySP - Published on Amazon.com
Have always been a Mariah fan but trust me when I say that this truly is her best album in years! I've got all of her studio CDs from the first one on and I would honestly rank this one among the top 2 or 3 of her whole 24 year career. Don't know exactly why this record hasn't sold very well so far but to those who haven't bought it, I'm telling you you're missing out on an incredible album!

Her voice sounds amazing on this CD. She's belting notes I didn't know she could hit anymore. Her whistle notes are some of the highest ones I've ever heard her sing. Bottom line is the songs are great! Her voice sounds awesome! The vibe of the record is so cool! I can't stop listening to it. Some of my favorite Mariah songs of all time are on this new CD. My all time favorite of hers is, "We Belong Together", but some of these songs would definitely make my top 10 list of favorites of hers.

Mariah has outdone herself on this record and you really should download it and enjoy some great Mariah music!
