Statistics on the Haitian Population — On Tuesday, Jan. 12, a powerful earthquake struck Haiti, centered about 10 miles west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. The Census Bureau has numerous resources providing demographic and socioeconomic information not only on Haitians living in the United States but on Haiti itself. (Tentative scheduled for release Jan. 15 at <http://www.census.gov/newsroom/emergencies/>.)

2010 Census

First Enumeration in Alaska — Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves officially starts the 2010 Census by visiting a household in Noorvik, an Inupiat Eskimo village in western Alaska. The rest of the nation will receive census forms in the mail in mid-March. (Event scheduled for Jan. 25.)

American Community Survey

Race and Hispanic Origin of the Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2007 — This report from American Community Survey data describes the race and Hispanic-origin composition of the foreign-born population in 2007 and compares it with that of the total and native-born populations. It shows the foreign-born have a pattern of race and Hispanic-origin reporting that is markedly different from the native population. (Scheduled for release January 20.)

Economic Characteristics of Households in the United States: Third Quarter 2008 — Examines the roles of government-sponsored benefit programs and the labor market in helping people cope with the recession. Specifically, it presents data on average monthly income, participation in government-sponsored social welfare or insurance programs and labor force activity during the period. The data are from the 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation; they do not supersede the official income estimates released in September 2009. (Tentatively scheduled for release in January.)

Home-Based Workers in the United States: 1999-2005 — This set of tables describes the type of employment, occupations, earnings, work schedules and other characteristics of those who work at home and compares them with the overall workforce and those workers who do not work at home. The most recent data come from the 2005 Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in January.)

Finances of Selected State and Local Government Employee Retirement Systems: 3rd Quarter 2009 — This quarterly survey provides national summary data on the revenues, expenditures, and composition of assets of the 100 largest state and local government employee retirement systems in the United States. These 100 systems comprise 89.4 percent of financial activity among such entities. This survey provides the most current data about investment decisions by state and local government employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. These data tables are published four months after each calendar quarter and show national financial transactions and trends for the past five years. (Scheduled for release late January.)

Facts for Features

Super Bowl XLIV (Feb. 7) — An array of statistics from the Census Bureau's demographic subject areas relating to the 44th edition of our most celebrated sporting event. The game has evolved into the nation's most-watched television broadcast of the year and the day on which it occurs, Super Bowl Sunday, into a de facto national observance. Includes data for Miami, site of the big game, as well as cities represented by the two participating NFL teams. (Tentatively scheduled for release Jan. 25.)

Profile America and Al Día (Spanish) for January and February — Profile America segments include waves of grain in "Oatmeal" (Jan. 23) and forays in forecasting in "Weather Bureau" (Feb. 10).

The daily features are available at <http://www.census.gov/multimedia/www/radio/>. There the menu options allow selection for Profile America and Al Día, with download options for MP3 (including podcast subscription) and WAV files, or zip files for the entire month (MP3).

February's features will be uploaded late this month. February also brings a special Black History Month edition of Profile America, including such features as "Edward Brooke" (Feb. 5) and "Mae Jemison" (Feb. 13). 2010 Census

Advertising Launch — Jan. 14 — CBS broadcaster James Brown emceed the national unveiling of the 2010 Census advertising campaign -- featuring a peak at the Super Bowl TV ad -- from the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington. Call Center Opens — Jan. 13 — The Census Bureau opens a call center in Sandy, Utah, that will assist callers with information on completing their 2010 Census questionnaires. The center is one of 11 national facilities that will serve as an information resource/hotline for U.S. residents. National Partnerships — Jan. 11 — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce became the 150,000th partner for the 2010 Census, one of a long list of national, local and community-based organizations that are voluntarily promoting awareness of the 2010 Census and helping to spread the message that the census is easy, safe and important. Portrait of America Road Tour — Jan. 4 — The U.S. Census Bureau's national tour vehicle -- a 46-foot gooseneck trailer -- headed out from New York City's Times Square to begin the 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour, a cross-country interactive experience specifically designed to rally support and boost participation in the 2010 Census. The vehicle was featured on NBC's "Today." Also, 12 regional census vehicles began their travels from various famous landmarks across the nation. America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2009 — Jan. 15 — The latest portrait of the American family, these tables give us insights into recent trends in household and family composition and living arrangements. This news release examines the effect that unemployment is having on families. Other information to be found in the tables includes the number of children living with two parents, the number of children living with grandparents, median age at first marriage, the number of stay-at-home moms and the number of mixed-race couples. 2007 Economic Census: Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services Geographic Area Series — Jan. 15 — This is a series of national-, state-, county-, place-, and metro area-level data files on the professional, scientific, and technical services sector (NAICS 54). These include data for industries such as legal services, accounting and tax preparation services, engineering and architectural services, and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, revenue, payroll, number of employees, and other data items by industry. 2008 Service Annual Survey: Rental and Leasing Services (NAICS 53) — Jan. 7 — These tables provide revenue and expense data on a wide variety of rental and leasing services, including data on passenger car and truck rentals, consumer electronics and appliances rentals, formal wear rentals, video tape and disc rentals, machinery and equipment rentals and rentals of other consumer and commercial goods.
