History and Environmental Fair

Kansas Historical Society
This annual event aims to teach students grades four through six how Kansans have been "living green" for generations. Learn how nature and the environment have shaped our lives and how we, in turn, have impacted our environment. The fair features 30 hands-on activities and displays and a nature trail that can educate students in many aspects of environmental issues.
Admission is free. Event presented in cooperation with the Shawnee County Conservation District. Kansas Historical Society is located at 6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka.

Archaeology in the Classroom
July 23 - 27, Wednesday - Sunday
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Greenbush Resource Center, Eudora
Discover how Project Archaeology fosters an understanding of past and present cultures while it improves social studies, science, and literacy education. The national and Kansas-specific materials are appropriate for, but not limited to, grades three through eight. This course is designed for pre-service teachers, in-service educators, and archeologists who wish to teach Project Archaeology to students or facilitate teacher workshops.
Workshop will be held July 23 - 25. Optional actual field exercise is available July 26 - 27.
Program will be held at the Greenbush Resource Center, 1310 Winchester Road, Eudora. Enrollment limited to 25 people. Application deadline is July 1, 2014. For more information, contact Virginia Wulfkuhle at vwulfkuhle@kshs.org or 785-272-8681, ext. 266.

Theme Days at Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site
10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
April 17, 18, 23, 25, 28, or 29
Students can learn about life in 19th century Kansas with hands-on activities at this one day program. They can learn how pioneers prepared for the long journey west on the Oregon-California Trail by studying actual families who made the trip. Students can decide which supplies are needed for the journey then pack their covered wagons.
Students can bring a sack lunch and eat on the Civil War campground.
Fee is $4 per student. Reservations are required and space is limited. Call 913-262-0867. Shawnee Indian Mission is located at 3403 W. 53rd Street, Fairway.
