2014 Summer Workshop--Archaeology in the Classroom
The Cultural Resource Division of the Kansas Historical Society and the National Project Archaeology along with the Greenbush Southeast Kansas Education Service Center is offering a Project Archaeology workshop this summer at the Greenbush Resource Center, Eudora. Project Archaeology fosters an understanding of past and present cultures while it improves social studies, science, and literacy education. Topics covered include:
- Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter
- The Archaeology of Wichita Indian Shelter in Kansas
- The Archaeology of Early Agriculture in Kansas
- Migration of the Pueblo People to El Cuartelejo
An additional field exercise will be offered on Saturday and Sunday following the workshop. Facilitator training will be available for participants interested in teaching Project Archaeology materials to other instructors.
Members of the Greenbush School Improvement Services can attend the entire workshop at no charge. Participation fee for non-members is $50 which includes lunch and snacks. Two to three college credit hours are offered through Baker University. Tuition is $65 per hour. For those not taking the workshop for college credit, professional development points will be available. All participants will receive standards-based curriculum materials at no charge.
Workshop: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. July 23-25, 2014
Optional field exercise: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. July 26, and 8 a.m. - noon July 27.

2014-2015 Free Professional Development Opportunities for Your District
The new Kansas History, Government and Social Studies standards are closely connected to the Kansas College and Career Readiness ELA standards. Our educational staff can help your elementary and/or secondary teachers make the transition from the previous standards which emphasized memorization to today's standards that encourage students to not only read, write and speak but also make connections to today's world.
The free professional development sessions offered by our Museum and Education Division emphasize the connection of Social Studies and KCCRS. Participants will become familiar with effective instructional techniques and the use of primary sources and artifacts in their classrooms. We can also explain the new assessments and provide ideas of how to implement similar assessments in the classroom.
Our trained presenter has worked directly with the development of the new Kansas HGSS standards and is a certified KSDE trainer. The sessions are designed for K-12 social studies, gifted, reading, and Language Arts educators. Districts can choose the date, time, and place.
The sessions will include grade appropriate materials:
- Read Kansas! – a model for teaching history with primary sources, making students active participants in interpreting history.
- Kansas Memory – a digital archives of primary sources with special features especially for teachers' use in the classrooms (Hands-on sessions require access to a computer lab and internet.)
