2015 Oscar Predictions: Best Actress

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Indiewire will provide updates of our predictions for the 87th Academy Award nominations through January 2015, when the nominations are announced. Here's our very (and we mean very) early predictions for the best actress race, which after a year that saw four previous winners (and Amy Adams) compete for the prize could see a whole bunch of nominees that have come varying degrees of close, but never won (including Amy Adams). Adams, Berenice Bejo, Carey Mulligan, Michelle Williams, Jessica Chastain and Julianne Moore could all be in contention this year, as could a few woman who have never been nominated: Rosamund Pike, Emily Blunt, Emma Stone, Felicity Jones and Scarlett Johannson.  But they could all end up facing last year's winner Cate Blanchett, who once again could be in the running for her title role in Todd Haynes' "Carol." Check out predictions in other categories here. From Cannes To Oscar? »

Deakins To Film "Sicario" & "Caesar" Next?

11 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

One cinematographer who has built a fan base all his own over the years is Rodger Deakins. It's no surprise though considering Deakins has been responsible for the stunning visual looks of films like "Skyfall," "Prisoners," "The Assassination of Jesse James," "Jarhead," and much of the output of the Coen brothers.

He recently wrapped Angelina Jolie's WW2 tale "Unbroken," and many are now curious as to what he's doing next. Asked that very question by fans on his website's message boards, Deakins revealed his next two assignments.

The first is a re-teaming with "Prisoners" director Denis Villeneuve, the pair are prepping "Sicario" which deals with an Arizona cop (Emily Blunt) who travels across the border to Mexico with a pair of Delta Force rangers turned mercenaries to track down a drug lord. That film shoots later this summer.

The second? "I hope to be working with the Coen Brothers later in the year. »

Dp Roger Deakins Will Shoot Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Sicario’ & Hopefully The Coen Brothers’ ‘Hail Caesar’

24 May 2014 8:02 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

“Don’t be surprised when [Rodger Deakins] or [Nicolas Bolduc] pops up for one of these upcoming projects,” we wrote in April. Of course, we were talking about Denis Villeneuve and his two upcoming films, the crime film “Sicario” starring Emily Blunt and the sci-fi film “The Story Of Your Life” starring Amy Adams (the latter, a project Paramount bought the rights for recently at Cannes for a record $20 million). One of our writers had just spent time with Villeneuve and the “Prisoners” director said he wanted to work with both of his recent DPs again, Deakins who had lensed “Prisoners” and Bolduc who shot the more experimental “Enemy.” And looks like Villeneuve got his wish, as Roger Deakins will be the Dp on his coming crime film “Sicario.” What’s more Deakins might also work on the Coen Brothers’ next film “Hail Caesar” (he was supposed to work on “Inside Llewyn Davis,” but »

Emily Blunt finds her inner-action heroine in 'Edge of Tomorrow'

23 May 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Emily Blunt probably isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of action heroines. Which is understandable: In movies like The Devil Wears Prada, Looper, and Young Victoria, her characters have inflicted plenty of pain — just not with fists. (Remember when she gut-punched Anne Hathaway in Prada with one well-placed “Shan’t”?)

That’s about to change. In Edge of Tomorrow (out June 6), Blunt plays Rita Vrataski, a super-soldier who teaches Lt. Co. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) how to harness his time-looping ability in a war against aliens. It’s an intensely physical role that feels »

5 Reasons Why 'Edge of Tomorrow' Is the Event Movie to Beat This Summer

23 May 2014 | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

In a summer stuffed with event movies meant to dazzle with larger-than-life effects while extending already established franchises, Edge of Tomorrow slides in as one of the season’s wild cards – an explosive sci-fi action movie billed as “Groundhog Day inside an alien invasion,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in giant, weaponized suits. Will it get lost among its more buzzed-about reboots and sequels, or will Edge of Tomorrow quietly edge out its competition in terms of story, characters, action and general entertaining badassery? Oh, it’s most certainly the latter. Edge of Tomorrow leaps onto the summer-movie playing field with ferocious tenacity, expertly balancing large-scale action with humor, tension, courage and the kind of flawed heroes...

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Early Reviews – Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Movie is a Great Thrill Ride

22 May 2014 4:17 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Next month’s flashy sci-fi thriller, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise alongside Emily Blunt (Looper), and was directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). These names are certainly helping to sell the movie – in combination with the film’s sizable marketing push, which has drawn mostly positive and/or enthusiastic responses (as far as the geek crowd goes, anyway); yet, for the past few weeks, there have been multiple reports circulating, assuring that Cruise’s latest action vehicle is on track for a relatively soft opening at the box office.

Warner Bros. and the headliners for Edge of Tomorrow – estimated ...

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Review: This Is a Real Summer Blockbuster

22 May 2014 3:36 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Too many blockbusters mistake moroseness for seriousness, often forgetting the key ingredient for a great summer movie: actual fun. Until now, this summer has been no different with its self-serious tentpole releases. Fortunately, director Doug Liman hasn’t forgotten how to craft real escapist entertainment, despite his last popcorn film Jumper suggesting otherwise. His latest, Edge of Tomorrow, is maybe his most accomplished work to date, a massive blockbuster with scale, heart, plenty of humor, and no shortage of coolness. This, ladies and gentleman, is what we call a summer blockbuster. In the not too distant future, non-Earthlings invade Earth. After a series of devastating blows, new forms of weaponry like the mecha suits in the film are employed. The poster child for the war and the mecha suits is Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a great soldier whose earned the title “full metal bitch.” While she’s out there fighting the war in Europe, the »

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Review: Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt Do Time Travel Right

There is so much to like about Doug Liman‘s Edge of Tomorrow. An adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel All You Need Is Kill, the film takes sci-fi elements from The Matrix, Aliens, Starship Troopers, manga and more, and wraps them all up in a rewarding time travel conceit right out of Groundhog Day. Film Review: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’

22 May 2014 2:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Groundhog Day” and “Starship Troopers” make surprisingly compatible bedfellows in “Edge of Tomorrow,” a cleverly crafted and propulsively executed sci-fi thriller in which an untrained soldier must relive the same day over and over again — expiring violently each time — until he finds a way to defeat the alien marauders that have taken Earth hostage. That our ill-prepared hero is played by Tom Cruise lends a sly if perhaps unintended layer of subtext to this smarter-than-average star vehicle, insofar as the now 51-year-old actor seems to have embraced a similar trial-and-error career strategy: testing out one man-of-action persona after another in his ongoing (some would say undying) bid for bankability. Alas, B.O. success is likely to elude him this time out, as Warners’ June 6 release feels surprisingly low on buzz and audience awareness for an f/x-heavy picture with a $175 million pricetag. International returns will have to work extra-hard to make up the difference. »

The epic action of "Edge of Tomorrow" unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. Edge of Tomorrow Review

22 May 2014 1:00 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

When talented director Doug Liman presented the cult-favourite comedy Swingers back in 1996, few would have predicted that almost two decades down the line, he’d be at the helm of a science fiction blockbuster starring Tom Cruise. Liman must therefore be commended for his electric approach to filmmaking, yet while the more intimate, jocular moments serve Edge of Tomorrow well, ultimately, it’s the handling of the more grandiose, monumental themes which let this feature down.

Cruise plays Bill Cage, who finds himself unwittingly caught up in mankind’s cataclysmic war against an alien life form invading the planet. Though adamant he is not a soldier, and admits he’s afraid of the sight of blood – unfortunately for him, General Farrell (Bill Paxton) had different ideas, and sends the petrified soldier out into the heart of the battle. Cage sadly doesn’t last long – however when he is killed by the enemy, »

Batch of New Images Of Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton From Edge Of Tomorrow

Get a look at a bunch of new photos from Warner Bros. Pictures’ Edge Of Tomorrow. Opening domestically on June 6, the film will be distributed in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX.

In Edge Of Tomorrow, the world is at war with an indefatigable alien force no army, let alone individual, can conquer, and the greatest battle is still to come. Countless men and women will fight and all will be lost to these “Mimics,” unless the United Defense Force’s least likely recruit can succeed in employing a most implausible strategy: Live. Die. Repeat.

In the film, Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, a military PR man who’s never been to the front line but who, thanks to his ill-advised threat to a four-star general, ends up trapped in an alien-induced time loop, fighting for his life… and death.

Tom Cruise is way out of his depth in director Doug Liman’s sci-fi war actioner “Edge of Tomorrow.” How’s he gonna save the world when he’s kinda of a loser?
