'22 Jump Street' Schools 'Dragon' on Friday

6 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

22 Jump Street got off to a commanding lead in this weekend's battle of the sequels. How to Train Your Dragon 2 could make up ground throughout the weekend, though it will almost certainly fall short of $60 million.22 Jump Street opened to a massive $25 million on Friday. That's the second-biggest R-rated comedy debut ever behind The Hangover Part II ($31.6 million). It's also nearly double the first movie's $13.2 million start. The audience skewed younger (56 percent under 25), which suggests the movie will be very front-loaded this weekend. Still, it should wind up with at least $60 million. In second place, How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned an estimated $18.5 million on Friday. That's significantly higher than the first movie's $12.1 million start. Unfortunately, it's lower than Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted ($20.7 million), which was the last DreamWorks Animation sequel to open in June.It can be tough to predict how animated movies are going to play throughout the weekend, »

Jason Momoa will play Aquaman in 'Dawn Of Justice,' and we know how it will happen

16 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

So remember a few weeks ago when Jason Momoa made headlines because he said he was tired of being asked if he was going to play Aquaman in "Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice"? Well, he's totally playing Aquaman in "Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice." While Warner Bros. hasn't made that announcement officially yet, HitFix can confirm that he will be playing the part, and that Zack Snyder has already finalized his designs for the character so shooting can take place soon. One of the things that has driven me crazy since the release of "Man Of Steel" is when people say that the last act of the film is a problem since there's no consequences for Superman after all of the destruction that results from his battle with Zod. I felt like it was pretty clear walking out of the theater that the next film would have to be all about consequences. »

Chappelle Talks About Making Fun of Prince and Meeting Kanye for the First Time

7 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The Dave Chappelle hiatus is really over! In advance of his nine straight days of performances at Radio City Music Hall, Chappelle went on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Instead of asking him about why he left show business like Dave Letterman did, the ever genial Fallon kept it light, talking about Prince's album cover of "Breakfast Can Wait," which features Chappelle dressed up as Prince and serving pancakes. "That's a Prince judo move right there," said Chappelle. "You make fun of Prince in a sketch, and then he'll just use you in an album cover...What am I going to do? Sue him for using a picture of me dressed up as him? That's checkmate right there." He also recounted the first time he met celebrities like The Roots and, most notably, Kanye West, who knew that he was awesome way before anyone else did. "It was like »

See the Meta Instagram Ansel Elgort Took on a Plane

Augustus Waters Ansel Elgort Instagrammed a photo of a woman doing some light airplane reading (Us Weekly, natch) about none other than the manic pixie dreamboat himself. Elgort snapped the photo with the note, "Well this is awkward..." Aww, he is awkward in real life too! We hope that he went up behind her and tapped her shoulder, said "'Scuse me? What is your full name?" and proceeded to tell her something wildly inappropriate. After all, he should just give the people what they want. »

Best and Worst of '22 Jump Street'

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

One of the first conversations I had on Twitter after arriving home from London on Thursday evening was about whether or not "22 Jump Street" is a good comedy. I really enjoyed the movie, and I think it's got a lot going on just below the surface. It's like the world's most insane subversion of the "Beverly Hills Cop" model ever attempted, and it made me laugh like a maniac. It's clear, though, that some of us at HitFix laughed harder at the film than others, and that's fine. That's how comedies normally are. There are any number of comedies that I adore that people hate, and I would never try to argue the point with them. For me, laughter is an involuntary thing, and when I spend pretty much the entire running time of a film laughing, I'd call that a successful comedy. It was true of the first "21 Jump Street, »

Highlighted by a keynote address from Danny Glover, supporters of a sweetened incentive program for movies and TV shot in California attracted more than 500 attendees to an enthusiastic Saturday morning rally in San Francisco.

The two-hour event at the Fairmont Hotel was organized to demonstrate that Assembly Bill 1839 has strong backing outside the industry’s Hollywood core. Glover, who has a residence in San Francisco, said he had not worked in the San Francisco area since he shot a pilot based on Walter Mosely in 2003.

Paris– Brazilian musician-turned-director Ale Abreu’s “The Boy and the World” won the crystal award for best film and the audience nod at the 38th Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival which wrapped today.

The win of “The Boy and the World” (pictured above) underscores the building strength of Brazilian animation which delivered last year’s “Rio 2096,” winner of Annecy’s top prize.

Described by Variety‘s Dennis Harvey as a “simple, universal parable played out in boldly imaginative design terms,” Abreu’s dialogue-free film follows the journey of a young boy who leaves his village to search for his father across a big city where he discovers a world dominated by animal-machines.
