Children study in a child-friendly classroom, Xihe County, Gansu Province.

Every child has the right to develop and participate. Access to a quality education is vital for realization of each of these rights.

Children’s access to education has improved in China over the last thirty years.  Today, nearly all children attend primary school. UNICEF works with the Chinese government to make sure that these advances in basic education continue.

Our Education programme helps children across China, including those in remote rural areas and among ethnic minority groups. We also assist children make a quick return to schooling in the aftermath of emergencies.  We work on a wide range of projects, including:

  • creating Child Friendly Schools by making them safe, happy, inclusive and participatory,
  • supporting early childhood development through parenting education and outreach services,
  • improving access to quality pre-schools and kindergartens,
  • facilitating awareness raising among adolescents on issues of health, responsible social behavior and preparing for work,
  • promoting safety education and disaster preparedness in schools and quick responses in times of emergencies.

You can help improve children’s access to quality education in China. Take action by learning how parents play a crucial role in early childhood development. Or find out how you can support UNICEF today.
