I don't care who's winning the console war - Microsoft's Xbox One is awesome
Sorry, fanboys, you just don't get it.
At Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference this week, CEO Tim Cook bashed Android for its fragmentation by showing a slide with Android’s latest version, KitKat, on only 9% of all Android phones. While it’s true that KitKat’s market share is still very low throughout the entire world, analytics firm Chitika released new Android numbers on Friday that show KitKat has jumped to 37% in North America. Chitika attributes this increase mostly to the three most recent Samsung Galaxy S phones being updated to KitKat, which obviously makes sense since Samsung is the most popular Android smartphone maker. Verizon and AT&T probably aren’t fans of Sprint’s plan to buy T-Mobile and now they have yet another reason to hate it: Apparently it will make T-Mobile CEO John Legere more powerful. Bloomberg’s sources say that Legere, the notoriously foul-mouthed CEO with a reputation for shameless publicity stunts, will stay on as CEO of a newly merged Sprint and T-Mobile if the two companies’ reported $32 billion merger proposal passes regulatory inspection. Jonathan Chaplin, an analyst at New Street Research, tells Bloomberg that giving Legere this additional power will make him “twice as crazy” because he’ll have “double the asset base to work with.” More →
Electronic Arts will unveil more details about Battlefield Hardline at E3 next week, but a short official launch trailer for the game has already leaked, MP1ST reported. Aside from gameplay scenes, the short 44-second video reveals the game will hit stores on October 21. Surprisingly, after having been leaked, the same video was also uploaded on EA’s official YouTube channel. Thus, the company further confirmed the game’s release date ahead of next week’s announcement. More →
Netflix rocked the television industry when it announced its $100 million deal for House Of Cards. The star-studded series showed the world that Netflix meant business. It wanted to be the HBO of the Internet. As for delivering on that promise, House Of Cards was… good. The production quality was most certainly impressive and the acting was solid, for the most part, but the writing was a bit lacking and the storyline was painfully predictable.
The real jewel in Netflix’s original programming crown, it turns out, is Orange Is the New Black. More →
At Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference this week, Apple overwhelmed developers with over 4,000 new APIs, a new programming lanuguage, and updated versions of OS X and iOS to play with. But it also showed a new commitement to cloud services, an area Apple has traditionally lagged in. According to analyst Benedict Evans, this shift helps reveal the true character of Apple and how it differs from Google. More →
Apple’s stock will plummet to below $100 per share on Monday… but it’s nothing to worry about. Apple’s shares, which closed Friday’s trading at $645.57, will begin trading on Monday somewhere south of $100 for the first time in more than seven years, and it won’t be because the company has missed Trip Chowdry’s deadline for releasing an iWatch. Instead, the lower price will reflect Apple’s wild 7-for-1 stock split taking effect after all current shareholders receive six additional shares of Apple stock for every share they now own. StreetInsider points out that while the split officially took place on June 2nd earlier this week, the share price won’t reflect this change until trading starts on Monday.
Other than possibly finding the Loch Ness monster, there aren’t many good reasons to use Apple Maps instead of Google Maps. However, a recent acquisition reported by TechCrunch might actually change that. According to TechCrunch’s sources, Apple has purchased Spotsetter, a social search application that could help Apple add some interesting new features to its oft-ridiculed Maps application on the iPhone. The Earth is a pretty beautiful place when you get right down to it and one of the underrated aspects of Google Maps is that it gives us a bird’s-eye view of the planet’s most lovely features. A Tumblr called Earth Patterns has been keeping a collection of the most beautiful and intriguing pictures that it’s found on Google Maps, with a particular emphasis on pictures that show patterns that you’d expect to see in an M.C. Escher drawing. The patterns shown in the pictures are either natural, such as the shores of Lake Acraman in southern Australia, or manmade, such as a gold course in Portugal. We’ve included a couple of the pictures below but you really should head over to Earth Patterns to check out the full collection for yourself. More →
In addition to the new Intel Core M processor that’s supposed to help laptop makers create even thinner laptops and convertible tablets, another interesting notebook component was unveiled this week at Computex 2014, CNET reports: the Maglev Keyboard from Darfon. One of the great things about Reddit is that it gives us a convenient one-stop location where we can check in on all different kinds of fan communities to get a sense of what they like and don’t like about their favorite products. Google may be on the prowl for a new music streaming service of its own, The New York Post has learned, as – just like Apple – the company is not particularly happy with its home-grown solutions. More →
Samsung is apparently already working on Android tablets with 4K resolution, TechRadar reveals, after having seen one such prototype in France during an LTE broadcast demonstration at the French Open at Roland Garros. The device used is apparently a “reference device for operators to perform tests with,” although the tablet came with clear Samsung branding and design, including Samsung’s “physical home key below the 12-inch UltraHD display.” From the looks of it, the tablet seems similar to Samsung’s current 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and Tab Pro 12.2 models.
