OHV riding in Minnesota

• Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-highway motorcycles (OHMs) and off-road vehicles (ORVs), such as 4x4s.

• Safety training is recommended for everyone that operates an OHV. It is required for ATV riders born after July 1, 1987 and OHM riders under the age of 16.

• All non-residents must purchase a non-resident ATV pass or non-resident ORV pass to ride on state or grant-in-aid trails.

• OHVs are generally permitted on state forest roads and trails in accordance with state forest motor vehicle use classifications and regulations.

Visitor Alert:

  • State Forest visitors: Use CAUTION when traveling. Heavy rains have caused flooding and washouts in some areas on local and state forest roads. Road conditions can change rapidly due to flash flooding. The website will be updated and roads and trails signed as soon as information becomes available.
  • Spring temporarily trail and road closers are now in affect due to wet conditions in state forest, parks, recreation area and wildlife management areas.
  • Road and trail users should pay particular attention to state forest closures. A closed forest means that all roads and trails are closed. Signs will be posted at entry points and parking lots. The closures include all unmarked roads and trails, unless specifically listed.
